More gas/bloating as we get older?

This is a question my OH suggested I asked Gransnetters. He feels he suffers more from gas/wind and bloating than he did when younger (now 69). I haven't noticed it in myself, except when I eat something like French onion soup.

Have any of you noticed being more "windy" as you age?

I was told not to eat potatoes or bread ( I do have the occasional slice of sour dough bread.)

At 60 nothing yet but i have noticed that people in their late 70's and beyond have "walking farts" they get up and there she blows!
Many of them seem to be unaware that they do it.

I have been looking out for an April Fool thread. Could this be it or is there one I haven't seen yet? grin

Definitely very windy here. My concern is that I can't always control it. The first time it happened I had bent down to pick a pen up during a meeting, more mortifying as there were 2 new male members of staff with us. Since then it's got worse and some days I can orchestrate every step I take. I definitely know any dried fruit is a problem. It can be very embarrassing as I have no sense of when they will pop out.

My old grandma used to say ‘wherever you be, let your wind blow free’. She had no pride!!

I left the bathroom this morning apologising to my husband that it seemed every wind instrument in an orchestra had wanted to make itself heard ?

Nope. Have noticed it's totally diet related for me.

Assuming you are in the UK is he doing his bowel screening.....

Oh some of this has made me laugh out loud! I have had trouble with wind all my life as I have been an IBS sufferer since I was 13. It's no joke when you have to hold on to it and can be embarrassing - I live alone so I'm fine in my own space but if I have to share a room with anyone I'm always anxious! I don't think mine has got any worse with age, it's probably better as I have eventually worked out what makes it worse. Gluten free definitely helps - to the gransnetter who asked M&S seeded loaf is the best I've found. Thanks for the laughs, it's brightened up my morning!

What form does BioKult come in, Anja?

I know I should probably try some of those 'gut friendly' drinks, but they all seem to be milky/yoghurt-y, and such things make me heave.

(Something gin-and-tonic flavoured would be nice...)

Definitely! I can fart for Scotland...do I care? No! just blame it on the dog...you can do anything you like if you live alone.

I worked in a hospital for 28 years and read in a medical journal that the average person farts 14 times a day (no mention of age). The rest of t he article was abut a man who farted 14 times an hour and had difficulty keeping a job.

Lol, I sometimes think that threads on here are just a wind up - sorry no pun intended. I'm sure the O P isn't though so no offence.

Lol at Harrigran.

I thought what the heck is a Fartectomy so googled. Lol, I don't think I read what it really is but it was an eye opener - or perhaps I should keep them shut! Urban dictionary came up shock

IBS can occur at any age. I was diagnosed four years ago along with acid reflux.
Probiotics (good live ones) Prebiotics to help feed the healthy bacteria, home made kefir and yogurt all help but having just finished a course if antibiotics for a chest infection I now have to work at building up my gut bacteria all over again!

I went to GP a few weeks ago as I had terrible gas for a week or so. Given blood test was anaemic sent to hospital for gastroscopy I had an Ulcer plus a polyp.

David1968 Mon 01-Apr-19 11:06:27

No, actually I'd say that I'm less "windy" now! And I eat more fibre than I ever did. Perhaps that's the answer:I know people say that fibre causes wind (all the jokes about beans) but I've found that a high fibre diet has actually reduced the issue, for me.

Witzend Mon 01-Apr-19 09:27:54

Definitely, though I think I've developed some degree of gluten intolerance. If I cut it out for a few days I do notice a difference.
I find rice noodles good, but the gluten free bread I've tried is pretty awful, not too awful taste wise but it falls apart so easily.
If anyone knows of a good brand, I'd be grateful! Though maybe just keeping right off bread would be good - I could do with losing a few pounds.... or rather quite a few - as long as they came off in the right places.

There was 'Le Petomane' the famous French music hall entertainer too.

EllanVannin Mon 01-Apr-19 09:11:02

JackyB, I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. My mum was the only one in the family who suffered with digestive problems because she couldn't/didn't pass wind " naturally ".

Have you heard of " Mr Methane ?" He made a living from his wind. It all started when he went to yoga classes with his sister and whatever move/position the class was taught, he'd erupt ! His sister then suggested he go into " entertainment " which he did and after eating a plateful of beans, he appeared on shows.
When he appeared on a show in Australia my friend and I were in stitches as he performed to " The Blue Danube ".

JackyB Mon 01-Apr-19 08:25:33

Both DH and I have terrible trouble. I have been cursed with it all my life and I'm glad he has it now because it means I don't have to suppress my wind. ("Better out than in"!) I haven't actually broached the subject but we ought to try leaving various food types out of our diet to see if it is an intolerance to something. In the meantime we continue to trumpet to each other like courting elephants.

If I could have one wish, it would be that I never had to worry about it again, it bothers me so when I'm in company.

Jane10 Mon 01-Apr-19 07:34:24

Terry Wogan always used to say that 'It's not the trapped wind you have to worry about its the ones that get away!'

NfkDumpling Mon 01-Apr-19 06:58:46

I did hear somewhere - it may have been Woman's Hour - that old people do fart more, but those farts don't smell!

BradfordLass72 Mon 01-Apr-19 06:51:14

Our digestive processes certainly need help as we get older, whether we suffer from gas or not.
The internal bacteria needs renewing and boosting to prevent numerous intestinal and bowel-related ills.
Especially if we've taken anti-biotics or any of the many medications which kill the good bacteria in our gut.

I take acidophilus bifidus capsules or Digestive Enzymes and if all else fails, which it rarely does, Activated Charcoal - which is also recommended if you have 'runny tummy'.

Never a bubble, burp or balloon from me.

Speaking while eating.

EllanVannin Sun 31-Mar-19 20:44:37

It has more to do with swallowing air.
