Drinking a glass of water that has stood bedside overnight

I was always told as a child (a long time ago) not to drink a glass of water that has stood bedside overnight. At my ripe old age now, I invariably do. I have 'googled' and found lots of reasons why it might not taste fresh or even be slightly off; but has anyone in the UK, or place of similar climate, ever been made ill by drinking this 'stale' water? I haven't and was wondering whether anyone else has.

I keep water by the bed.. Having rhinitis I get a blocked nose and nasal drip to the back of my throat which can make me cough. Also mouth breathing causes a dry mouth.

Well Cunco ? that turned out to be an interesting and amusing thread didn’t it?
I always take a glass of water for my bedside table, but also always cover it with a coaster ( alarming thoughts of floating insects being slurped down the throat in the thirsty small hours). I always drink most of it, but get rid of what’s left the next morning anyway.

Well after reading this thread I've googled it and apparently a glass of sparkling water is better than a glass of tap water. Anyway I've always taken a glass of water bottled or tap up to bed for as a long as I can remember with no ill effects! I usually drink it all otherwise I will have fresh water for the following night.

I too use a water bottle. I can wake up with a dry throat. It can be by my bed for three days/nights. It's just something to wet my whistle at night.

That's interesting Fennel. It seems that those who set out the laws of religion so long ago might have been onto something, like the prohibition of pork and prawns at a time when there were no fridges in hot countries (or anywhere else)

Me neither MamaCaz!

In fact, it it's tap water it often tastes chlorinated unless it has stood for a while, or been filtered.
Filtered water sometimes tastes rather flat to me.

When was this, timetogo2016?
Was it in the UK?

Makes me think of those expensive bottled waters, such as those that have been naturally filtered through glacial rocks for over 15 years.
I reckon that if they are still ok after 15 years, a few more hours overnight on the bedside table is unlikely to cause any problems, grin

I was told by my Doctor that you should never drink a glass of water after it has stood for 20 minutes as it will have harmful bacteria in.
So I fill a small bottle and take that to bed.

varian it's a branch of Judaism which goes more into the mystical aspects of everyday life than the practical ones that we follow.
You've maybe heard of Kabbalah?
There are several branches of Judaism, as with Islam and Christianity. And other religions probably.

I drink my water from a reusable cup with a lid so I know nothing has fallen into the water? I am a little odd anyway regarding things like this so maybe my view isn’t the norm??‍♀️

I always drink it the next morning if I haven't during the night.Never a problem and a waste to throw it away. However a friend always puts a lovely little carafe with a matching upturned glass over it on the bedside table when I stay and I keep meaning to buy one each for DH and I.This has reminded me.

I sometimes take a glass of water to bed with me and it stands around for three or four days before I drink it. I admit it tends to be a bit dusty, but its never made me ill. I have also swigged down a glass of water only to be told by my giggling family that the cat had already drunk some of it. Never been ill from that either.

What religion Fennel?

Fennel Wed 19-Feb-20 19:49:13

I'm another one who needs to take tablets during the night . So I have a glass of water next to my bed.
There's a strange belief in our religion that water should be covered if leaving for any length of time.
Maybe they knew about cats in those days too!

Oh me too MiniDriver56 I don't know how others can't taste it! It's revolting. I can also tell when milk is on the turn before anyone else. Maybe I should've been a wine taster.grin Thanks SueDonim for reminding me of that thread! Still makes me laugh so much. MN at its best! Getting back on track I don't think I've ever taken water to bed, but if I ever do I'll know all the dos and don'ts!

Have a mug with a lid - stops the cats drinking it! - by the bed but rarely drink it. I then use it for my vitamins etc. in the morning........ am still alive!

welbeck Wed 19-Feb-20 18:50:08

my insulted cup is the poundland red one with handle which i discovered the lid did not fit quite tight; now it's sulking and i can't find it.
come out, come out wherever you are, i didn't mean it, you can still be jolly useful; truce ?

MiniDriver56 Wed 19-Feb-20 18:49:49

I can tell the difference in a cup of coffee if the water had been re-boiled in a kettle. My DH says it’s not possible! However, I haven’t failed yet! My children know I can and he now believes it!

Harris27 Wed 19-Feb-20 18:20:28

I always take a glass of water to bed nd haven’t had any problems apart from knocking it over!

suelld Wed 19-Feb-20 18:17:06

I take tablets at night and tablets in the morning, I'm 74, I also have Sleep Apnoea and sleep with a mask - I also have kidney issues and am diabetic - apart from all that and more I'm fine !
I used to always take a glass of water to my bedside, but over the last decade I use a 500g closed 'pop' bottle, (sterilised every now and then with Milton tablets) with fresh water, having spilt the water in a glass more times than I care to remember. I find that the bottle is great and it's nearly empty by the time I'm dressed... Why buy one of these expensive 'water bottles'.

Baloothefitz Wed 19-Feb-20 17:36:20

I drink a whole jug of water during the night ,I'm always so thirsty ,not diabetic

spanielsmum Wed 19-Feb-20 17:06:19

Haha... I'm wondering why you have an 'insulted' cup? What did you say to it?

I used to take a glass of water to bed but more often than not I found my cat drinking from it or doing the aforementioned paw dip!
I now take a litre bottle to bed and it's always gone by morning. I'm a thirty sleeper.
The cat has his own dish upstairs now so he doesn't feel left out.
I do worry that bugs etc will get in a glass and in a half asleep state I'm not sure I would notice ?
As for stale it's less likely to be stale in a sealed bottle.
