More gas/bloating as we get older?

This is a question my OH suggested I asked Gransnetters. He feels he suffers more from gas/wind and bloating than he did when younger (now 69). I haven't noticed it in myself, except when I eat something like French onion soup.

Have any of you noticed being more "windy" as you age?

that old people do fart more, but those farts don't smell!
Nfk; Being mindful of the fact that there may still be some ladies watching this thread: wink an old Merchant Navy friend, being fairly forthright, used to describe "toffy-nosed" ladies as having "odourless excreta" i.e. didn't stink, or words to that effect. grin

And Queen Elizabeth the 1st has a good story too.

Edward de Vere, one of her courtiers farted in her presence and was so embarrassed that he left the court for several years.

Eventually however, he returned and, paying court to his Queen bowed low (this time without the noisy consequences).

'Ah, De Vere' she said, 'how nice to see you back again. We have quite forgot the fart.'

I'm sure most people will know this one: Queen Victoria riding in an open landau accompanied by an eastern potentate - suddenly the horse farts loudly, and the queen, rather flustered and embarrassed says "Oh, I'm so sorry your majesty" to which he replied, "Please don't worry, your majesty, I thought it was the horse".

Try the News and Politics threads. A lot of gas and hot air over there although I doubt they have any solutions. hmmgrin

Thanks for brightening my day. I'm creased up with laughing at some of these posts!

Always! Better out than in. Although not so much next to very windy bloke on tube other day. Very smelly!

You may be able to find some helpful ideas in this clip (fast forward to 3 min 8 secs, I've forgotten how to link to a certain point in a clip.)

Talking of "Old Farts", my DH farted long and loud the other day and said "now I know why old men are called Old Farts" grin

I remember as a child, my Granny (God rest her soul) farted in the garden and ran down the (long) garden to try and disguise the fact. The result was hilarious as it sounded like she was jet propelled down the whole length of the garden! At the end even she was laughing.

Makes you wonder! Maybe it's in the genes grin

When I was on Metformin for my Diabetes I was really glad I lived on my own, cat didn't seem to mindgrin.

I no longer take Metformin, problem solved, antibiotics give me acid refluxconfused

DM had a "wind" problem, she rarely eats bread or potatoes now & I think this has solved her troubles

Grannyguitar Mon 01-Apr-19 19:45:46

Charcoal tablets do help. I can go to parties again now!

Tillybelle Mon 01-Apr-19 18:36:58

No, but due to painkillers I get constipation so take senna. Talking about this to a friend she said her DM was the same and her DF used to ask after a trip to the loo, "Mission Accomplished or Mission Impossible?"

Grandmama Mon 01-Apr-19 18:24:18

I once read that a tight waistband can cause wind - are his trousers a bit tight round his waist?

Nandalot Mon 01-Apr-19 16:56:07

My DH has been suffering with the same problem recently. Today he said that he had felt much better over the last few days and said that he realised he had not eaten any bread. He is now going to cut down on bread and see what happens. Poor bread maker will fell unloved.

I suffer terribly from flatulence and belching.
It’s almost every single day now and it’s getting me down.
Of course, it’s worse after eating foods such as broccoli and cabbage etc, but I love my veggies and don’t want to give them up. I don’t suffer from indigestion, but I have been diagnosed with diverticulosis.
I should have had a colonoscopy, but couldn’t face the horrible procedure. There is no pain, so I’m just putting up with all the above symptoms.

If giving up vegetables, what sort of multi vitamin should I take.
Any recommendations?

LizH13 - you made me laugh until I cried! I was diagnosed with IBS twenty years ago and it is the bane of my existence. I bend over, wind is expelled, laugh and same thing happens. It is very embarrassing for me as, usually, I am so polite. I’ve a feeling that my anxiety causes IBS flare ups!

Perhaps feminist Ashleigh Ingle (the Seriously..... thread) could harness some of you, train you up, and set you to take the fight to us loud farting passive-aggressive males, using our wind power to assert our dominance.

Farmor15 Mon 01-Apr-19 15:56:44

Caro57 - we're in Ireland but have the Bowelscreen programme here, which he did.

Shysal - I posted first on 30th March, so not an April Fool thread - you'll have to keep looking!

It is an amusing topic for some people, but judging by some posts, it's a problem for others. I don't think my OF* has too much of a problem as I'm not aware of it. It was just that he was aware of being "windier" than he used to be.

Since he'd asked me to post, I read out some of the replies yesterday when a friend was visiting and we had a good laugh at the funny ones. Others have made useful suggestions - thanks, I'm passing them on to him.

*OF=Old Fart - maybe could be added to list of Acromyns/Abbreviations! That wasn't my idea, but the friend's. (OH didn't object).

Excellent scheme Barmeyoldbat!

Maybe we could harness some off the power from our wind for the National Grid.

I have a large tablespoonful of sauerkraut with my lunch every day, think this is good for my gut health. x

Hilmix Mon 01-Apr-19 14:06:56

?????

Ellie Anne Mon 01-Apr-19 14:06:04

Yes I’ve noticed that and it’s very embarrassing.

grandtanteJE65 Mon 01-Apr-19 13:26:27

Yes, I pass wind more often now than I did, say, 20 years ago.

I boil onions for ten minutes before frying them, and eat yogurt for breakfast which I find makes the problem less troublesome.

And I am healthy, so I think an increase of flatulence is part of the aging process for some people. Both my mother and maternal grandmother dealt with it by omitting certain foodstuffs from their diet as they aged.

Esspee Mon 01-Apr-19 13:20:54

nanasam thank you for that! I laughed out loud at your contribution. grin
