Acne?

I think there is minor (?) surgery now to fill in the scars left with slivers of your own skin from elsewhere.

I seem to remember seeing it done on 'Embarrassing Bodies'.

Annodomini one of my sisters in law had some sort of ray therapy as a teenager for severe acne. Ultra-violet, maybe?

It's great to hear that young people won't be landed with lifetime scarring any more.
Yikes annodomini! Xray treatment for acne. Scary thought.

When I had acne in my teens, (60 years ago) the dermatologists tried everything; then they decided on a new remedy - deep x-ray treatment. It worked, but I have never heard of it since and presume it was considered too risky. When I told my GP about it many years later, she was horrified because she thought there must have been a significant risk of cancer. The scars are still there, but have been subsumed into my wrinkles.

Yes, long-term antibiotic treatment and roaccutane have changed the game dramatically for acne-sufferers. They can have some unpleasant side effects but if you can tolerate them, they're very effective.

A friend recently had a Whitlow - you don't hear of them nowadays, either!

One of my GSs had severe acne which was painful and embarrassing. The treatment was not pleasant and he had to miss some school work due to the side effect of extreme tiredness. However, it was all worth it as he now has a lovely clear skin with hardly any scarring.

Roaccutane!

It's not the most pleasant treatment, but it does prevent that terrible scarring that was common with severe acne.

That would explain it! A great step forward that's just taken for granted. Ah well.

There’s really successful treatment available now and doctors are much more likely to refer people to a dermatologist who can prescribe and monitor the treatment. There is a well established treatment path and luckily it works for most. Life Changing!

We were just talking about someone we used to know. He was a nice looking young man but badly scarred by acne. So many people used to be. It struck me that we very rarely see it any more. Is this a quiet medical revolution that's removed this blight?
I know adolescents can go through spotty phases but serious acne was so much worse than that.
