Slipped down the stairs!

This morning I managed to slip down the last few stairs. Scraped my elbow and seemed to bounce on every step. I'm well padded but have bruised my derriere and if I'd still got my coccyx I think it would have broken. I asked my OH to take a photo of it (nods to Phoenix) with my phone. He wanted to know if the camera had facial recognition. Not too sure what he was insinuating there ... Does he think my face and my bottom are interchangeable? confused Perhaps I should change my profile picture on Facebook - would anyone notice the difference?

Jacq10, if you have osteoporosis maybe you should get Xrayed?

I wasn't wearing any shoes or slippers and the stairs are dog-leg, not straight. I tend to twist my foot when coming down the last little flight and I think I twisted off the step and just slid and bumped down the rest of them. Not rushing or carrying anything, I think I must not have been concentrating. I'm much more cautious now!

GrandmasueUK, ouch - why did that happen? Were you rushing, carrying something, maybe not paying attention?

Is your stair carpet worn (or the soles of your slippers)? - do check. Of course, having minimised further risk, it'll be something else next time!

Hi Franbern My OH did actually put up a small rail at the bottom three stairs which has been invaluable!

Well, at least you were offered a reconstructed navel. Nice of them to do so.

When I had my Ileostomy (30 years ago), complications meant that I had four operations in five days. When I eventually defied the medics and did not die, and finally got moved out if ITU, I discovered that the result was long, long, scar running down my middle from just below my breasts right down between my legs and my anus had also been all sewn up. My two eldest (teenage) daughters who had spent much of the time at the hospital with me during all of this called them my Teddy Bear stitches!!!

About 14 years back one of my daughters was staying with me for a weekend, with their newest baby. (My stairs were straight, but the banister rail only came up two thirds of the stairs.

After we all went to bed, I remembered something I needed to do downstairs, trying to go very quietly - although the light was still on their bedroom - slipped on second stair down, managed to sit backwards, and bumped down the entire flight on my bum. Daughter and SiL rushed down to help me and to tell me off.

Amazingly, except for some bruising and a lot of shock I was okay. However, a few weeks later - ring at my front door and there was someone from Adult services, saying they had been notified that I needed some aids. My daughter, on her return home, had notified them. I was mortified at first, but they came and put in a rail up the other side to the banister and this ran the entire length of the stairs. As time went on, this rail was just about the only think that meant I could continue to use those stairs, giving me something to pull myself up by and something to hang on to when going downstairs.

Hope you recover reasonably quickly.

@DiscoGran They removed my belly button with a huge incision across my stomach. The surgeon asked me if I wanted a new one making (I have no idea how!). I asked him why and he said he wondered if I might want a piercing! As I was an overweight 57-year-old who only had my ears pierced when I turned 50 I declined the offer. I now just have a scar running from one side to the other!

I am still suffering when sitting down - hoping this eases soon!

I doubt your face and bottom are interchangeable.

Reminded me of an episode of Foyle's War. RAF pilot cheeking Matron in hospital. She had remarked she would as soon have seen his rear as his face, or some such thing, and he got back with, "You are looking at it, that's where the skin grafts came from!"

I do hope your sore sit-upon is recovering.

DiscoGran Wed 13-May-20 14:48:49

Hope you feel better soon, Grandmasue.? Incidentally, how did they remove your belly button? ?

quizqueen Wed 13-May-20 13:57:41

I did this about 4 months ago. It did take about 2 months before all the soreness disappeared.

Grandmafrench Wed 13-May-20 13:55:34

I have just seen this thread. Honestly, if anyone should need cheering up today, now's your chance. Grandmasue's own description of her fall from grace is hilarious enough.

As for her DH. Well, he's a brave one, I'll give him that.

Some of the comments here, whilst filled with sympathy and empathy, are priceless. Thanks to everyone for that. And, I sincerely hope that you lose no more valuable bits of your anatomy, Gs, and that your aches and pains are coming to an end grin, mostly behind you grin and normal service has been resumed.

Oh grandmasue I do feel for you. Stairs are dangerous, aren't they? As you may know I fell down the last few stairs two years ago and what with one thing and another I'm still waiting for my teeth. A gum full of ironmongery waiting for the implants.
Never mind, these things are sent to try us - and they do. Get well soon.

Jane10 Wed 13-May-20 12:59:26

Which is?

Oopsadaisy3 Wed 13-May-20 12:21:58

Reminds me of the ‘Rezackly disease’ joke.

Jane10 Wed 13-May-20 11:49:37

Blimey it comes to something when washing dishes is your most comfortable position! cupcakecafe

GrandmasueUK Wed 13-May-20 11:37:15

Thank you - I do have some mobility problems as well, so walking hurts my hip, and sitting hurts my bottom! Leaning is most comfortable, so washing dishes (although we have a dishwasher) is my go-to position now grin

Jane10 Wed 13-May-20 11:33:28

What rotten bad luck GrandmaSue just when we're all sitting about more than usual. Hope it eases soon.

GrandmasueUK Wed 13-May-20 10:59:20

Thank you for asking - it still hurts when I sit down! I do have a special cushion now and that does help, but I'm surprised how long the pain has lasted!

ExD Sun 03-May-20 18:11:40

How are you feeling now? When I fell last July and fractured the top lumbar vertebra it upset a very old problem I had lower down and now the pain from that is worse that the latest injury. I hope you've avoided that one.
There's no physio available now of course, so do some gentle exercise when you feel up to it.
I found swimming helpful and have deteriorated seriously since it stopped. All the best,

GrandmasueUK Mon 27-Apr-20 15:42:14

Thank you ExD, another of my friends suggested rolling a blanket into a sausage shape and turning into a donut - I will have a look at doing that. Not got any arnica - but will keep an eye out for it on line!

ExD Mon 27-Apr-20 11:27:08

Well no-one's watching........!
Can you arrange some cushions and pillows so you can sit comfortably, one of those ring cushions would be ideal. I'd send you one if conditions weren't as they are (but if things weren't as they are you would have send DH, if he's still alive, out to buy one)!Do you have any Arnica or Aloe Vera for the bruising?
Strange how elbows catch it!

GrandmasueUK Mon 27-Apr-20 11:17:52

Thank you for your good wishes. I had my coccyx removed about 20 years ago, after years of pain. (I also had my belly button removed when I had sepsis - but that's a different story). I'm losing weight a small piece at a time! I wish I still had my special cushion now though. I don't know how I managed it, but I scraped my left elbow and managed to badly bruise a toe on my right foot. I now have a lovely black bottom and find lying on my side is the only way I can get comfortable. Either that or bending over and arm of the sofa. grin

SalsaQueen Sun 26-Apr-20 20:49:49

I've slipped on my stairs a couple of times. The first time, my bum was very badly bruised for weeks.

The second time, I slipped on the last 3 steps, fell awkwardly, sprained my ankle - it took weeks to heal and I was in agony. We had booked to go away for a few days and I spent a lot of the time away with my foot resting on a pillow sad

Luckygirl Sun 26-Apr-20 12:52:58

Please take care folks!!!

I too am intrigued about the absence of coccyx! - where has it gone?!

jacq10 Sun 26-Apr-20 11:45:53

I am now one of the walking wounded as well!! Out on my walk yesterday I was three houses away from home and fell flat. Not quite on my face but crashed on to the pavement. I think I tripped on a concrete slab which covers a drain. Luckily there was no blood but as the day went on I got really sore and stiff and today pain level has increased. I'm sure there is nothing broken as no sharp pain. Not keen on increasing dosage of pain killers which I take for osteoarthritis in my hands. Usually get a steriod injection for this but obviously not at the moment so taking pain killers anyway. Haven't even dressed yet but sun is now out so maybe a bit of heat on the body would help?

CherryCezzy Sun 26-Apr-20 02:17:14

Hope you haven't done any long term damage Grandmasue.
What was your OH trying to say? Surely not insinuating you're an a......e! I'd have your OH on toast ?
Joking apart, there seems to be quite a lot of injuries happening to GNs atm. I wonder if it's the lockdown making people a little more cavalier at home or is it just coincidence.
I'm glad you only fell down a few steps. In my time I have fallen down whole flights of stairs, including concrete stairs. It's no joke. I have the scars to this day. I hope yours are not long lasting.
