Hip pain

Quite suddenly I am experiencing severe pain around my right hip. It does feel as though the leg may just give way at times. Does arthritis begin as strongly as this? I shall try and speak to Dr next week because it is so painful. A real stabbing pain not a dull ache. Does anyone have any thoughts, please?

FannyCornforth Thu 09-Jun-22 11:24:01

That has been my experience too clbm
I should have been put on the waiting list when I was 48 and been told that I had the hip of a woman in her 80’s.
I’m lying on my bed now as I can barely stand up.

Thank you Lily. My op is a week tomorrow!
You are welcome to join us on the Hip Replacement thread.
It’s been going quite a while, and there is lots of friendly and useful general hip info.

As foe blood tests to check for rh arthritis and any arthritis. I was very very ill with a rh arthritis flare up when l didn't even know l had arthritis. Don't be fobbed off

FannyCornforth Thu 09-Jun-22 11:33:05

Oh Shirlz, that’s awful thanks

Having had two hip replacements and how you describe your symptons then see your GP who will arrange an xray
If it is a hip problem and you can afford to go private as waiting lists due to covid are sky high, then do so.

So sorry to hear of your pain. I had a fall in a badminton game a few years back and suffered a lot of pain in my back and my hip as a result.

I would advise seeing your doctor and getting both an X ray and a Dexa Scan. The latter will determine the strength of your bones, which is a vital factor in us older ladies.

I wish you all the very best.

I was told in my forties id have to wait till 60's for knee replacements- then it got so bad surgeon agreed to do it 'soon'- and I'd to see dietitian to lose a few pounds- (I'm not grossly overweight!) But then pandemic hit- I've never been recalled and now (late 50's) my other health matters are such a concern that a dble knee op would probably be a risk! - great!?

Nannan2 Thu 09-Jun-22 11:46:41

I've now started with hip pain too (as well as wrists, knees,& fingers) so soon won't literally have a leg to stand on! (Pardon the pun) ?But it's all osteoarthritis related.

Farzanah Thu 09-Jun-22 11:51:33

I feel so sorry for those of you in pain and having to wait years for hip/knee replacements, or at a huge cost, having to go privately.
My OH was fortunate to have had his 2nd hip replacement in February just before the pandemic.
It has made a huge difference and he is now able to walk weekly around 7-8 miles with local Ramblers.
Good luck with yours Fanny ?

I have the collapsing thing in my knees- its due to a hypermobility problem coupled with the OA- both run in my family. With the hypermobility my joints are not strong/rigid enough to support the legs which have no cartilage left at all.?

Buttonjugs Thu 09-Jun-22 11:55:20

What I thought was hip pain turned out to be sacroiliac joint dysfunction with piriformis syndrome which can lead to exactly the pain you have described. It causes sciatica.

I have been told that I need a hip replacement but because I am obese I was referred for bariatric surgery. I wear a size 24 clothes and I’m 5ft 2ins so there are people larger than me having surgery. I’ve been on the bariatric list for 2 years, attend zoom sessions and have had telephone consultations with the surgeon, but not seen anyone face to face. The list for bariatric surgery is about 40 weeks now. I’m not even sure that I want it though.
I’m on co-codamol for the pain in both my hips and my mobility is severely impaired now. I now use a walker in the house, I’ve just got a second one with a tray to help me carry things from the kitchen. I’ve had to resort to using a wheelchair when out, only going out to hospital or optician appointments, which makes me very embarrassed. My partner is 13 years younger than me, luckily works from home mostly so has been brilliant at making meals and other housework that I can’t do. I do online shopping, but would like to be able to get out and about like I used to.
I do get hip pain, but the same as Lily it’s the feeling as though my leg is giving way.
I’ve found that sitting on a cold pack does help to alleviate some of the pain as well, although I made the mistake of using the packing that came in a cold delivery and one of the sections burst, which I didn’t notice until I stood up. I then had a very embarrassing wet patch!
I hope everything goes well for Fanny and flowers for all those suffering.
Apologies for adding my two penn’orth. I do hope Lily gets some answers and relief next week.

I am due HR end of July and mine started with pain down the front of my thigh which the GP thought was a Femoral Hernia so i was given a scan which proved otherwise. In depth hip x rays should very bad OA in the right hip, bone on bone but my left hip still has a gap between bone so hoping it stays that way. Get to gp and on that list asap, i have suffered for almost 5 years. So glad, but very nervous about having the op. If i hadn't lost DH last year I wouldn't be worried about coping alone, but i am. The thought of coming home to an empty house and trying to manage is very un nerving.

FannyCornforth Thu 09-Jun-22 12:31:20

Oh travels, I do feel for you thanks
I’ll definitely keep an eye out for you.

I’ve got DH with me, but to be perfectly honest, I don’t know exactly how helpful he will be!
He is extremely reliant on me (my own fault!)

Grantanow Thu 09-Jun-22 12:37:02

See GP and ask for an X-ray. It's likely you will need a hip replacement. Get on the waiting list as soon as you can.

A great deal of hip and other muscle pain is due to low vitamin D levels, particularly after winter when you start to get out more.

A blood test will identify your vit D level and you can increase your level with free range eggs, grass fed milk, cream, yogurt, butter & cheese, i. e. from animals (or mushrooms if left in the sun) which can make their own with UV. Try your local farmers' market.

Vitamin D is found in oils so if you use fat free things you are probably deficient in vit D.

The supplements are of limited use - better than nothing but not as good, or as tasty, as the natural sources.

Hi, there, sorry for your hip pain. The best person to get diagnosis from is your own GP. Try him and see what he says.

Merryweather Thu 09-Jun-22 13:12:12

I had an X-ray of my spine after an accident I had months previous. I was then quickly escorted to the MRI as an emergency. I won't go into the spinal damage but it was deemed necessary to have a bone density scan too. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis aged 29 in my hips and pelvis. Please don’t ignore it. The worst of my problem I had ignored for three months and suffer with greatly. The hip pain is now so bad I use Fentanyl but nothing else can be done!!! Aged 42 I’m fit for nothing, not even the scrap heap.

NanaBabs1 Thu 09-Jun-22 13:12:43

I’d spent the last couple of years thinking my worsening hip/groin pain was arthritis and assumed it wouldn’t be dealt with until it got very much worse. A very weak right leg and much loss of mobility has finally revealed, after an MRI scan, to be caused by quite severe lumbar spinal stenosis! No back pain whatsoever! NHS waiting list for spinal decompression surgery is 12/18 months so, after much soul searching, I am off to see a private neurosurgeon this afternoon. Very, very costly, but needs must. So please don’t assume it’s your hip. Referred pain is a funny thing. Well, not exactly funny, but you know what I mean!

Nannina Thu 09-Jun-22 13:26:03

I had the odd ache and pain then woke up one morning with severe pain in my knee so bad I couldn’t put it to the floor. Knee X-ray negative but pain extended throughout leg and groin with the leg regularly ‘giving way’ Hip X-ray showed severe arthritis and I’m now waiting replacement. Some days are better than others and I’ve adapted my life accordingly .Apparently this sudden onset and referred pain and weakness is very common in hip arthritis.

SueEH Thu 09-Jun-22 13:44:35

This could also be sciatica. I had it when I was pregnant and a couple of times since. Every time on the right side with pain in my hip and just when I accepted that I needed a hip replacement it disappeared. I’d advise everyone to do some Pilates and yoga for strength and suppleness at whatever level you’re able.

About 11 years ago I experienced severe pain and a feeling of imminent dislocation in my right hip only alleviated by crouching to do up my small grandson's jacket. I self referred through our GP website to their excellent physio who arranged an X-Ray, confirming incipient osteoarthritis and gave me some very effective but simple exercises to do. The pain returned 7 years ago and a return visit to the physio reminded me of the exercises, which I resumed, and I also started walking a friend's dog regularly until he died 4 years later - although I continued walking and had no problems until earlier this year. However, I stopped walking regularly in August last year after the 2 worst years in my life culminated and a Golden Wedding gathering being marred by an absent DGS and food poisoning. My hips both seized up this time and I was walking bandy legged. Then, in April, I noticed the NHS was promoting exercise for people with arthritis and soon after the perfect dog became available. My son adopted her and I now have her daily while my son is at work and we do a 3 mile walk together. My hips are no longer painful and the 'slippage' has stopped completely. I am hoping to continue to avoid surgery - which has not actually been mentioned by anyone yet - altogether!

I would suggest taking Hyaluronic Acid capsules (330mg). They have been amazing for my hip - not as helpful for my knee pain,

susz Thu 09-Jun-22 14:22:25

I too have osteoarthritis and am waiting for a hip replacement. The pain is constant, sometimes better than others. I have had an Xray and MRI and my hip joint has completely disintegrated. The waiting times for hip replacements seems to vary across the country, here in London it's around 6 months. Exercise is essential for osteoarthritis even though it hurts like hell at times, I do yoga. Good luck and definitely press for the Xrays.

Granless Thu 09-Jun-22 14:32:38

My hip issue was diagnosed as ‘bursitis’ by my GP who has an interest in orthopaedics. I was given steroid injections to alleviate pain.
