Stroke risk for Vegans

Well this is the latest find: Vegans and strict vegetarians like myself run a higher risk of emorragic stroke possibly due to very low cholesterol and lack of B12! So if you thought you were doing good by getting your cholesterol really low, you were wrong! confused

I read this too yesterday, i'm not a big meat eater, but even my Dr said i should eat more meat even though i have to have blood taken if i get too much iron in my blood,

jenpax Fri 06-Sept-19 10:25:12

Oh no! Vegetarian for 33 years and very low cholesterol!! Have also been switching to plant mills and yogurts??‍♀️ Still don't plan to go back to a carnivorous diet ?

BlueSky Fri 06-Sept-19 10:45:56

Jenpax I know I was trying to become vegan but after this better staying just vegetarian and ditch all those plant sterol tablets I started to take!

I think it's not just vegetarians and vegans but also meat eaters on a very low fat diet. They drum into us that we must lower our cholesterol but they don't tell us that too low has its risks too.

Proteins are vital to the diet. Nothing better for you than home-made chicken soup.

As a vegan for 27 years makes me feel better that I keep my cholesterol up by consuming too many crisps and Oreo’s!!!

Charleygirl5 Sun 08-Sept-19 12:45:29

Here was stupid me thinking that vegetarians and vegans eat healthier diets than myself? I think I will continue to eat what I fancy- a lot of fish, and take my chances.

pinkquartz Sun 08-Sept-19 12:58:55

I was veggie for most of thirty years and during that time I spent 3 years vegan. Never again!
I got weaker and weaker.
There is no B12 in a proper vegan diet. I did this a long time ago there were none of the manufactured foods around and that is another issue.
I never ate fake cheese or anything like that. I was mostly beans and lentils and tofu.........never again.

I stopped being vegetarian when I started seeing a nutritionist who urged me to eat meat. She said I needed the protein and amino acids building blocks only found in meat.
it took a long while for me to eat meat again.
Now I eat it somedays. Mostly chicken or fish.
I only eat meat from a local farm or organic so I am not getting all the toxins in battery reared meat.

I also know people who were veggie from birth because of their parents who now eat some meat.......they feel much better for it and will remain occasional meat eaters.

I only know two vegans. Both have sky high cholesterol and have to take medication.

Xrgran Sun 08-Sept-19 14:25:12

Ridiculous comments!

From a slim healthy 58 year old vegan who can’t help it if other people feel bad about eating animals.

My SIL eats meat and has had to start B12 infusions!

KatyK Sun 08-Sept-19 14:48:33

My DH eats meat and also had to have B12 injections. Personally I am sick of all the scaremongering.

crystaltipps Sun 08-Sept-19 15:17:33

This report has been challenged like a lot of “don't eat this that and the other” reports. If you have fortified plant milk you won’t be short of vitamins. You can have an unhealthy vegetarian / vegan diet if you eat a lot of rubbish just as you can have an unhealthy meat diet. There is another medical study done which shows little difference in health outcomes between vegans and non vegans, though vegans tend to be slimmer and that has health benefits. We all know these studies can be challenged.

Hm999 Sun 08-Sept-19 15:34:15

Interested that a doctor says vegans need the protein found in meat. A vegan diet has plenty of protein. A lack of B12 surely is easily remedied with a B12 tablet.

Sussexborn Sun 08-Sept-19 15:55:23

It would be interesting if all of the organisations funding these findings had to say who paid for the study to be undertaken and what the reasoning behind it was. Facts and figures can be manipulated to produce the desired result.

I ignore 99% of these studies but do have one friend who takes them all at face value and gets really stressed trying to amend her diet to the latest scare.

This is why I take no notice about cholesterol tests I believe we know if our body needs subtracting from or adding to My mum ate the healthiest diet you could imagine she wasn’t vegan or vegetarian but ate no process food no sugar no salt very very little fat all home grown veggies and lived to 90 but her cholesterol was always over 7
I haven’t had mine taken for years but the last time I did about 10years ago they said you are borderline or a little over you should start on satins and I said no thanks if needs I ll sort it by diet not tablets however I ve never had it taken again

rosecarmel Sun 08-Sept-19 16:59:37

Truly .. My gut feeling is that even the very best, carefully produced foods are impacted by our not so healthy global environment, and as a result our bodies are impacted as well-

jura2 Sun 08-Sept-19 17:01:08

isn't Marmite a good source of B12?

jura2 Sun 08-Sept-19 17:07:41

Three B12-rich foods everyone can include in their diet, recommended by Net Doctor, are:

Shiitake mushrooms
Fortified cereal
Yeast extract (Marmite)

rosecarmel Sun 08-Sept-19 17:44:59

What is the source of B12 in fortified cereal? Often wondered but never investigated -

pinkquartz Sun 08-Sept-19 18:39:02

jura2

As I have a yeast/mould allergy I was unable to eat Marmite and mushrooms , and also fortified cereal is usually wheat and I am allergic to that also.
I am saying this to show that not everyone can eat those items.
I ended up needing B12 injections.
Everyone is different and we all need different foods but I want to include my own experiences because I was really into my veggie/vegan diets and wanted to avoid animal products. It was hard for me to change but I had to.

jura2 Sun 08-Sept-19 19:03:58

very difficult indeed if you are allergic to the very things you need to be healthy- a tough choice but one you need to make.

Daisymae Sun 08-Sept-19 20:08:05

Eating chicken increases the risk of cancer, according to recent research. The other point is that the research indicates much less risk of heart disease for veggies.

BradfordLass72 Mon 09-Sept-19 07:44:04

Don't believe all you read in the press.

Try to access the actual trial (if you are seriously worried).

See how many people were on that trial and exactly what sort of tests were carried out. Also, very important, who financed the trial.
I say this because so many companies and organisations with a vested interes, deliberately finance trials through universities which are meant to hit the press with just such scare stories as quoted above.

I've read 'statistics' based on trials of less than 100 people - but the press love that sort of thing.

Also remember that cholesterol levels have a genetic component.

jura2 curiosity: what are the symptoms of a yeast/mould allergy? Does psoriasis come into the spectrum?
