We’ve all heard that magic number of aiming for 8 hours sleep per night (we certainly wish!) But how much sleep do you ACTUALLY get a night?
And, more importantly, do you think you get enough? ? moon

I get about 6 hours on a good night, the problem is hubby - I try and go to bed about 11pm but he wants to stay up and watch ‘rubbish’ on the tv until midnight. If I fall asleep I can guarantee he disturbs me as he is like a fairy elephant walking round the house/bedroom etc. Then he just gets in bed and falls asleep instantly, grrrr. ??

Usually asleep by 10pm but always wake up during the night to use the loo and then up around 7am

Flossieflyby Tue 16-Mar-21 10:50:39

I usually get around 7 hours sleep, but unsure about the quality

I have never had a problem with getting 8 hours sleep and could easily sleep for longer. But over the last 18 months things have changed. Takes me longer to fall asleep and waking frequently when I'm too hot - age related obviously - but still feel like I'm getting enough sleep.

I've struggled with sleep since I hit the menopause, before that I slept the sleep of the dead, hit the pillow was off like a light till 7 am ish. I miss those days, now I find myself awake early hours of the morning, either over heating or brain going into over drive. I don't know how many good hours I get, I perceive I'm dozing but not in a deep sleep, my husband tells me I'm asleep when he gets up to use the loo, he tells me this so often that sometimes I feel compelled to say when I hear him moving "hello I'm awake" just to prove him wrong!

I'd like to experience the sleep the woman who is presently on the front of the GN web page is having, she looks blissful, clearly no tossing, turning and over heating going on there!

I try to go to bed at the same time every night. I go upstairs at 10:30 pm, get ready for bed, drink my milk, take my medication and watch TV (The Papers or News on BBC News channel) or listen to the radio or BBC Sounds for half an hour.

I have tinnitus, so play various relief sounds to mask that, once I switch off the light and snuggle down at 11:15 ish. On a good night I'll fall asleep in 5-10 minutes, but sometimes I'm still awake an hour or two later.

On a good night I get around 7 hours sleep and get up once to go to the toilet. On a bad night I can lay awake for hours, drift into sleep and wake up with bad dreams, wake up early and not be able to get back to sleep. No matter what kind of night I've had I try to get up around the same time (8:00 am) and try not to have any daytime naps.

Lockdown has certainly affected my sleep - I'm guessing a lack of physical exercise and higher levels of stress and worry. My husband says I sometimes speak or cry out in my sleep, which I've never done before!

My sleep varies depending on what Ive been doing in the day. I get a much better sleep the more active Ive been especially if that activity has been mostly outdoors. I aim to be in bed by 10/10.30pm , generally read for 10/15 minutes then snuggle down. Generally awake anything from 5.30/6.30pm. Seems Im pretty fortunate compated to lots of you.

I got 5 hours 5 minutes of frequently interrupted sleep last night. According to my Fitbit that was deemed ‘fair.’
I am not sure how bad it has got to be for a poor nights sleep.

I sleep a good 8 hours. I keep the bedroom cool and read a page or two, then quickly drop off.

I can fall asleep in mid conversation with someone, I can fall asleep in the cinema, at a concert or theatre or during a talk, I can fall asleep whilst reading bedtime stories to my granddaughters but.....when I wake during the night, which I do frequently, I find it extremely difficult to get back to sleep so am always up and 'getting on' with things by 5 am at the very latest. I have tried various alternative treatments, meditation and followed a programme called 'Sleepio' to no avail. So I have learnt to embrace my sleeping pattern and to accept that that is how I am. Interestingly, I have an autoimmune condition and many others like me also experience sleep disturbances.

6-7 hours a night with usually 2 wake ups .
Vastly improved since getting a weighted blanket . Previously 4-5 hours and waking every 90 minutes almost every night.
Figures from a sleep monitor.
Happy with how much I get .

LynneH Tue 16-Mar-21 05:03:48

I’m waking up at least every two hours, and only averaging about 6 hours a night at the moment

My sleep varies significantly. I try to make myself as comfortable as possible, and don't drink fluids just before going to bed. I have a bladder condition that makes things very difficult for me to get a good night's sleep. But a cool dark bedroom cotton sheets , and a well ventilated room helps me . In the nights I don't sleep well I have to have cat naps during the day . That way i don't become so irritable .

I get between 7 and 8 hours' sleep a night but I am still always tired in the morning. I think my sleep is often disturbed. I get too hot and my partner doesn't sleep well, so he's up and down, getting in and out of bed and although I often don't notice, I think it must disturb my sleep. I definitely sleep better if I don't have alcohol in the evening and go to sleep before 11pm!

flowersfromheaven Mon 15-Mar-21 22:28:57

I have around 7 hrs a night due to getting up for work but twice a week I do sleep about 9 hrs which I call my catch up sleep.

kathcake Mon 15-Mar-21 21:54:48

From 6-8 hours sleep a night. Often I wake up randomly and take a while to get back to sleep.

Kittyme1 Mon 15-Mar-21 21:22:19

On average 5 or 6 hours, on a good night which isn't very often I might stretch to 7-8.

fishnships Mon 15-Mar-21 21:20:32

Possibly 7 hours per night. One thing that helps is to finish eating by 8pm. No late night snacks allowed! This means the body can concentrate on repairing itself whilst resting, rather than having to digest food at the same time. Makes sense to me!

moleswife Mon 15-Mar-21 21:08:39

Usually I get between four and six hours in bed and an hour or two in the chair 'watching' TV!

stollerf Mon 15-Mar-21 20:50:11

I usually get to bed at midnight. Seem to wake at 6:30 and then drift in an out of sleep until 9, but cannot get a solid sleep. Have to get up once during the night for the toilet. How i wish i could have a solid 8 hours, so as not to feel tired during the day.

molly1977 Mon 15-Mar-21 19:39:31

I usually wake up a few times on a night.I have recently had a drink of calamine tea before bedtime and I find I drift off to sleep quicker and have a better nights sleep.
7 hours is a good nights sleep sometimes more or less

Harris27 Mon 15-Mar-21 19:36:18

I usually go to bed at the same time each evening I read for a while hoping to drop off. I do have the room warm but not hot. I always like to have at least five to six hours sleep, other wise I can’t function.

kristanybryn Mon 15-Mar-21 19:13:23

I usually go to bed at roughly the same time each evening as I understand that it is important to keep a good routine. I go to bed at 11.00pm and wake at 7am so I normally have between 7 and 8 hours sleep each night.

Jane43 Mon 15-Mar-21 19:13:16

I usually settle down to sleep at around midnight. On a good night I get about 6 hours sleep and doze a bit before getting up at around 8am.
