mine have! some people have lovely feet, mine wern't too bad, but this last 3/4 years they are not good, corns (after wearing some Clarks £68 shoes) confused

Nails not very nice, dry skin, at the mo I am soaking them in salt water, I also have some of those bootie sock things that moisturise them, so I will be doing that afterwards.

As its coming summer (well eventually) would love to get them in tip top condition. (Can't afford a chiropodist) so its d.i.y I'm afraid.

Any hints and tips most welcome.

Like Monica and FlexibleFriend my feet haven’t changed at all I still have quite a good shape and the skin is nice it must be genetics because apart from a daily shower I do absolutely nothing for my feet except cut my nails when needed

I usually have a bath at the weekend with oil and epsom salts in. Not too hot though, as it dries your skin out. I also take fish oils, to try and help with skin problems such as eczema. My job involves standing for 8 hours every day, so I wear Fit Flops or Hotter boots.

I've had a good laugh reading these horror tales. I broke one of my big toes and the nail has never grown properly since. My son said it looks a parrots beak! The other has come out in sympathy. Hence I cannot wear sandals in summer.

I’m the same BlueBelle.

As a teenager I worked with an older lady (she must have been in her 60s and I thought her ancient !) and she told me to always look after my feet as the would be carrying me through my life.

Don’t think my feet are lovely but they’re presentable as I’ve always given myself a pedicure once a month in winter and once a fortnight in summer as I love wearing sandals or even barefoot around the house. Treated myself to a proper pedicure once on holiday and couldn’t stand someone touching my feet.....so I’ll have to carry on with the diy!

My feet are in good nick, thank goodness. Daily wash, quick rub with pumice stone and moisturise, plus a pedicure every couple of months.

My sons are under strict instructions to ensure my feet stay nice should I become incapacitated!

I've not got corns or bunions but I do have very dry skin which turns hard very quickly and is extremely unsightly when wearing sandals or flip flops.

Some time ago I discovered a hemp foot cream. Now, I know we shouldn't advertise on here but it came from that particular "Shop" that sells stuff for "Bodies" ?. They're not too on the high street now but do sell online and at some big "Outlets".

I use it generously at night and wear an old pair of socks in bed. But I guess any sort of other intense moisturiser would work the same, just have to be very careful when getting into the bath or shower the following morning!

I too hate my feet and wear closed in shoes in the summer although i would love to wear sandals or flipflops.Didn't realise when i was younger that beautiful feet disappear as you age!!!!

I'm always injuring my feet. Currently been out of action for a week because I walked into a heater in the dark and badly bruised two toes resulting in a lot of pain and a black foot up to my ankle bone. Previously I broke two toes on the same foot kicking off from the sides of a swimming pool. Have you ever opened the fridge door and scraped all the tops of your toes? I have.

I said to my DD I think sometimes I forget just how big my feet are - size 40. She replied, Mum, you've had them for ages and you should know how long they are by now.

I think I need slippers with steel toe-caps.

Grammaretto Sun 24-Mar-19 09:25:59

I know feet are inherited. My feet are identical to my DM's and she blamed her dad!
At yoga each week when we bare our feet I look enviously at the lovely straight toes around the room.
I saw a podiatrist recently who said I can't blame I'll fitting shoes or high heels for my pointed feet after all I haven't worn them for 50 years.
She advised against an operation to straighten the big toes as she sees the ones which went wrong but made me special insoles which I'm supposed to wear inside my very sensible shoes with proper support. I buy them from Hotter.

My mother too made me wear sensible shoes until about 15. My feet have generally been ok but sometime ago I got a hard callous on the side of one of my smaller toes. Referred by my docs to a chiropodist. She told me it was my shoes but I wasn’t convinced as this hadn’t happened before and I rarely wore anything but flat, comfy shoes. I discovered by chance that it was the seam of my socks causing the problem so changed them for seamless and it’s now fine.
When living and working in Turkey and continually wearing sandals my feet started to get very dry and splitting my skin. One of my colleagues said to buy zinc cream so I bought baby cream with zinc and still keep zinc and castor oil to this day. In the summer it really helps my feet when they are dry. Just use overnight covered with cotton socks to prevent staining.
Having said all that, I’m fortunate to have no bunions and no real problems. As others have said, genetics do play a part in foot health.

harrigran Sun 24-Mar-19 09:30:22

I didn't realise how ugly mine are until I photographed my right foot after dropping the dumbell on it. All the toes are a funny shape after previously breaking them. The skin is so thin and with broken veins the feet are more purple than pink.
I love my sandals so will be putting varnish on the toenails and braving it.

bikergran Sun 24-Mar-19 09:33:36

I sounds like it may yet again be an age thing, I struggle with (sounds gross) but my nails are getting thicker and thicker and if you have a fungal nail infection it is I believe awful to get rid of.
So I am going to pamper my feet from now on and see if it makes any different.

Those little bootie things are only 89p in Home Bargain (dont think im advertising just letting people know) they come in all types. Mint and Cool water/honey and almond/charcoal/tea tree so I am going to stock up on them. Look out feet here I come smile

henetha Sun 24-Mar-19 09:34:26

I've got the worst feet in the world and nobody, absolutely nobody, is allowed to see them, ever!

Fennel Sun 24-Mar-19 09:39:44

As others have said some foot problems are genetic.I have a bunion below my right big toe, and so has my sister. Hers is worse than mine, the big toe crosses the next one.
Since stopping wearing hard shoes and changing to Skechers my feet are better , especially less corns.
I go to a podiatrist regularly now.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Sun 24-Mar-19 09:41:22

I think that my feet have got further away or is it just more difficult to reach them?
The skin on my heels is much drier and I find cutting my toenails more tricky.

I have a Scholl Pedi, £20 from b and m, works wonders for the hard skin, plus l'occitane foot cream. Has improved the look of my heels no end.

knspol Sun 24-Mar-19 10:40:01

Bunions on both feet that show through my shoes, arthritis in 1 foot, toenails getting discoloured and thickening a real pleasure to behold! Whole family has/had bunions so probably genetic rather than shoes worn in the past.

MadGrandma Sun 24-Mar-19 10:43:51

I have had a bunion for years - even underwent surgery on it once but it's back and worse than ever. As a result I have hammer toes, and really thick nails which - as my toes are curling under - can make walking very painful sometimes. Last year I treated myself to a chiropodist appointment and have been going every 8 weeks ever since as my feet feel wonderful for about the first 3 weeks, then it gradually starts to hurt again.
I always wore "sensible" shoes - have not worn high heels in many years, and now mainly spend my life in either open sandals with velcro straps in the summer or trainers in the winter! Of course the chemo I've been having hasn't helped and now all my nails are hard, lumpy or beginning to drop off, so NOT a pleasant sight!

kwest Sun 24-Mar-19 10:44:40

I pay £11.00 every four or five weeks at a beauty and hair salon in the village and have my toenails cut and filed and then have nail polish applied ( red because my husband likes it). The polish lasts really well and the lady at the salon seems to put a clear layer of something on them followed by two coats of nail polish and then finished with something that makes them dry quickly but she always tells me to give them 3 or 4 hours or longer if possible for them to harden properly. Which is why there is the odd vision of me walking home in my old Scholls sandals with no socks or tights even in the middle of winter. Fortunately it is less than five minutes walk from home. Much to the derision of my children I wore Scholl's sandals for about 50 years whenever possible or boots. New shoes always give me blisters. Thankfully my feet look fairly reasonable for my age , despite a flare up of plantar fasciitis under my right heel which is painful but not obvious.

FlexibleFriend Sun 24-Mar-19 10:51:52

Not only do I have good feet I also have toenails that are no thicker than fingernails, they are more tricky to cut as my arms are just too short and my knees can't bend so my son takes care of them for me, which he'd probably refuse to do if my feet were manky. No idea if it's genetic but my mum had awful feet and I can't remember my dad's. I said I've never worn over tight shoes or shoes that pinch but I've also never worn sensible shoes, just shoes that fitted well and were comfortable as they were soft.`

Craftycat Sun 24-Mar-19 10:53:53

Having worn high heels & all sorts of weird shoes over the years ( I love shoes!!) I deserve bad feet but they are very good apart from a verruca courtesy of my DGS
I wonder if it is doing yoga most of my adult life? It gives the feet a good workout. I do always use a sort of foot emery board on them once a week in the bath.
I think it is just the luck of the draw.

inishowen Sun 24-Mar-19 10:59:36

My toe nails have become so tough I can't cut them easily. Sometimes I soak them in a bowl for ages but they're not much better. I'm always buying new scissors trying to find good ones. In the summer I use dark nail polish. It hides a multitude of sins.

pce612 Sun 24-Mar-19 11:20:01

MicroPedi Pro rechargeable (eBay) for removing hard skin - brilliant, much better than the battery version; Margaret Dabbs foot hygiene cream (seems pricey but lasts forever so really good value, you only need a tiny blob) to soften skin (from QVC or Ideal World, can't remember which or Google search). Or try solid coconut oil, a tiny blob will go a long way.
Not sure about soaking feet in salt water, I use a moisturising bath soak and scrub with a scotchbrite - excellent exfoliator.
If you suffer from sweaty feet, a 48 hour deodorant stick or spray works wonders.
