How many unopened packs of unused prescription drugs do you have or have you returned for destruction?

I would be interested to know how many unused prescription drugs people either have in their homes or have returned to the chemist for destroying in the last year.
On another thread someone described this as a "drop in the Ocean" when it came to NHS waste, but I think it may add up to a serious amount of wastage that perhaps could be better managed if seen as a wasted resource, rather than a "drop in the ocean".
I was always taught to look after the pennies etc!

None at all, I get a monthly prescription and use them all up.

None here either,I did have a period where Boots insisted on giving me my HRT every month instead of 3 monthly ,that was before the shortage so luckily when the shortage arrived I had enough to see me through .Only other medication I have is Ramipril for HBP,I've been on those for decades and get them every 28 days.

None - I probably have one extra Ventolin inhaler, only because I haven’t needed it much this last month. And I need to keep one in the car at all time.

I am going to have to speak to our local pharmacy. Since Covid my GP surgery has insisted we had to have a designated pharmacy who would request our repeat prescriptions. Somehow mine has got hugely out of synch and I have one month's supply left with another two month's supply having just been supplied. I like that I no longer have to go to the surgery to submit the repeat requests, but if I did this build up wouldn't have occurred. I really don't expect that I'm unique in this.

None, get my prescription fulfilled when I’m down to a couple of weeks, they’re all used as appropriate.

Meant to say, I order repeats through the NHS app and that goes to the pharmacy directly.

I have mine boxed these days into pill packs. I no longer have wastage and I am healthier...it is a double win!

If my dh orders medication a bit too early ( if we are going away perhaps) it is often refused so there must be some sort of check on when prescriptions were last ordered.

My mum and mil had medication in bags stuffed full. Only found after clearing their homes. My mum had dementia so was forgetful but no excuse for mil.

growstuff Sat 13-Nov-21 14:23:56

None. I pick them up every month and use them.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 13-Nov-21 15:03:29

None. One item in my monthly prescription gives slightly more than a month’s medication so I get to a point where one month I don’t order that item. I do always have two spare ventolin inhalers though as I keep them in all sorts of places, bag, gardening jacket, car etc but all get used. I hate waste.

None I don't have any regular prescription drugs

Calendargirl Sat 13-Nov-21 15:11:18

None. I think some older people might have unused medication, because they get confused about taking it, re-ordering it and so on. Saw a chap recently taking a huge bag of his late mother’s medicines into the pharmacy after her death.

Also think of some elderly relatives of mine, laughingly telling us they had so many boxes of paracetamol they were giving them away to friends, family, neighbours, et al. It never occurred to them to stop ordering them when they had plenty. They thought it was clever!

We’ve just cleared my de-facto brother in law’s house. The amount of part used, brand new & out of date medication was off the scale. We were absolutely appalled. He had stacked it all over the house. Dressings & huge containers of skin softening emollients were also additional to the medication stash.
Fortunately the local pharmacy took it all back to dispose of.
My fella was ashamed that his brother, recently passed away, was so irresponsible.

I had two bags of meds after my DH died including morphine and oramorph the pharmacy took it all for disposal..

I have a 3 monthly repeat prescription. I e-mail surgery when I'm running low but have sometimes been refused because I've ordered a few days early.
If I'm going away I have to explain why I need an early repeat.

I returned a black bin liner of unused drugs to the surgery when my OH died. These accumulated basically because over many years the medics kept changing his drugs and we were left with packets and packets which he no longer took. I hung on to them in case they changed them back and they were in date. To be fair, his problems were very difficult to solve and they really were doing their very best; but the wastage worried me dreadfully. But nothing I could do.

MissAdventure Sat 13-Nov-21 15:49:24

Ive6got a lot.
That's because I'm having appointments at two different hospitals who keep prescribing and stopping pills, between them and my gp.
I also cleared out a couple of black sacks of meds from my daughters home.

Georgesgran Sat 13-Nov-21 15:50:44

After my DH died in March, I too was left with a bag full of meds - most delivered in his final week, unopened and unused, including phials of morphine and several bottles of Oralmorph.
It seemed immoral to hand it all in for distraction.

M0nica Sat 13-Nov-21 15:57:11

None at all - and never have. When we get medication we take it, all of it. DH has monthly prescription drugs and I only have the occasional one off prescription, and I always finish the course.

maddyone Sat 13-Nov-21 16:13:01

One half used prescription medication. My GP gave me the prescription after I returned home from hospital where I was being treated for Covid, and I was still really ill. The GPs were fantastic and prescribed several medicines to help, partly because I came home not yet recovered from Covid (that took about 3/4 months) but I also had a hospital acquired infection. I was able to be treated at home, and I used all the prescribed medications but only about half of one medicine as it was no longer needed after a couple of weeks.

Elizabeth27 Sat 13-Nov-21 16:17:48

None, I order my repeats via the app when I need them.

BlueBelle Sat 13-Nov-21 16:43:33

None at all I don’t have any prescription drugs

Amberone Sat 13-Nov-21 17:32:58

None.

Apart from some antibiotics about seven years ago don't think either of us has ever had prescription drugs. I didn't realise that was uncommon until I had to go to the eye clinic last month and got asked the question not once but three times by the doctor there, who seemed to think I was unable to understand the question. He told me it was rare to meet someone mid-sixties who was not on any medication. I see there are a few others here too (although don't know their ages, sorry - not trying to age anyone ? )

I recently changed to a different drug for blood pressure, I can’t remember what it was called but each week came in a separate box! I wondered why I had been given 8 boxes! What a complete waste of materials.
It didn’t suit me so I arranged different tablets and returned about 5 packets unopened to my pharmacy. It’s the first time ever I’ve done this.
