Mix and match. Pills and supplements. What not to do and what works.

MissAdventure Wed 23-Oct-19 23:45:27

You're a glutton for punishment, you are! grin

MawB Wed 23-Oct-19 23:49:01

Not these then?

MawB Wed 23-Oct-19 23:49:34

Egg sucking instruction for grannies to follow

BlueSky Thu 24-Oct-19 00:17:18

That's interesting as I hadn't heard that grapefruit should be avoided when taking statins as well as the better known interaction with bp medication. I love grapefruit but will not risk it. Also as in my case st John's worth should not be taken while on bp medication.

BradfordLass72 Thu 24-Oct-19 05:05:18

And you have to be aware that if you do take St John's Wort, stopping it can bring on the glums or at worse, depression.

MawB Thu 24-Oct-19 07:45:28

It is well known Bluesky that grapefruit (or juice) is contra indicated with many drugs and usually says so in the accompanying leaflet.

MawB Thu 24-Oct-19 07:47:13

But that’s all right Bradfordlass according to another poster all anybody needs to do to snap out of depression is go for long walks hmmhmm

Urmstongran Thu 24-Oct-19 08:34:45

I love the photo of the cake Maw that made me smile as your response to Gabriella
?

Teetime Thu 24-Oct-19 09:12:55

I love M & Ms - they now make them in a large chocolate bar!!

Lazigirl Thu 24-Oct-19 09:43:19

There is no evidence that many supplements work, and haven't undergone the rigorous testing that accepted medications have, otherwise they would be in the mainstream medical formularies.

Something taken in supplement form does not necessarily affect the body in the same way as when in its natural form, for example in the food that we eat.

Many are harmless, but some are not. Natural doesn't mean risk free.

Bathsheba Thu 24-Oct-19 09:51:15

Maw do you really mean egg sucking instructions for 'laughable and faintly ridiculous old ladies' to follow? wink

Auntieflo Thu 24-Oct-19 09:54:04

Bathsheba, that will not be tolerated

Bathsheba Thu 24-Oct-19 10:02:37

Perhaps not Auntieflo... grin

Callistemon Thu 24-Oct-19 10:06:57

Or get on your bike MawB!

That cake is full of unhealthy sugar shock
I hope Nathan is not feeling sick now.

Still, it is better than the alternative (aspartame) which will be the next health crisis.

MawB Thu 24-Oct-19 10:13:19

Absolutely Bathsheba - how would we grannies cope without being taught?

MawB Thu 24-Oct-19 10:15:22

Or get on your bike MawB!
confused ????

PS I do not know or have a Nathan in my family

dragonfly46 Thu 24-Oct-19 10:18:37

When I was on targeted cancer treatment I was told not to eat grapefruit or pomegranate. Apparently grapefruit enhances the action of the drug.
Interaction with drugs is a minefield especially if you take supplements. The jury is still out on turmeric and St John's Wort and Black Cohosh are also very dubious.

Callistemon Thu 24-Oct-19 10:22:07

MawBroon I think the OP has a bicycle and has told us that she cycles every morning at about 6 am. Perhaps that is why she is so fit, all that fresh air.
I could be wrong, often am.

The name on the M&M cake is Nathan!

Callistemon Thu 24-Oct-19 10:23:15

Ps cycling as an alternative to long walks

Gonegirl Thu 24-Oct-19 10:23:55

I swear that a high dose vit D tablet makes my acid reflux worse. It's only a tiny little pill too. Looks so harmless.

Some pain killers are already supplemented with vit C. Don't know how that works but apparently it does. Not the best one to take at bedtime though I wouldn't have thought.

Gonegirl Thu 24-Oct-19 10:26:24

My son bought me some calcium tablets because I am losing so much height, but I don't like to take them. Worried about side effects (kidney stones?)

I'd eat that cake.

Callistemon Thu 24-Oct-19 10:28:20

Too late, Nathan's eaten it all.

Now he's having a sugar rush.

Kalu Thu 24-Oct-19 10:41:24

Medical advice from the Daily Fail???? ....... I don’t think so!

Pill popping?......??. Such empathy shown to those unfortunate enough having to rely on life saving meds but hey, some young female journalist based in New York, in another similar post, fills a gap in this rag with her medical knowledge ??

Gonegirl Thu 24-Oct-19 10:48:18

Any kind of a rush might do me good right now Callistemon. grin

I do wish Gabriella could cope with links. Just spent a good twenty minutes working through all the stuff under 'Health' in the Mail and still didn't find this one. Found yesterday's one ok.
