Saw my mum last weekend and she said something strange. That she felt that mentally she would be unable to run if needed. Has anyone else experienced this, either parents or self?

I agree it’s a strange thing to say. Not often 80-yr-olds are required to run? Could upset the balance?

I am 90, and have sometimes thought not only can I physically not run but I wonder if I have forgotten how to do it.

Was she worrying about needing to get out of the house in case of fire or something?

I'm 86 and like Caleo my mind often jumps a few stages.
ie I think one thing then speak the conclusion of a few stages ahead.
If you know what I mean.

Maybe this is it. She used to be a runner in her youth.

80 is not that old, honest. So just depends if she has said and done other 'strange' things lately?

My sister in law had been diagnosed with Alzheimers quite a long time before she one day, just could not put on foot in front of the other, as she had forgotten what to do. NOT saying that this is the case with your mum at all, but your post reminded me of this. (she was 84).

I wondered if I could still swim when I hadn't tried for some time, but once I was in the water I was fine (I am 84). I think I could still run if necessary.

Snap! I did it yesterday and my long suffering son said " What has that to do with---?" That was my cue to detail the mysterious connections I had made.

I will only run if I’m being chased

I'm 82 this year and most likely if I had to run for whatever reason, I would grin
Fortunately I don't need any walking aid---stick or frame and am pretty upright so that's a headstart.
Always had a good grip on terra-firma too !
