To pee or not to pee......

Unlike most of my friends I never needed to get up in the middle of the night to go for a pee. However, recently I have woken up a few times needing the loo. Sometimes I just ignore this urge and go back to sleep, whereas other times I give in and go. Just wondering what's the best thing to do. Interestingly, I've just returned from a holiday in Italy and never once woke up in the night with this dilemma!

I sometimes get up once or twice, sometimes not at all. If I feel the urge I can't really ignore it or I'd lie awake thinking about it - so I may as well get it done and then relax. Then hopefully get back to sleep.

Strange how many dreams of loo chasing there are.
My worst one was actually peeing on a seat in a bus/ cinema, or somewhere, then realising that it all came pouring through the seat.
How awful was that?

It could be worse! shock
"Two elderly gentleman from a retirement home were sitting on a bench under a tree when one turns to the other and says "Joe, I'm 83 years old now and I'm just full of aches and pains. I know you're about my age. How do you feel?" Joe replies "I feel just like a newborn baby"
"Like a newborn baby"?
"Yes; No hair, no teeth and I think I've just wet my pants"

I always get up at least once although recently it's sometimes twice. I also have the toilet chasing dream in various scenarios - all very frustrating! Before my husband was diagnosed with sleep apnoea some years ago he was getting up every hour probably as his sleep was so disturbed - he also had a bladder stone and prostate issues which didn't help. He still gets up at least once or twice now.

Just a cautious note. I personally know (knew in one case) two people who fell badly getting up at night breaking their femurs. Neither ever regained mobility and one has since died.

Always turn a light on and take care. One careless moment can ruin your life ?

As I am trying to lose a bit of weight I am eating only a very small evening meal. I'm finding this makes getting out in the night even more urgent. No idea why this should be.

Yes. Our bathroom (with the toilet that I use) is opposite the top of the staircase. Have to be very careful, especially when I get a bit disorientated.

I read somewhere that, when you wake up, lie still for 30 seconds, then sit on the edge of the bed for 30 seconds. This gives your body (?blood pressure) time to adjust and you are less likely to have a fall.

I always have to go twice every night and take ages to get back to sleep. I just put it down to getting older as my sister has told me she is the same and neither of us used to need to go in the night.

Farview you may have a urinary tract infection, worth getting checked out if your urine smells unpleasant.

I find it helps to go to the loo after I've put my book down, last thing before I turn the light off, whether I feel the slightest urge or not. It makes it a bit more likely that I'll sleep through but no guarantees.

I usually get up once probably because I m awake and I think if I go I ll go back to sleep
I too have massive dreams wandering around looking for toilets that have people in them or they ve moved or there’s queues and I m trying to get in them or doors won’t open or won’t close I go up and down stairs round corridors
The toilets I ve been into in my sleep

up every night for a pee, go in the dark as I am just a very short distance from the en suite, I leave the toilet lid up, guess why. Stumble back to bed, put 2nd pillow on 1st pillow, eat a dry oatcake for blood sugar and get straight back to sleep. Its better out than in keeping me awake

Never needed to go when I was younger, lately and probably also because I've been put on stronger bp medication, I need to get up twice then tend to have difficulty going back to sleep.

Always get up too....one night 2a.m ish DH just arrived in from night shift, I got up didn’t put the light on and over stepped the top step ( one of three) down I went fractured and dislocated my ankle!
Can’t stop getting up up but now always leave a night light !
I was only early 50s then and very fit then and now.

It's not so much the getting up, usually around 4am, it's the getting back to sleep again which I'm finding more and more difficult.

Sussexborn When I am at home I seem to need the loo a lot, but when I am out and about I can happily go 5 or 6 hours without a visit.
