Anyone else had partial hip replacement following fracture?

I managed to fall and break my hip in late January and had a partial replacement. I had a fair amount of pain in the first few weeks from damaged muscles and tendons but that has now pretty much disappeared. I’ve moved from a Zimmer, to an elbow crutch and am now using a single stick. I’m driving again and can manage a lot of jobs in the house. On the other hand I can’t seem to sort out my balance and need the stick. I can manage short distances in the house without it but if I try anything longer then my leg just doesn’t seem strong enough to support me so back to the stick! I just wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience and how long did it take them to get rid of the stick. I am having regular physio.

What does your physio say? I bet it’s ‘ it takes time’. I can’t help you but would have thought after 6 months you should now be completely recovered and not need a stick.

You may wish to have a look at the bonesmart.org website for all things hip and knee related. It’s a UK/US website and has loads of advice and Qs&As.

Hi. I had a total hip replacement in June. Mine was due to osteoporosis. I’m still using one crutch for the same reasons as you…Instability. I’m doing all the physio and walking quite a bit, but don’t seem to be making any progress towards ditching the crutch/stick. It’s very frustrating.

Why did you only have a partial hip replacement Katek? Just an idle enquiry. I expect evening up all the tendons, muscles and ligaments was a shock to the system. Do you have balance problems? Maybe that's why your crutch is a comfort?

I have groin pain which I was told much to my surprise, might be a hip problem. awaiting appointment ( however long a wait that is).

Sorry to hear you’re still having issues as well helena - can well understand your frustration! I only had partial replacement aveline as I had no underlying problems such as osteoporosis or arthritis. I am having balance problems as my gait has been altered - it’s just going to take time I suppose. I’m not a very patient patient I’m afraid!
