Headache and coughed up blood

About 3 years had a hacking cough that lasted 6 months. I had an X-ray which showed nothing. Then one day I had a really bad coughing fit and brought up a lot of bright red blood which was really frightening as I was on a train at the time. I brought up smaller amounts for the next few days. The GP sent me for a CT scan which showed ‘something’ followed by a camera into my lungs. The consultant said I have bronchiectasis and said if I get a chest infection in the future I should have a longer dose of antibiotics. The GP says bronchiectasis is quite common and some people have it without knowing.
I’m only telling you this story as coughing up blood can be ‘something or nothing’ but it certainly put my mind at rest having the tests. By the way it’s not caused by smoking - I’ve never smoked.

As others have said it’s probably a burst blood vessel. Try and speak to a doctor even if only a phone consultation.

Have you done a covid test?

As I cough up blood, for four years now, tell my doctors it doesn't exist.
Sorry to be blunt, and I am as worried as you are, but this is on all my paperwork.
It means coughing up blood with no found cause.

I’ve just spoken to MissOops and reminded her about the visit to the GP and she reminded me that she had to go for tests afterwards in case it was TB!
How could I have forgotten ? She wasn’t impressed that I had.

This is something that should not go unnoticed. The next time it happens please have it seen, even if it means a trip to A&E.

An old family GP (remember them?) that I used to work for 50 years ago, said “one symptom on its own is rarely anything to worry about” which has often settled me thinking on that over the years. But you have two symptoms. Headache + the blood. I too think it could be gum related but to be on the safe side I’d ring 111 for advice. They will book you an appointment at your surgery or secure a phone call from a doctor. Hopefully this would give you peace of mind over the weekend so would be well worth it?

I will if it happens again, I wonder if it could be a small vessel bursting in the throat and not happen again. Thank you.

Just to add, when I say we took her to our GP, I mean we took her straight round, whilst it was still bleeding, we were there in 5 minutes and he saw her straight away.

Are you sure it is not your gums bleeding? Some dentists say this can happen without provocation like teeth brushing.
Otherwise check out idiopathic hemoptysis.

When MissOops was young she had a coughing fit and coughed up blood, we took her to the GP who said that a blood vessel had popped in her throat.
It never happened again, but we were worried at the time.
If it happens again I would suggest you go to A &E and get someone to check it out for you.

Please get this checked out, ask dr to send you for a ct scan . Speaking from experience this may be something that needs checking out urgently.
