I have been experiencing this lately and last night was horrendous. It starts around the ankle area and travels up both my legs. I try and get out of bed to stretch my leg muscles which can help but how do you stretch the muscles around your ankle??? It is so painful when it happens and today both ankles feel painful and just like the cramp could return at any moment if i move incorrectly. Someone said to take more salt in my diet and make sure i am hydrated, anyone else got tips that work???

Drinking salt water is actively discouraged by medics and even featured on QI. Salt tablets are no longer issued to serving personnel in hot countries. I was prescribed quinine for night cramp some years ago but its not prescribed now. As has already been said many brands of tonic water do not contain quinine. I am prescribed Hydroxychloroquine as I have Lupus but I still get cramp occasionally.

I used to suffer bad cramps probably weekly.I then read about keeping a tablet of soap between the bed sheets.I tried this and haven't suffered any cramps for the last six months.

I recently did a long coach journey and that night I had the worst cramp ever, - all night. So now I am drinking tonic water plus lots of liquids, taking magnesium tablets, and trying to stay mobile as much as possible.

I’m another that uses a magnesium spray from Holland and Barrett. I use the one for sensitive skin, a quick spray on each leg before bed, no rubbing in required seems to do the trick.
