Hip replacement pre/post operation pls

Cutting a long story short I have (at last!!) been given a date for a new hip. It will be my first proper operation so feel relieved and happy but nervous ?, All I was told at the hospital was it would be a 48 hour stay.

I don’t know anyone who has had this done and wonder if anyone with experience has suggestions or advice about what they found helpful either before or after the operation or useful aids, or anything about the whole process.
Thanks ?

Good to hear from you iPadGrandma: it all sounds a bit exhausting at your end! I'm inclined to agree with Silverlining about the exercise thing. Four times a day ?? Blimey....

I had a telephone followup with the surgeon on Thursday (6 weeks) first and last contact with anyone since leaving hospital.

I can now swim and walk as far as I like, but have to follow hip precautions for another 6 weeks. A little bit disappointed, and it wasn’t explained how I’m supposed to get dressed at the pool, or put my hiking boots on.

There didn’t seem to be much expectation that I would do the post-6 week exercises in my handout, and in truth it’s unlikely I will as I’m now far too tired from resuming normal life.

Hello activerelaxer. My 6 week check was also on Thursday but in person and apart from 2x physio was also the first contact since my operation. I had another xray and he wants me to keep to the precautions fir next 6 weeks when he wants to see me again, and need another X ray to check its still in place.
Isnt it strange how it differs so much. Its still really awkward with socks and doing up shoes etc and know I am lucky as am not on my own.
Heres to the next 6 weeks, onwards we go.

Really strange how things differ , I too have to keep to the no bending and 90 degree rule but for a further 8 weeks . So difficult on one’s own . I can’t swim until the last scab on the scar has gone hopefully in a couple of weeks . I’ve then decided to abandon wearing my socks when I go and I’ll take my long shoehorn and one of my grabbers which fold up . Hopefully I will be able to get my knickers and trousers on ! There is a disabled cubicle there but it’s usually used by a man who has had a stroke with his private physio.
I managed the very crowded train successfully today with my DD, she had a job here in London so I met her afterwards and travelled back to Norfolk with her and I’m staying in a Airbnb very near them for a few days . But realised that I won’t be able to shower as it’s over a deep sided bath ! Never mind a strip wash it will have to be - feet maybe a problem, though I do have some wash wipes and can probably manoeuvre them with my grabber ?

I tried out my fit flops today because I decided to go without socks. All was fine on carpet until I went into the kitchen which has a tiled floor and went flying, threw my cup of tea all over the place and how I didn’t do myself an injury I dont know.. Apparently falling is the enemy of new hips so a lucky escape.
The soles of the fit flops were lethal. Really slippery and very dangerous.Only mentioning to warn others.
Greetings and wishing all a good night ?

Enjoy Norfolk Susie we are going fit a few days next week. Nice and flat!

Silverlining48...I have been wearing Birkenstock type toe post sandals for the last 2 weeks ( weather permitting). They have a much better sole and grip. I got mine from Deichman. They come in a variety of colours too and at the moment they are half price (I bought 3 more pairs last week). They are easy to get on and you don't need to bend. I wouldn't recommend them on very uneven ground obviously but for everyday I find they work fine.

silverlining48 Sun 29-May-22 09:10:17

Thanks Will check them out. Like the sound of half price!

Oh no silverlining - it’s my biggest dread . My sister in law fell in her garden a few weeks after a knee replacement but fortunately didn’t do any harm either.
I tend to walk barefoot in the house or slippers with backs in and a nonslip sole . Outside I’m still in my trainers with elastic laces . I have some sandals with straps but of course can’t reach them . Think I may get some white trainers that were mentioned on another thread . Not sure I would feel safe enough in my Birkey’s yet .
Off now back to the family and my very lively 6 year old DGS birthday party - at least I have a bolt hole ! My 10 year old DGD may well join me !!

I'm puzzled about your FitFlops Silverlining: I have a couple of pairs, one ballet flats and one Barra sandals which I love. I don't find the soles slippy at all and my balance isn't the best ?
What kind are yours?

silverlining48 Sun 29-May-22 10:59:21

I bought the fit flops about 8 years ago, they cost £55 way over my budget. The soles are so shiny now with no grip.
Will try to post a photo but not sure how.

Hello again hipsters! ?
I do hope everyone is well.

I’m just catching up with everything on here.

Silverlining well done for minimising your fall, that must have been really scary.

IpadGrandma lovely to hear from you; apologies that I haven’t replied to your pm yet.
I’m interested in what your ‘Rehab’ information included? Your pre op program seems incredibly thorough.

Like everyone is saying on here; it’s remarkable how different everyone’s circumstances and procedures are.

Regarding furniture: I had my pre op yesterday and all that was said about that, was did I have ‘a suitable chair’!

I actually really enjoyed the appointment! The nurses were absolutely lovely. The fact that the appointment was such a treat is testament to how much I have missed female company.
And as the awful cliche goes ‘need to get out more’.

So, this is what happened:

I saw two nurses and a physio.
I had an ECG (never had one before); I was measured and weighed (14.5 stones ?but actually less than I expected); bloods taken; wee given; questionnaires completed; Hibiscrub and reading matter provided - including pre op exercises to be done in bed; and of course - the totem of all Hipsters - ? The Raised Toilet Seat! ?

They said that I sounded very well prepared, and should be absolutely fine.

But (and it’s a big one)
I have also been told to stop the HRT, but I’m not entirely sure about that, as everything online and a HCP on here says that the patches are fine to continue with.
I sincerely hope so, as I had a horrible sweaty day yesterday.
I do get incredibly hot ?

FannyCornforth Sun 29-May-22 11:05:00

My pre op wasn’t yesterday, of course, it was Friday

silverlining48 Sun 29-May-22 11:05:58

Had a go with a photo

silverlining48 Sun 29-May-22 11:12:53

Will need tech department (dh) to give it a try.
Glad all
Went well with the pre op Fanny, I see every doc or hospital appointment as an outing and put a bit of mascara and lipstick on. Silly I know.

silverlining48 Sun 29-May-22 11:15:54

Having said that we use it as a opportunity to have lunch out.

silverlining48 Sun 29-May-22 11:16:34

Do You have a date Fanny?

FannyCornforth Sun 29-May-22 11:19:49

Hi Silver, yes, it’s Friday 17th June smile

silverlining48 Sun 29-May-22 11:27:12

Good news an die at least you can make plans.

silverlining48 Sun 29-May-22 11:27:50

and at least ...typo

silverlining48 Sun 29-May-22 11:29:40

I am puzzled by my fit flops too GrannyLaine. Soles are not damaged in any way, just very shiny and slippery.

GrannyLaine Sun 29-May-22 11:34:44

silverlining don't worry about a photo: if they are 8 years old you likely need to replace them! I thought you were talking about newish ones!

I had a daft moment the other day. My 3 year old granddaughter was visiting and was showing me how she could hop on one leg.

DGD "Can you hop Granny?"

Me "I haven't tried for a while, let me see...."

Did two hops (on my new hip side?) then Whoa!! what on earth am I thinking!! No ill effects fortunately but just illustrates how much I forget about it these days.

FannyCornforth Sun 29-May-22 11:50:24

? wow! That’s amazing Laine!
I’m getting really excited now

silverlining48 Sun 29-May-22 11:50:54

Replace? shock? They are not worn or tatty, other than the sole which looks fine, but isn’t, they look like new. I have shoes much older which cost a lot less than that, which are still going strong.

Relieved you got away with hopping....it gets easier to forget doesn’t it but best not repeat.

silverlining48 Sun 29-May-22 11:57:38

I just had a go on my non op leg and couldn’t manage even one small hop, well done. smile
