Hello. Has anyone cut out or reduced omeprazole? Why did you come off or reduce them? How did you feel and how long did it take you? What do you take now for acid reflux.

I’ve been on 20 mg daily omaprazole for acid reflux and a hiatus hernia since mid 2019. The pandemic has meant I’ve continued to get repeat prescriptions and haven’t had a medication review with my GP during this time, however,
I’m thinking I should try to cut them down or cut out altogether as I’m getting all sorts of symptoms which could be side effects of long term use of omeprazole (PPI) use eg nausea and stomach cramps, my IBS is worse, leg cramps and restless legs twitches. I’ve read reports of the long term effects of PPIs and it’s concerning. Ok I know you need to weigh up the benefits of taking ppis against the non benefits.
Look forward to hearing your stories

One really simple tip I got from my GP is not to sleep on my right side. I don’t know if others will be aware of this, but apparently reflux is much more likely if you sleep on the right side.

Yes I have heard this but also heard not sleep on your left hand side as most of your major organs are on the left and they put weight on your heart. Probably an old wives tale.

If I ever do get a break through and get acid reflux I drink a cup of mil, does the trick

If you have Barrett’s Oesophagus, you should not stop, talk to your doctor, see a specialist. I stopped and altered my lifestyle and diet and don’t regret it, but your situation is different.

Itsnell Fri 03-Dec-21 17:22:11

Allsorts. I don’t have Barrett’s oesophagus, as far as I know. How did you come off omaprazole?

This is interesting and a bit concerning. I had no idea of a suggested link to dementia.

I've been on Ezsmeprazole for almost ten years now. Together with being sensible about what I eat, it has been excellent in controlling my symptoms, caused by a large hiatus hernia. I took Ranitidine too until it was discontinued.

I feel between the devil and the deep blue sea on this, as I have dementia in the family sadly, however I don't fancy the problems that can ultimately arrive with acid reflux .. Barrett's oesophagus and the rest if the condition progresses.

I will talk to my GP about it and may try to reduce the dose very gradually.

I have been on lansoprazole For over a year and after reading this thread I stopped taking it about a week ago. I have just started to take apple cider vinegar and also have a stock of rennies to hand. I know stopping suddenly is probably not the right way to do it but there it’s done now…?

Itsnell Wed 08-Dec-21 19:28:26

Hope it goes well Shinamae. I’m cutting down on carbs and any food that’s a trigger for my reflux. I’m taking deglycerised licorice - it licorice with the harmful things taken out, ginger and I’ve bought some probiotics

Let us know how you get on

I also take a shot of probiotic daily, it’s the Actimel mixed fruit one. I did buy the keyfir Because from what I’ve read that is probably better but I thought it tasted disgusting…?

The kefir is nice if you use as a smoothie base with fruit etc

Before coming off it, I highly recommend you speak to the pharmacist. S/he will know - probably better than your GP - how to do so safely, and what alternatives might work better for you

That’s a good idea Lucca as I do make a smoothie every day which is much more fruit than green leaf I can tell you!! But I do think fruit sugar is marginally better for you than added sugars… so I will definitely do that from now on, thank you

I was prescribed OP after developing silent reflux after gallbladder removal. Have been taking it for a few months but my GP has suggested I wean myself off because of the association with bone thinning

F1Grandma2 Sat 11-Dec-21 10:46:31

I’ve been on Omeprazole for about 15 years maybe it’s time I had a chat with my (new) GP! The Dementia issue worries me as my Dad and paternal Grandmother were sufferers. I also have noticed some hair thinning which is also a side effect.

inishowen Sat 11-Dec-21 10:46:32

I weaned myself off Omprozole after being on it for years. I started taking it every other day then every two days until I stopped. If very occasionally I have had a meal that will cause symptoms I will take one. Some nights I take Gaviscon when the heartburn is unbearable.

RosesAreRed21 Sat 11-Dec-21 10:48:09

I have been on them for over 20 years and have never been asked in for a review - if I go a day without taking one the reflux is awful ? but they did tests and said I have GERD

Shinamae Sat 11-Dec-21 10:53:15

I actually managed to speak to my doctor yesterday about coming off this medication and he has prescribed me something else, not sure of the name of it but will come back on thread when I get it and see if anybody has an opinion on it I did say I would rather have medication with no“ozole” in it ??

Albangirl14 Sat 11-Dec-21 10:56:11

I was prescribed this drug to protect my stomach from the effects of a strong pain killer but as soon as I could manage on paracetamol or ibruprofin I came off Omprazole as it upset my stomach and bowels. I would not want to have to take it again. If you phone your GP you should at least get a telephone consultation.

This is all very interesting. I’m now on lanzopraxole, having been on omeprazole, I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia after an endoscopy 5 years ago. I’m concerned about long term effects of these drugs but worried about coming off them. I have a constant cough with the acid coming up. My husband died from oesophageal cancer this year. I’m going for another endoscopy as I’m so worried about it and hoping to talk to a knowledgeable consultant re pros and cons of meds and other options..

I was prescribed this but read about it and thought the damage (in the long term) was not something I wanted. SO, Googled like mad. Firstly - listen to body. If discomfort happening stop eating. Make sure diet suits you and you're having enough liquid. Posture! Think 'dancer', nice long front. And then I take 5gm (teaspoon) of L Glutamine each morning. It is an amino acid that the gut lining needs a lot of. Helps me. If you try it and find it good - buy a big tub of the powder - much cheaper. www.naturesbest.co.uk/your-goals/build-power-strength/glutamine-powder/

HannahLoisLuke Sat 11-Dec-21 11:07:59

I’ve been taking 20mg a day if Omeprazole since being diagnosed with silent reflux in 2018. Then in 2019 I got Polymyalgia Rheumatica and was prescribed steroids. If I hadn’t already been on Omaprozole my GP would have prescribed it to protect my stomach and bones which can be damaged by the steroids, just a couple if the side effects if taking those!
I’ve been tapering the steroids but had a relapse so had to start again. I’m now down to 7mg and wondering if I can reduce the Omeprazole. I tried missing a capsule a couple if days ago and the heartburn came back. I do also take ACV as a capsule and also make my own kefir, when I can be bothered. Also a probiotic about twice a week.
I am having a telephone review with the practice pharmacist on Dec 14th so I’m going to thrash it out with her. I’m fed up with having to take these drugs.

Moggycuddler Sat 11-Dec-21 11:10:44

I take ranitidine instead. It works with less side effects. I had awful reflux but now very rarely. You could try ginger tea too. It helps. And the old faithful gaviscon at night, as long as it's 2 hours away from any other medications, as it affects the absorption.

Candelle Sat 11-Dec-21 11:13:21

I have been prescribed Omeprazole for ten or more years but just this week switched to Lanoprazole as I have developed another condition (the treatment for which is a two-year course!).

I have read about a possible link between dementia and this group of drugs and will raise it with the next doctor I see, as obviously that's something we can do without!

If I can then add anything useful, I will put it here or as a new thread.

pascal30 Sat 11-Dec-21 11:13:44

I was on Omeprazol for 10 years and feeling extreme exhaustion and restless legs, so with the agreement of my GP I stopped taking it. I use kefir and don't eat bread now, I also don't eat after 6pm. That has dramatically reduced acid reflux and increased energy levels.

I am also worried about the long term effects of Omeprazole.
I have taken it for years after being diagnosed with Barretts Esophagus.
I don't know whether to try and stop taking it. The doctor seems to think its OK. I am extremely concerned though.

My son has BA and if he misses one lanzaprazole is awake with very bad reflux.
