Hip replacement pre/post operation pls

(1001 Posts)

Cutting a long story short I have (at last!!) been given a date for a new hip. It will be my first proper operation so feel relieved and happy but nervous ?, All I was told at the hospital was it would be a 48 hour stay.

I don’t know anyone who has had this done and wonder if anyone with experience has suggestions or advice about what they found helpful either before or after the operation or useful aids, or anything about the whole process.
Thanks ?

A sprint Silverlining!? Wow!
It’s actually tomorrow!

silverlining48 Thu 16-Jun-22 08:48:58

It was an actual sprint, I couldn’t believe it myself (think I was showing off ) but she was struggling so much I wanted to give her some hope.
There is hope, it has made a massive difference.
Habe just read my initial post 4 months ago, when I was seeking advice and now we aren’t far from 1000 posts. I think it has helped many of us and think it inspired that woman at the theatre.
Hope all goes well for tomorrow and look forward to hearing
about it afterwards,
Good luck

What does the bump message mean?

Eskay10 Thu 16-Jun-22 12:49:54

Seems I’m not alone here. Just had my hip replacement this weekend. What a relief to get that done. Up walking with sticks and doing stairs really well. So grateful to the surgeon and all medical staff for getting me thus far. More than ready to get going again. We are so lucky that these operations are possible and successful.

FannyCornforth Thu 16-Jun-22 13:07:49

Hello Eskay, and congratulations on your op! smile

What does the bump message mean?

Trying to ‘bump’ the thread up the Active List.
For some reason, the thread keeps disappearing- which means that others can’t see it

Hello Eskay glad you are feeling ok after your hip op. That’s good news.
Welcome to our group of hipsters, with pages of advice and help if required.
You might have read I foolishly Sprinted up a dozen stairs 8 weeks post op. Luckily I didn’t miss one and ruin all the hard work.
Feel free to post your progress. It will helps others.

Silverlining It has not been a good day for progress with my hip replacement surgery.

Following my voicemail from Surgical Rehab yesterday, asking if I had a date for surgery, I phoned them but was only able to leave a message. I did not say I hadn’t had one yet, I just asked them to please phone me again. Nothing. Left the same message again this morning, still nothing. As I said yesterday, I would have thought the hospital might know whether I had actually received a date,

At midday I had a phone call from Booked Admissions. This sounded promising, or so I thought. They had been forwarded the email which I had sent to my surgeons’s secretary yesterday, with a couple of questions.

The person in Booked Admissions said ‘there is a backlog’, I said I fully appreciated that. I was told ‘it won’t be June or July’.
I remember also being told ‘not soon’.
When the surgeon rang in April he had mentioned early June.

I explained to this person that I had had two lots of pre admission tests done, the last ones last Thursday. I had been contacted and told the ones done in February had expired and they needed to repeat them. In February the nurse said about 12 weeks until surgery.

I was told by the person in Booked Admissions I should never have been told that!

I was told they do pre admission tests well in advance of any surgery to make sure patients are ready in case there is a cancellation and they will be ready. Apparently the tests are no indication that surgery will be any time soon.

It is a pity that nobody ever told me that.

Right now I am feeling very upset and don’t know what to think. I did think I was getting near to a date. Sorry to ramble a bit, it helps to write it down and share it with you all.

FannyCornforth Best wishes for tomorrow’s surgery..

GrannyLaine Thu 16-Jun-22 20:42:29

iPadGrandma not a good day for you at all, I can only begin to imagine how fed up you are. The lack of communication at your hospital is truly shocking and I can tell you that most complaints to the NHS have their roots in precisely that - poor communication. Please do consider asking the PALS department for support, message them outlining factually what has happened and what you are wanting to happen. Perhaps also consult your GP practice to see if they can help. They can't make waiting lists disappear but you are being pushed from pillar to post and that's just not on. Sending flowers

SusieB50 Thu 16-Jun-22 21:55:15

Good Luck Fanny for tomorrow .
ipadGrandma!what a palaver you are having . I agree get hold of PALS and your GP . My friend who had had three cancellations has got a date 14th July . He is so relieved and is putting himself into isolation , just meeting outside 2 metres apart !

JenniferEccles Thu 16-Jun-22 22:47:47

All the best for tomorrow Fanny
You will soon join the ‘new hip’ group on here, won’t you?!

I am now nearly six months past my operation. We are currently on holiday in Cornwall enjoying wonderful weather.
I’ve done quite a lot of walking each day which has been so encouraging. I’ve done cliff rambles with a husband who sets a cracking pace, seafront walks and wandered around some beautiful National Trust gardens down here.
Seven months ago I couldn’t have done all that but thanks to the wonderfully successful replacement operation I am (almost) a new woman !

FannyCornforth Fri 17-Jun-22 05:40:51

Oh bad luck ipadgrandma, what a palaver. I hope that you get some much better news soon thanks

Thank you Susie and Jennifer.
Yep. Today’s the day.
I’m guzzling water like a good ‘un, I can’t drink any more water after 10.30 ?
Thank you for everything, especially SilverLining for starting the thread.
I shall see you all later! ?x

Hi Eskay10, so glad all is going well for you. Keep us updated with your progress. I too feel a huge debt of gratitude to the guy who has given me my life back with this surgery.

silverlining48 Sat 18-Jun-22 10:11:11

Hello Eskay welcome. I responded the other day but can’t find it, so writing again to say hope you are ok, as you begin the journey. You are week 1 level now, so early days, but a good start from the sound of it. Well done.
Lots if information advice and support from kindly persons on here so don’t hesitate if you have a question.

silverlining48 Sat 18-Jun-22 10:12:31

Fanny hope your went ok yesterday. Day 1 isn’t easy so rest up now and get back to us when you feel up to it.

silverlining48 Sat 18-Jun-22 13:29:34

Have just been reading the few notes i wrote post op and I had almost forgotten how dreadful fir at least the first week, so if I have given the impression its a walk in the park, it wasnt fur me, but yes i had forgotten.

JenniferEccles Sat 18-Jun-22 13:42:18

I agree silverlining48 !
In fact I remember thinking “what on earth have I done ?” for a while after the operation as, although I was certainly in pain before, I was lucky enough to not have had too long a wait for surgery, so the pain I was in beforehand wasn’t as bad as for those poor folk who have to wait a year or more.

I do think more needs to be said about the post-operative pain, whilst stressing of course that it most definitely does gradually get better.

Despite what I thought in the immediate aftermath, I am absolutely delighted to now be completely pain free.

Hope all went well with you FannyCornforth and I’m sure you will post once you feel up to it.

silverlining48 Sat 18-Jun-22 13:50:01

Jennifer When I started the thread in Feb you responded and were 8 weeks post op, and pretty happy, which is the same as I am now.
Its major surgery so must not forget it will require time fir recovery, but after a couple of weeks I started to feel so much better. Slowly and surely, with no regrets, not one.

JenniferEccles Sat 18-Jun-22 14:48:02

That’s interesting silverlining.
I hadn’t realised it was that long ago. It seems to have gone so quickly.
Your thread has certainly proved popular hasn’t it? It’s so interesting to read about other’s experiences, which can vary apart from the fact that not one person has said they regret getting it done. That must be very reassuring for those reading who have yet to have their operation.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 18-Jun-22 15:34:27

Thinking of you FannyCornforth

SusieB50 Sat 18-Jun-22 17:28:33

I’ve tied to post several times but it keeps disappearing, nearly ten weeks and despite a few set backs , no regrets at all . I agree about the pain though , I think because you are home in 3-4 days , it is almost forgotten that it is very major surgery. I would be more prepared mentally I think if the other hip needs replacing. I would certainly arrange to have someone stay longer to help. If I was going to advise re the pain , take everything offered along with good constipation relief . I hate taking codeine and tried taking less than suggested. Next time I’ll go with the flow and be happily away with the fairies !

Aveline Sat 18-Jun-22 17:53:27

Unfortunately I couldn't make it to a trip away with the fairies. The meds made me so sick and faint. However, I don't remember pain being a massive factor. My biggest worry in the days a weeks after the op was that I might move awkwardly and somehow open up the scar. This was exacerbated when trying to slide in or out of bed. But it passed! All is A1 now. I'm sure you'll all be fine too after a while. It's so worth it! sunshine

silverlining48 Sat 18-Jun-22 19:11:33

Oh my goodness just checked and you are right Susie it’s nearly 10 weeks and there’s me thinking it’s 8.
Glad you are doing ok. Are you Swimming!? I went into the cold sea yesterday and after a short initial shock it was lovely .
Couldn’t be more different today though.

silverlining48 Sat 18-Jun-22 19:13:18

Aveline I only had glue holding me together so still resisting bending down just it case it goes pop
