We’ve all heard that magic number of aiming for 8 hours sleep per night (we certainly wish!) But how much sleep do you ACTUALLY get a night?
And, more importantly, do you think you get enough? ? moon

7 - 7.5 hours.
I'm in bed by 21:00 and get up at 04:30. I had awful problems after chemo 7 years ago not so much with insomnia but with the fear of insomnia, which gave me poor sleep. I'm happy to have found a pattern that works most nights.

I get about 8 hours most nights but there are days when I just cannot drop off. Also my sleep is broken by trips to the loo which is annoying. The one time I really had trouble sleeping was when I had depression I used to wake in the early ours and could not get back to sleep at all

I was diagnosed with sleep aponea several years ago, I probably developed it gradually from mid 40's onwards. I have always snored but it got worse and my husband who was a poor sleeper complained so we sleep in separate rooms.I could not get used to CPD device so have had to cope with about 6 hours of poor quality sleep at night. I was told by the Sleep Disorder unit that I woke on average 30 times an hour! I usually get up once or twice to go to the loo.I often fall asleep around 9.30pm when watching TV.Since lockdown I go to bed between 10-10.30pm. Before I was often out in the evening and getting more exercise. I am trying to exercise at least 90 minutes a day but have still put on weight in lockdown which does not help with aponea but I am only borderline normal to overweight for my height. If I really need an afternoon nap to cope I take it but try not to have more than an hour in bed. I have no problem getting to sleep at night but on occasion am unable to get back to sleep when I wake in the night.I never remember any dreams which I think is due to not getting into deep sleep because of the aponea.

I retire upstairs about 10pm, then get ready to sleep, listen to the radio or watch the news. So I sleep from about 11pm until 6am ish, usually a toilet trip at 2 or 3am then back to sleep.
In total I get 6/7 hrs, am up early for DGC care during the week and a bit of a live-in at the weekend.

cookiemonster66 do you use a cpap machine for your sleep apnoea? I have had one for a few years now and it`s changed my life! No more awful morning headaches or daytime sleepiness.

Scentia Mon 15-Mar-21 17:57:17

I usually get about 5 or 6 but the last 2 nights I have had 9 and 10.5 respectively. I seem to have chilled out since I have a diagnosis and I am allowing myself to rest and sleep as I need to instead of feeling lazy and anxious I am sleeping too much. That probably makes no sense but it does to me?

BBbevan Mon 15-Mar-21 17:56:44

About 6 , I think. I always have an awake gap in the middle. No idea why.

Sararose Mon 15-Mar-21 17:49:07

I forgot to say that my fitbit tells me that i get over 8 hours sleep most nights.

Sassie1961 Mon 15-Mar-21 17:44:20

Probably somewhere between 6-7 hours, depending on when the cat wakes us up wanting to go out, or a trip to the loo in the early hours. Not really one for long lie ins anyway.

I have fibromyalgia, so sleep is usually 2 hour chunks. Medication doctors prescribe makes me constipated and I feel foggy during the day. Pain never gives you a break.
I'm sure there are other fibro warriors on GN and those with their own difficulties. Can't imagine what 8 hours sleep would be like.

PaperMonster Mon 15-Mar-21 17:07:19

I get about 7 or 8, but only feel fully refreshed if I have about 9 or 10. I’ve always needed a lot of sleep.

QuaintIrene Mon 15-Mar-21 16:58:52

About five hours. I used to need lots of sleep but not now. I can always turn over for another 10 minutes no matter what.

Neilspurgeon0 Mon 15-Mar-21 16:55:05

Seven normally, round about ten thirty to round about five thirty to six. I wake refreshed but not quite ready to get up so I doze and day dream for fifteen or twenty minutes before I get going.

Rowsie Mon 15-Mar-21 16:51:20

I need about 8 hours sleep a night but I don't often get that. I struggle a bit with getting off to sleep so usually go to sleep about 12 or 1am but don't get up until between 7-9 am.

Sparkling Mon 15-Mar-21 16:42:33

So envious of those of you that sleep well. I’m just a poor sleeper.

rozina Mon 15-Mar-21 16:40:47

I get 10 hours sleep a night and could just sleep and sleep and sleep! I'm really worried about this, I don't know what's the matter with me. I am interrupted by neighbours several times during the night, that might be the case. Another strange thing is that my dreaming time starts about 7am to 8am in the morning. I know this as I'm usually woken by neighbour noise at 7am. I'm usually in the middle of a really interesting dream and then I can tell my 10 hours are up. I think I would sleep right through the day every day if I didn't force myself up!

Lorelei Mon 15-Mar-21 16:40:31

My sleep pattern is rubbish and most nights I'd say it varies between 3-6 hours and some of that is disturbed. Sometimes I'll get a bit more by dozing on the sofa after getting out of bed. I don't think I get enough sleep, or certainly not undisturbed sleep, at the right time. Because I have chronic health problems there will be the odd day when I'll sleep, on & off, for the best part of the day, and other days where I get hardly any sleep at all for a few days running. Some periods of ill health I'll try to sleep as much as I can but it's not always possible.

Bodach Mon 15-Mar-21 16:37:02

7.5 to 8 hours every night. I have always been able to go to sleep very quickly just about anywhere, and this has continued into old age. The corollary is that, on the rare occasions when extreme pain or some other factor stops me from getting to sleep, I am extremely discombobulated....

Maggiemaybe Mon 15-Mar-21 16:19:46

I find I sleep fitfully if I know I’ve to wake up early. It’s as if I can’t trust myself to hear the alarm, though it’s never been a problem.

Lollin Mon 15-Mar-21 16:17:36

Varies depending on so many things not least pain levels. Good times 7-8 hours bad 4-5 and not all in one go.

Gwenisgreat1 Mon 15-Mar-21 16:10:32

Try to settle at 11.50pm then I will probably wake once or twice for the loo. Have been waking recently around 6.30 and feel tired most of the day.

madeleine45 Mon 15-Mar-21 16:03:32

U am getting about 4 - 5 hours . Physically I have a bad back ,from slipped discs and can wake me up just turning over. I try to get back to sleep but once I am wide awake I just put the light on and a supportive pillow and then either read a book or write things in a notebook. I do find that any worry I may have seems worse in the night, so writing it down helps me to put it to one side until the morning. However I am now in the middle of moving house, which is very stressful and now as a widow and with corona rules etc it adds to the stress. So you have to accept that this is just a stressful time and so sometimes I put radio 3 on quietly , read for a little or when my back hurts I just get up and put a dressing gown on and look out of the window for a while. So if my mind is buzzing I sort some books out , what is coming with me and what given away. Then I have been ploughing through many photos from over the years. This tends to be quite good, sorting photos to pass to my sone and stepdaughter , looking at the many gardens I have created. My husband was a very good photographer and so I look at the pictures and remember the time it was takenn and write dates and names of people in the picture on the back so that in the future when you have forgotten who or where it is , you can check it. As the photos tend to be taken at happy occasions , it is both soothing to remember the occasions and I am also sorting them out to pass them to the various people so it is both sorting , listing and yet there is no absolute need to do a specific number and if you find a photo of yourself that you think is terrible you can rip it up. Quite a soothing job.

I go to bed about 11pm but rarely fall asleep straight away. Then I wake about 2ish until about 4. I then sleep until about 6.30 but wake feeling very sleepy so sometimes go back to sleep until 8ish. I am often sleepy in the afternoon but make an effort to keep awake on the off chance I will have a good nights sleep. I think I sleep about 6 hours.

Miriam Mon 15-Mar-21 15:56:39

I get about 6 hours sleep which is enough for me, I have never needed a lot of sleep unlike my husband who drops off several times during the day! I find I do need to read until I am almost asleep then most nights as soon as I put the light out I am asleep. Occasionally I toss and turn and struggle to get to sleep but that is the exception.

sharon103 Mon 15-Mar-21 15:45:01

I'm a night owl, always have been and rarely go to bed before 2.30 -3.00 am
Sometimes it takes me 2-3 hours to nod off. I can't switch my brain off.
I get up when I wake up around 11am.
