My Dad had his own GP practice. He'd had to buy it in the 1950s. Most of his patients were NHS but he also had private patients. He believed in freedom of choice.

The move towards changing GP contracts started well before Labour came into power greenlady102, because GPS were unable to cope with the ever increasing demands on them. This is an interesting read, which summarises the history of GP contracts and the OOH services.

It’s not quite true that anybody can set up a GP service, there has to be a defined need in a specific area and the process of recruitment is managed at a local level by the relevant Health Authority. GP practices receive almost all their income from the NHS, and an increasing number of practices are now managed by Health Authorities as they are not viable/attractive enough to maintain a GP partnership. Those managed practices are the ones which have been taken over by private companies.

GP's are not a part of the NHS, they are contractors. Anybody who wishes to do so can apply to set up a GP service and be paid for it by the NHS if the place they offer to set it up needs GP services. As with any other contractor, they have to comply with the contract that is set out by the commissioning body. oh and PS GP's have never been part of the NHS, they have always been contractors.
And just to remind folk, it was the Labour party who set up the money losing PFI system which the NHS is still paying for, and the Labour party who allowed GP services to opt out of providing OOH services without correspondingly reducing what GP practices were paid. I was there in the NHS at the time and if I told you what was said then I too would be banned from GN

GP practices are owned by the Partners in that Practice.
Its the Doctors /Partners who have sold it, they would have made quite a bit of money from the sale of the building and practice.
Not the NHS selling it off.

Although the government run the nhs we the public are paying for it through our taxation and national insurance, I cant say what I really think as I would be banned from gransnet! I have read that an American health insurance company has taken over 37 GP practices in London, sparking fears the NHS is being sold by stealth. Its a frightening thought that his could happen to our NHS!
Maggie Thatchers government were Britains downfall when our companies and industries were privatised!! and still the tories continue to destroy our country!
