Hip replacement pre/post operation pls

Cutting a long story short I have (at last!!) been given a date for a new hip. It will be my first proper operation so feel relieved and happy but nervous ?, All I was told at the hospital was it would be a 48 hour stay.

I don’t know anyone who has had this done and wonder if anyone with experience has suggestions or advice about what they found helpful either before or after the operation or useful aids, or anything about the whole process.
Thanks ?

GrannyLaine we have seen the xrays and there is no bone to be seen, they have totally shattered. He is in so much pain and is not very mobile.

Evening all !! I have been very busy today , consultant visit at 7.30 am !! physios twice today with a walking frame to the loo (thank goodness no more bed pans!) and then walking in the corridor .Blood tests and X-ray of the hip. Then learnt how to give my blood thinning injection into my well covered abdomen! I was given regular pain killers plus laxatives without asking and can now get out of bed on my own to go to the loo .Pain is more than yesterday but I’m doing more. Blood pressure had been very low due to the spinal injection so no blood pressure tablets yet . Off to sleep now I hope! Will be thinking of you silverlining tomorrow - keep us in the loop and remember it’s only up from now x

FindingNemo does your husband have osteoporosis? I wondered when you mentioned that his bones shattered.
Naughtyneine good luck for Thursday. The stairs situation in your house sound quite challenging for you especially to start with. Do you have a downstairs cloakroom? I am wondering how you will cope being on your own all day while you are on two crutches with no spare hand to carry anything like a hot drink and your lunch.
I guess you have thought all that out though.
All the best for tomorrow silverlining and I hope you are doing ok Susie

JenniferEccles. Osteoporosis has never been mentioned. DH was medically retired with osteoarthritis.

Wishing you lots of luck today Silverlining.....and great to hear Susie you are doing well. I think I'm probably woefully under prepared re equipment but I'll just wing it. I'm lucky in that I have a new partner off 3 years...(after a mostly unhappy 38 years of marriage)....he is younger than me...yay. I have made my friends and him laugh by saying I wonder how many 67 year old ditsy blondes they get asking how soon can you have sex post op. Lol.

FannyCornforth Wed 13-Apr-22 11:33:58

Greetings hipsters, thanks fir thinking of me GrannyLaine.
I an being discharged tomorrow morning , still in a lot of pain, and been sick today so not up to writing much but will do so in a day or so.
Happily I didn’t see or hear the operation and was told it went well.
More detail to follow. Night all x

GrannyLaine Thu 14-Apr-22 21:47:52

Hope you manage to have a good night silverlining and that they soon have that pain under control. I'm glad all went well during the surgery but sorry to hear you've had a grim day today cupcake

Luckygirl3 Thu 14-Apr-22 22:12:43

Sorry you are feeling a bit grotty - hopefully you can go home tomorrow - everything feels better when you are on home turf.

travelsafar Fri 15-Apr-22 06:04:22

Silverlinings hope you feel better today and all goes well with your discharge and that once home you can manage any pain you are having.[flowers

FannyCornforth Fri 15-Apr-22 06:13:08

Oh no, hope that you are feeling much, much better today. x

JenniferEccles Fri 15-Apr-22 09:41:06

Sorry to hear about the sickness silverlining. It is not unusual after anaesthesia, but unpleasant for you. The main thing though is that the operation is over so recovery has begun!

JenniferEccles Fri 15-Apr-22 09:50:34

I hope things are going well for you Susie now you are home and that your operation went well too nautyneine

Aveline Fri 15-Apr-22 10:38:39

The meds made me very sick too. Just say to yourself 'this too shall pass' and it will. This time next week you'll be feeling much better.

Juliet27 Fri 15-Apr-22 10:42:59

Wondering whether you had oramorph. It certainly made me feel sick and I turned down a second offering. Doesn’t seem to suit everyone. You’ll soon be over the worst.

JenniferEccles Fri 15-Apr-22 10:45:01

Sorry for the mis-spelling of your name naughtyneine!

Whiff Fri 15-Apr-22 13:36:55

Silverlining you will be in pain . But it will pass . Doing the exercises will be painful but once healed you will be pain free. Once you are home you will feel better in yourself. Nothing like having your own things around you and to be honest I never slept well in hospital and couldn't wait to get home. Bet you are the same. Have a lovely Easter. You will soon be dancing a jig. ?

Hello hipsters - sorry I have been “off line “ for a couple of days . I had a really awful time Wednesday ,high temperature and felt very unwell . So bloods taken, antibiotics started for a maybe recurring urine infection and a drip backup as dehydrated . Physio had discharged me Wednesday am as fit to leave Thursday but it was not to be. But 24hrs of intravenous antibiotics and lots of fluids and I was OK to leave yesterday . So unfortunately not as mobile as hoped - very stiff . I was prescribed codeine but have to halve the dose since home to remain “with it” .I managed to get to the loo on my own last night , my sister was surprised I didn’t call her . Sis has had to go home to Norfolk today butI have people about and son sleeping here tonight . Crutches are taking a bit of time to manipulate and a friend brought a spare round so no need to carry one upstairs in the same hand as the other crutch. My hands are small and arthritic which was tricky !
Carer arrived to put my compression stockings on . Very nice person , but has a 15 mins slot ! She can rinse and dry my legs but can’t put on soaps or creams !! So I have to use my grabber thing to put soap on a flannel - she can rinse and dry and then I can rub cream in with a tissue on a grabber . I don’t think I can shower in 10 mins at present so will just make do with top and tail until clips out . Actually think I’m happier anyway keeping the wound site dry . I think I’m getting there ?

SusieB50 the 'Drench' wipes were a godsend for me. Katek recommended them and I found I could feel really clean after using them. PS this isn't an advert!
