I tripped up yesterday at my DD's and have broken a bone in my foot - the same foot in which I broke 2 bones about 7 years ago. I have a boot and a frame; and crutches for upstairs.
I have been on two sticks for three weeks anyway because of right hip replacement problem and acute sciatica - I had been given a pain relief patch for all of that and thankfully it has meant the broken foot is less painful than it could have been.
Such a shame after a lovely Christmas with family.

Drench, sorry. Don’t know where French came from. ?
Thanks Aveline - I have found them and ordered them.
Luckygirl I got the Drench wipes from Amazon after Katek recommended them to me after her hip op. You can put the packet on the radiator to warm them up a bit. I had my op in midsummer so actually liked them cool and refreshing. They're a decent size too. There's also 'no wash' shampoo hats you can get for hair washing. I didn't try them but others recommended them. Good luck.
You are all struggling on and I admire you for it. I think your husband owes you one big favour for doing the driving and letting him drink. Think bouquet of ? at least!
Teacheranne isn’t it surprising how a thumb is central to many things we do with our hands and if it’s out of action it just gets in the way?
I hope it heals well.
Luckygirl I hope you find a way to shower comfortably - and the French wipes suggested sound the way to go for now. It makes us feel better to be ‘freshened up’ doesn’t it?
And the end of the thumb is supersensitive - lots of nerve endings. You are being a very brave bear!
My thumb is healing slowly, the district nurse replaced the dressing and told me off for getting it wet! She gave me a plastic protector thing to wear.
I’ve got an appointment with a plastic surgeon on the 4th Jan to see if some remedial work is necessary, the nurse does not think so and I hope she is right. As long as the wound heals, I don’t mind having a wrinkled end to my thumb, I just want to be able to use it. I had no idea how much we use our thumbs in our daily lives!
Ouch Josianne - that sounds very painful!
Thanks for the Drench tip Aveline - I will google it.
Thank you Tilly. 8 days later and my gash is finally knitting. It is right along that line in the palm so it kept opening up and bleeding when I opened my hand. The worst bit was not being able to drive properly over Christmas. My husband wanted to drink when we went to DD's each day, so I drove home shouting from the driver's seat frequently when to change the gear stick because I couldn't apply pressure! Impossible to peel vegetables too, so I get out of that job!
I hope all other mishappers are developing coping strategies. It would be comical if it weren't so painful, and sometimes long lasting.
Oh Luckygirl sorry to hear that. No need to stink though. I found 'Drench' wipes excellent after my hip replacement. Nice and clean and fresh smelling without the stress of managing in the shower.
Thanks for asking Tilly. Things are little changed just now, but I guess time is what is needed - and the older you get the less you have of it! Had a shower this morning - now that is a right palaver with pain in left foot and sciatica on right side. It involves two stools and a lot of ingenuity and took ages - I will just have to stink!
Best to other Christmas mishap victims!
Just wondering if Luckygirl , Teacheranne and Josieann are feeling better today after their painful Christmases?
?
Moan away - it sounds very painful. I do not have a monopoly on Christmas mishaps!
I think I'd better add my apologies to this thread, because I honestly thought it was one of those "share your Christmas mishaps" posts. Sorry to have added my slashed palm moan right at the beginning. I hope your pain lessens Luckygirl.
GrannySomerset - thank you for your kind words; and I am sorry to hear that your back is giving you trouble. It is so debilitating I know and drags you down, as even simple things need thought and cause pain.
I know my own grandma had a spontaneous osteoporotic fracture and in fact decided to stop eating and drinking with the result that she died - she could simply not face the future.
I have some understanding now of why she did this!!
My warmest sympathies, Luckygirl. You really don’t need this and it is depressing to say the least when you have done so much to get your life together over the past year. I do hope the pain eases a bit because it is so hard to think straight when you hurt. I won’t add my back to the mix because this is your legitimate moan, but I do have some inkling of how you feel and hope things get better quickly.
I would honestly take whatever treatments are on offer. You do not know whether your mother's treatments worked to a degree, and even just some protection from breaking bones and crumbling spine has to be a good thing.
Honestly I am so upset that my osteoporosis has jumped up to bite me so badly and I expect that this will be the pattern of the rest of my life. It is not a great prospect, and you do not want to finish up in my situation. If there is treatment out there for you then I would snap it up if I were you - the situation in which I find myself is not a good one and I would not wish it on anyone else. The pain is eye-watering and the future looks bleak as far as I am concerned.
I'm coeliac like my mum was, and have osteoporosis like she did. She took Fosamax (or similar) for years but during the last 20 months of her life it was discovered that the reason for her terrible back pain was crumbling vertebra. I took medication for a few years then came off it because if it hadn't worked for her, I had no expectations it would work for me. Perhaps it doesn't work for coeliacs? No one could tell me... but I'm hoping to stay well without it. I hope that all of you have a happy and healthy new year!
Let us know how you get on with the nurse Teacheranne. Hopefully it's rather like when you take a plaster off your finger, the skin has gone white but soon recovers.
Teacheranne
I removed the bandage on my thumb tonight as it got wet in the shower - I wish I hadn’t! The stitches look fine, but the skin around them is white and very soft. I left the bandage off for a while to let the air get at my skin then bandaged it up again. I’ve got an appointment with the district nurse tomorrow so I’ll see what she says, the white skin looks rather nasty but it might be fine. At least it is not as painful but it’s surprising how much I need to use my thumb!
I have dupuytrans in my hands, thankfully it hasn’t progressed (touch wood). But some people have to have their little fingers removed and it seems you need your little finger more than other fingers, apart from the thumb that is. I’ve lost track of how man times I’ve sliced into my index finger: worst time was when I sliced it open when reaching up for a coat hanger. I worked at an airport one year preparing food for in flight catering, and I sliced into my index finger when cutting up some lettuce. They were so furious with me because I ruined a whole sink full of lettuce: no sympathy for the state of my poor finger….
You were very daring to take the bandage off! - some things are better not looked at!!
I am struggling this morning with the pain and also my dicky ticker has decided to go haywire at this moment. Never rains and all that .......
Wishing you both a speedy recovery. ?

Oh no. I’m so sorry to hear this. And there was me feeling sorry for myself because I sliced my finger on the plastic the mince pies were in ( serves me right for eating mince pies from a plastic container but I didn’t actually buy them myself).
Get well soon, Lucky. You are certainly having a rough time. Let's hope that the New Year brings better luck to you.
When I had my hip replacement, several years ago, I picked up 2 x 3 wheeled trollies and also a tray trolley on wheels - all from my local Charity shop. The tray trolley was great for carrying things through from the kitchen. I kept one 3- Wheeler upstairs, for going to the loo in the night. The other helped me to get about, inside and out. They were all a great help.
Now that I don't need them they have been loaned out, numerous times, to various friends.
