Coming off antibiotics after several months - easy peasy?

Have been taking two antibiotics for 6 months following surgery for infection in lining of knee. Due to end mid April (yippee). Have been told to stop taking them cold turkey, not phase them out. A bit concerned about the possibility of 'gut reactions' after so long. Consultant at hosp says not. Have no reason to disbelieve him but thought he was a touch dismissive. Anyone else gone through this. Is it really easy peasy?

I haven't been through this but having had lots of antib's over a short time through constant breast infections ( had all milk ducts removed which solved the problem) I was advised to have Actimel every morning by the nurse at my surgery and also took tablets daily to resupply my gut and embarrassingly I cant remember what they were, when I do I will post again, I mean a type of probiotic.
It certainly helped me as I had a lot of really painful gut problems.

I was prescribed 6 months of antibiotics some years ago to deal with a recalcitrant kidney infection. They were simply stopped at the end of the course, no tailing off, I can’t recall any unpleasant side effects from stopping. I also took a probiotic for some. months afterwards.

Had to have antibiotics virtually non stop for years.....when I was finally able to stop it was bliss! I worked hard to help my body to re-establish a better gut flora - a live yoghurt at least once daily, as wide a range of fruit and veg as possible and plenty of them.

I slept better within a day or so and toilet habits (!) improved commensurately. It really doesn’t take more than a few days for the effects of antibiotics to wear off as they have a short half life.

Go well! ?

Listen to the ladies above - you have to help the gut return to normal. I had problems caused by huge doses of antibiotics after a serious post-hysterectomy infection and ended up with candida throughout the digestive system. I too say take some good quality probiotics as candida is unpleasant. Good luck!

Buy yourself some BioKult from Boots. That’ll sort your gut out.

I was on a daily antibiotic for over a year due to hair loss (frontal fibrosing alopecia). It didn't work. Nor did any other medication or treatment. I never picked up any infections either though and was worried that I might when I came off them. No ... nothing happened. There was no difference and no side effects.

I had to take three strong antibiotic every day for 18 months due to a non contagious type of TB. The side effects were horrendous and I was surprised to be told to just stop rather than reduce gradually. That was six weeks ago and it is wonderful to not have to take them. Some of the side effects, such as dreadful itching, stopped straight away. Others are still bothering me.

DD was on high doses of antibiotics for a month following and accident. The problem wasn't withdrawal symptoms as much as the antibiotics completely messed with her internal biome, killing off internal bacteria needed for a healthy gut.

She ended upwith food intolerances and all the problems of a disturbed digestion system. After a year if taking prebiotics and the probiotics available from places like Holland and Barrett and similar without effect, she spoke to her local pharmacist who recommended a product called Symprove, which I think is now available on prescription, but wasn't then. It was expensive and a three month course but it worked wonders and she is now back to normal.

Many thanks to all. Some good ideas here that I hadn't heard of., esp live yogurt and stepping up fruit and veg intake. Have been taking a probiotic all along, thinking of reducing the dosage when stopped the antibiotics but will now carry on for a month.

On the subject of probiotics, I think that there needs to be a gap of several hours after taking an antibiotic or the probiotic will interfere the treatment.
