To pee or not to pee......

Unlike most of my friends I never needed to get up in the middle of the night to go for a pee. However, recently I have woken up a few times needing the loo. Sometimes I just ignore this urge and go back to sleep, whereas other times I give in and go. Just wondering what's the best thing to do. Interestingly, I've just returned from a holiday in Italy and never once woke up in the night with this dilemma!

I get up and wee as soon as the toilet dream kicks in - I have tried waiting but I always have to give in and get up.

I share jura's need to pee last thing. In my case I have that last pee, even if I have only got up for one second after getting into bed, and have only just emptied bladder. Interestingly the frequent night peeing is worse if I have had or am about to have a migraine (something I have always described as a whole body phenomenon, not just confined to the head).

If I was a man I would have a bottle by the bed!

I get the toilet dream too. It’s reassuring to know it’s not strange. Always looking for a public loo and finding them filthy and usually exposed too.

I’m up six times a night but I’m waiting for a kidney stone op?!

Sara65 Fri 04-Oct-19 21:46:00

That’s my dream too, often with really low walls in a very public place, or in an actual room, with people in it, or worse, when you find one and it’s too disgusting to go in, we must be toilet obsessed!

Oh no, I'm going to be too scared to go to sleep tonight, Mamacaz in case I dream of successfully finding a loo! shockgrin

rubysong Fri 04-Oct-19 16:17:22

It's not called the 'wee small hours' for nothing!!

NonnaJazz Fri 04-Oct-19 15:59:37

Mama Caz
That is exactly my dream too! Often lots of loos but with no doors or open to public!

MamaCaz Fri 04-Oct-19 12:49:59

SueDonim
I think I've had every version of this dream possible, including the sort of thing you mention. Another version is where the 'cubicle' turns out to be a whole roomful of toilets, where everyone can see each other!

I am going to make a confession now - I was about twelve when my dreams of finding a toilet first began, and on the first two occasions, I successfully 'found' one and did actually wet the bed! blush

SueDonim Fri 04-Oct-19 11:40:28

I get the toilet dreams, too, except mine usually consist of me sitting on the loo in my birthday suit and suddenly realising there is no door to the cubicle, which is open to a busy street. shock

I mostly don't get up at night but I returned from Australia a week ago and have been up every night since. At least it's down to just once now, generally two or three hours after I've gone to sleep. It's very worthwhile going when I do get up but I'm thinking I need to retrain myself, perhaps with the use of the book my dd has bought to pottytrain her 22month old. grin

Sparklefizz Fri 04-Oct-19 11:06:53

MamaCaz that is my dream too. I am thrilled that so many others have those toilet dreams. I thought I was the only one.

I think large nappies may be the order of the day in the future!
Order of the night might be more useful! grin
by 90 it’s about three times a night
Be hardly worth going to bed when I'm ninety.

First get to 90 then worry !
Meanwhile, enjoy your nightcaps! grin

I never sleep right through and always go once I wake up as I can never rest. Maybe you have picked up a bit of an infection while away so it might be a good idea to go to the drs with a urine sample.

If you have to go ... go. And at bedtime, I go twice... before I undress and get ready, and just before getting into bed. I used to wait and wait, hoping the feeling would disappear, but it just ruins a good night's sleep. Get up, go - back to sleep - enjoy.

I've been having to get up once a night for some years now. Although I hate it I tell myself I'm lucky at 82 that it's not worse. I keep expecting incontinence to arrive any time soon!

crazyH Fri 04-Oct-19 10:53:57

Harrigan, one of my friends wakes up her husband, half way through the night, and they both use the loo, one after the other Ofcourse ?

jaylucy Fri 04-Oct-19 10:33:24

Since being given medication for high BP it has got worse. When I mentioned it to my GP, he reckoned it was because your kidneys work better when you are lying down !
I also have the "loo search" dreams - glad I'm not the only one!

I get up in the night more than once if my Intestinal cystitis is playing up ...or i have a urine infection ..if it's a normal night and i haven't drank after 7 30pm ,i only get up the once say after about 4 hours sleep ..

Sussexborn Fri 04-Oct-19 10:09:07

Just typed a response and it vanished. Hate it when that happens! In brief:

There is medication but it’s only available on prescription.

Sometimes you can retrain your brain. First wait five minutes when you feel the urge, then extend it by another five minutes until you reach a reasonable gap between peeing. This is for day time if you feel you need to keep peeing and it becomes a nuisance.

annodomini Fri 04-Oct-19 09:44:46

It depends on when I have the latest drink in the evening. If I wait until bedtime, I usually get up in the night. However, even when I do have to go in the small hours, I can almost always go back to sleep immediately.

harrigran Fri 04-Oct-19 09:23:13

I have to get up at least twice a night, it is better if I can wake at same time as DH otherwise we are disturbing each other all night.

sodapop Fri 04-Oct-19 09:06:08

Hells bells I already get up three times some nights. Be hardly worth going to bed when I'm ninety.

lemongrove Fri 04-Oct-19 08:58:55

Really sodapop? ?
I read recently that getting up in the night ( for the loo) is common as we age, and that by 90 it’s about three times a night.Something to look forward to girls?

DanniRae Fri 04-Oct-19 08:54:06

If when we get older we pee more in the night because of a lack of a chemical or hormone why can't we be prescribed some of what's missing?

sodapop Fri 04-Oct-19 08:41:49

Don't think that's quite true lemongrove sometimes passing urine is involuntary.
