I have received an email from Morrisons today. They are going to open from 07:00-08:00 for NHS workers only, and the doors will be manned.
Let us hope the other food stores do the same (but different hours).

A friend of mine tried to get a home delivery from Sainsbury’s
The first slot she could get was in 2 weeks!

Greta Sun 22-Mar-20 15:45:13

I've been trying to get a delivery from Waitrose online shopping. They don't even give you an estimated delivery time. Message: No delivery slots available.

So no food in the shops and no food online. What to do?

It should have been obvious to the supermarket what panic buying would lead to and it should have been stopped immediately.

pinkquartz Sun 22-Mar-20 15:49:35

As a housebound disabled person there is NO action from any supermarket yet to help me and others similar.
I have depended on online deliveries for years and now I can't get booking slots.....also all the supermarkets are miles away so it would be a great being deal to ask a stranger to help. My nearest neighbours have given up driving in the last year

What are we supposed to do if we cannot go out?

SalsaQueen Sun 22-Mar-20 15:51:40

I went to a Morrison's near me (3 miles away) this morning, and they were very well-stocked, apart from no toilet rolls, disinfectant, chicken breasts or minced beef (11am), but I got all the things I need- eggs, milk, bread, meat, butter, vegetables.

Tickledpink Sun 22-Mar-20 16:12:35

That’s my situation, I’m shopping for my elderly parents, and out on a limb!

SalsaQueen Sun 22-Mar-20 16:20:28

I got a few things for the elderly man who lives next door. I took the stuff round, then he said he was going out! Some of his mates were meeting up at the park, and they were each taking drinks/snacks and having a picnic!

etheltbags1 Sun 22-Mar-20 16:35:01

How on earth can i self isolate. I've got an elderly mother who can't go out. If she does it takes twice as long as she has copd and coughs and wheeze. I need my own shopping, I need to babysit or my dd cannot work, Dr says there's no shopping slots for home delivery for the next month. I have ashsma and am wheezing too. I need my medication which means going to pharmacy. There's nothing in place to back up these rules

etheltbags1 Sun 22-Mar-20 16:35:55

I meant my daughter says there are no shopping slots. I normally help her

mumofmadboys Sun 22-Mar-20 16:55:07

I am sure the crazy shopping will calm down. Apparently there is a billion pounds extra shopping in people's houses. Soon a lot of folk won't go out shopping because they have more than enough food ( and toilet rolls!). Then the rest of us will be able to get all the things we need.

Greciangirl Sun 22-Mar-20 16:59:29

What’s the point of a special slot for the elderly or NHS staff.
When they eventually get into the stores, there’s nothing there anyway.
I have given up going to the big supermarkets and getting almost all of what I need from local coop and corner shop.
Much better stocked than the giants.

But I want a home delivery

Ellie Anne Sun 22-Mar-20 17:04:16

Sainsbury’s weren’t registering new customers and Asda and Tesco were wellinto April

Molly10 Sun 22-Mar-20 17:18:00

It's a nice idea in principal to have these specific opening times but as one old lady said to me when she was told Asda were opening 6 am to 9pm for the over 70's:

"That's no good to me as my bus pass does not start till 9.30 am."

It's such a good point and will effect many so unless they allow them to get on public transport early those vulnerable elderly will miss out.

Peardrop50 Sun 22-Mar-20 17:25:17

Molly10 Andy Burnham was on tv recently saying Greater Manchester had relaxed bus pass rules for this very reason. So now vulnerable older people getting on buses with young vital working people. So the old get the virus and the young are late for work cos the buses are full. Not well thought out at all.

4allweknow Sun 22-Mar-20 17:29:16

I can understand why older folk are buying a bit more. Having gone to shops the past two weeks and seen empty shelves they will buy when it is on the shelves. Whilst all those defined times for emergency workers and those at higher risk hopefully work I have a feeling the general public will think the others will have gotten all they need and just continue to plunder the shelves when they go in. Unless stores ensure all the stock is available at the "special" times the situation won't change.

suziewoozie Sun 22-Mar-20 17:35:25

It’s NOT a nice idea. It’s PR unless there’s social distancing.

Chino Sun 22-Mar-20 17:50:26

I have to say well done to Iceland - since last week they have been reserving 7 - 9 am for pensioners.
I was also told that on Friday our local one was giving 2 toilet rolls free of charge to the pensioners

tickingbird Sun 22-Mar-20 18:28:00

In my experience Morrisons is the worst supermarket I’ve ever used. Useless shop and useless staff.

Baloothefitz Sun 22-Mar-20 18:51:40

But Guinea Girl you say you were shopping for a few people, how do you know the elderly man who bought the last 2 loaves ,milk & especially as he bought 2 papers was not buying for others too.

anxiousgran Sun 22-Mar-20 18:56:17

Tesco are doing 9am- 10am for NHS staff, but as they open at 7am, the shelves are empty anyway. No milk for Dil to get grandchildren, hardly any fruit and veg, no tins, no bread.
If it wasn’t so dispiriting, I’d laugh at the pointlessness.

They just want the cash pouring in, don’t care who from or how selfish.

Dwmxwg Sun 22-Mar-20 19:41:31

My daughter went to Tesco this morning st 9am for NHS workers. There were queues to get in and queues to pay. The shop was so busy no chance to "social isolate"". She said never again so we are going to rely on our local shops for the time being

LibbyR Sun 22-Mar-20 20:07:51

I’m an NHS worker, we’ve been working 13/14 hour days for the last 10 days. Every night when I’ve finished work I’ve driven around to several shops and supermarkets but been unable to get bread and milk. Today I went to Tesco armed with my NHS card and couldn’t park. People were parked up in their cars more than 3 hours before Tesco opened meaning a lot of NHS staff like me drove round and round and then left again as we could park. I got a loaf of bread and some milk from my local shop. Went to Pets at Home and got litter and food for my cats so I feel better now.

suziewoozie Sun 22-Mar-20 20:22:24

If I were to summarise this thread, it’s that the supermarkets are failing everyone except their directors in terms of their future bonuses and their shareholders. They have mounted a PR campaign that is utterly meaningless . Despite their huge IT infrastructure, they have not come up with one meaningful solution that has positively impacted the shopping needs of the vulnerable and NHS and care workers.

Gwenisgreat1 Sun 22-Mar-20 21:01:02

Looks like I have to wait 3 weeks for either delivery or click and collect from Sainsburies. Not sure I can wait that long for groceries!!

baggiebird Sun 22-Mar-20 22:38:25

On a different note I would like to say thank you to Jet2 airline for bringing empty planes to Spain and not abandoning us like Ryanair did with their customers who they shamefully abandoned telling them no flights until May .Well done lively staff very friendly and helpful still while working their last shift until who knows when
