I have had a really bad infection which started exactly a week ago. Never had it before. Luckily my GP was great and I am now pain free. But I haven’t eaten anything solid, except scrambled eggs for a week. I drink a lot and am really exhausted. Can anyone tell me how long this lasts? I have Christmas to prepare for and DH has been really marvellous looking after me. I don’t want him to do that as well

Can I recommend dMannose that I get from a company called sweet cures. A few years ago I kept getting cystitis and it really helped. It turned out that it was being caused by vaginal atrophy which I’d been suffering from for ages without realising it. I always keep some dMannose to hand these days although, thankfully I don’t get cystitis now. Someone’s else I know says dMannose has been a life changer for her. Cystitis is horrible, isn’t it.

GP gave me MacroBID which did the trick quickly. But this morning I could not even wash my hair. It is so debilitating. But Thank you MayBee I might get some of that in case

Trimethoprim works best for me.

You poor thing - it is so miserable. Do you still have symptoms or is it settling?

The pain has gone, thank you, but I am very weak and wobbly and I sleep a lot

Cystitis is very unpleasant. I had a few infections , and always wanted wanted to wee! Each step I took felt like something bouncing on a full bladder. Really difficult during the night , regardless of bed time or how much fluid I took I was up on the dot every two hours to visit the bathroom, exhausting! As for car journeys it was a nightmare constantly needing a service station . Eventually my GP prescribed vagifem , a vaginal tablet now used twice a week. What an amazing change , I now have what I describe as a normal bladder. If on a long journey and I need the loo I can manage in a normal way ie , I need to go but it's not so urgent!! It has transformed my life !!

I was like that with the atrophy. Was always needing the loo and car journeys were a nightmare. I think, because it got worse over time it became normalised.

I had cystitis on and off for the whole of my sexually active life it is the most debilitating problem and I once remember sleeping on the bathroom floor

And take cranberry tablets too!

tickingbird Wed 15-Dec-21 09:10:17

Snap! I’ve had it for almost 2 weeks and feel awful. I’m now on Macrobid.

When I was young I used to get it and bleed with it. It’s the most awful complaint and I despair when I feel it coming on. I’ll definitely look up dMannose.

I’ve had it several times over the years, though only once was bad enough to need a visit to the GP and antibiotics, and that could have been because we were abroad at the time and despite asking at pharmacies, I was unable to get the Cystitis Relief sachets (which you can buy in UK supermarkets) for several days.

I invariably keep a pack of those in the house now, and always take some away with me, in case.

On other occasions when I’ve had it, I’ve found that those sachets relieve the symptoms very quickly. As I understand it, whatever is in the drinks you take 3 times a day for 2 days, alters the acidity or otherwise of the urine, which not only relieves the burning/urgency, but also makes the urinary tract considerably less bacteria-friendly.

Aww I know cystitis is absolutely horrible. I hope you get well soon. I know the feeling. Least you got an appointment with the GP. I spoke to an online doctor and got given Macrobid and canes oasis.
It tends to work for me, as its an ongoing thing. Hope it works for you too

Oldbat1 Wed 15-Dec-21 09:55:18

Really feel for you. I’ve had it many times but never as bad as you describe. Strong antibiotics does the trick for me and my last episode was probably two years ago.

BBbevan Wed 15-Dec-21 10:12:39

tickingbird I hope you are a little better. What a b***er this is. It has hit me for six.
I hope you are completely well by Christmas so you can toast everyone in cranberry juice. ????

PinkCosmos Wed 15-Dec-21 10:21:00

I agree with the other posters about this being linked to vaginal atrophy.

I have been using Replens for vaginal atrophy. You can buy it online, over the counter or you can get it on prescription (in the UK).

It definitely makes a difference and is hormone free. You need to use it regularly, not just when you have symptoms.

Hope you feel better soon

MayBee70 Wed 15-Dec-21 12:57:35

I always keep some urine test strips in my medicine cupboard as they won’t give you antibiotics unless you have an infection. I also ask for spare urine sample bottles from the surgery so I can take one in for testing. But, from past experience, my doctors treated the cystitis but didn’t look for the reason for it happening so frequently.

tickingbird Wed 15-Dec-21 13:14:06

BBbevan. Thank you. Let’s hope we’re all well for Christmas and can at least have a vodka with our cranberry juice!

Marmite32 Wed 15-Dec-21 17:30:22

BBbevan the antibiotics for cystisis used to make me feel sick. I think it was one of the recognised side effects.
Thank goodness I'm another one who now uses vagifem regularly to keep the infection at bay.

BBbevan Wed 15-Dec-21 19:08:39

Do you get Vagifem on prescription or can you get it on line.? I’m going to cover all bases when I am well. I’m not going through this again.

And take cranberry tablets too!

Sadly these are now not thought to do any good . I took them for years.

tickingbird Thu 16-Dec-21 09:01:37

I bought some Replens several years ago but couldn’t carry on with it as it caused the most awful cottage cheesey type clumps in my underwear. According to the enclosed leaflet this happens with some users and is harmless but I couldn’t tolerate it.

MayBee70 Thu 16-Dec-21 13:56:16

It didn’t happen with me thankfully but I know there are warnings about it! I never seem to react to anything. I wish I did sometimes as it would show that the medication or vaccine etc is actually doing something!

BBbevan Thu 16-Dec-21 14:34:24

Are you better todaytickingbird ? I have been on a short walk around our hamlet , with DH, to deliver our Christmas cards. It was nice to be out but I slept for two hours when I got back. Still a step in the right direction.
