As some of you know I have been trying to find out about my state pension and see if I am getting the correct amount for some time now with no success, however today after using a phone number provided by a very nice member on here(thanks Shandy) after about 20 minutes I did get through, I was speaking to a very nice lady and one of the first thing she asked me was for my national insurance number which I know off by heart have done for years but could I think of it to give to her, I could not, I was so embarrassed but she was so nice and took other details, date of birth etc about halfway through I remembered it and said” I can give it to you now” and we both laughed but it was quite worrying..?‍♀️

Glad you’ve had success. I hope you were given good news. Like you I can recite my national insurance number by heart. I will own up to forgetting my debit card PIN number which I’ve used for years when I filled up with diesel. Luckily I also had cash.

I'm impress you could remember your NI number... I would have to look it up. Well done you.

Thanks Vis....OB1....Yes she put my mind at rest that I was getting the correct amount of pension, she did try and explain it to me but my head is no good with that sort of stuff so I just thanked her and said it was a nice change to speak to somebody so kind and so helpful instead of a bloody automated message and she laughed. She did say something about everything changed in 2016 but by then my eyes had misted over....?

I’m glad you got it sorted, Shinamae. smile

No need to be embarrassed about the NI number. I don’t know mine off by heart, so have written it in my diary. Only I haven’t. It turns out the number I quoted to Future Pensions was the National Savings reference number I need to check my Premium Bonds. blush

They were very patient and waited while I went off in search of the right details.

i think the NI number is shewn on bank statements for payments from DWP.
if you cannot find it elsewhere.
i have the original dusty manilla card i received when i started full time work, i keep it between the sliding glass in the bureau.
so i know where it is, it doesn't move, and i can read it without touching it, as long as i can bend down with a torch.
anyway i know where to find it.

Glad you got through!

Also, A Big Thank you!! I came across a post of yours about not getting the right amount the other day, and it made me go and check my letter - I'm at the fortnight to go stage. I'm over £20 a week short of the full amount ?
I foolishly hadn't checked, because a) I Know I've got enough years in and b) the figures for the amount I'm to get were basically the right digits but in the wrong columns, a bit like Eric Morecambe's notes!!

I've written to them to ask for an explanation, and for a statement of the difference it would make to my pension if I made additional contributions, can't find that anywhere.

I'm very encouraged that you got through, And that you got a nice person!!

Thank you again and I'm glad your mind is set at rest.

Ps, I can rattle off my NI number like my Mum could her Army Serial Number - but thanks for the tip: if I'm brave enough to ring, I'll write it down first!!

I have my NI No listed on my mobile phone list of numbers as 'NINO' it is very useful if you suddenly need it for dealing with ISAs and such.

I can read it so long as I bend down and use a torch

This made me laugh out loud welbeckgrin
Sounds a bit like me!
