Hip pain

Quite suddenly I am experiencing severe pain around my right hip. It does feel as though the leg may just give way at times. Does arthritis begin as strongly as this? I shall try and speak to Dr next week because it is so painful. A real stabbing pain not a dull ache. Does anyone have any thoughts, please?

I first became aware of a problem with my hip, by a sharp pain in my groin.
I didn’t actually realise it was my hip unfortunately, and I was pretty much ignored by HCP’s.
A few years down the line, I’m having a hip replacement in under two weeks.
See your GP and ask for an X-ray.
Good luck Lily

And I also had the collapsing thing, to the extent that I fell down the stairs.
I don’t want to worry you, sorry, you can’t be as unlucky as I have been with my * hip!

*Lilyof theValley*you do not mention your age but I strongly suspect you have osteoarthritis of your hip. You need an x-ray and that result will at least identify the extent of it.

It could be a symptom of something else but I would guess that would impact both sides.

It could be something very simple like bursitis (tennis elbow but in your hip) which is easily treated by a GP...

See the doctor asap, hope it improves for you soon

Yes that’s exactly how my arthritic hip started - took me 7 months to get diagnosed . Be firm and ask for an X-ray . My osteopath was the one who got it right !

Marydoll Sun 05-Jun-22 12:00:20

I have have RA and assumed the excrutiating hip pain I have was was part of it.
X-rays and MRI showed that the problem is not the actual hip, but tendinitis. A hip replacement won't help. Unfortunately, the only solution is physio, nothing can be done for me, not even a steroid injection, as the inflammation is in a very tricky spot.
I have had this for twenty years, but it is getting worse. I haven't slept for the last two nights, it's so painful and is now impacting on my knee. sad

I have been seen by an orthopeadic surgeon, he can do nothing for me, neither can my RA consultant. It is certainly not simple, but very problematic.
I will be a seeing him in a few weeks, to see what he has to say.

I too am experiencing pain in my right hip .Climbing the stairs is very difficult. I did arrange with my GP to have an x Ray but am still waiting for the results.
I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis a year again and am worried that my hop is crumbling away. I am a very young at heart, soon to be 70yr old, and hate hobbling around. Good luck with your hip situation. I think the waiting list for a replacement is currently 2yrs!!!

Thank you everyone - your replies have been very helpful! I am 76 and suppose |I ought to creak a bit but thought joint problems came along gradually! It is a shock as in my head, I could still play a few sets at Wimbledon!!

My DD had numerous X-rays which did not diagnose the problem. It was only when she had an MRI that it showed she had no cartilage in her hip. Her surgeon said he had never seen anyone so bad and she had a complete hip replacement at 42.

My hip pain is caused by Bursitis, there is no cure but should only last about 2-3 years. Mine has been very bad for 10 years! I had a few steroid injections but they didn't work and made me depressed. So I have to live with it. Consultant just brushed me off. Worst is 4am because lying still is bad for it. I can't take NSAI. My doctor thought it was arthritis but x-ray showed up the bursitis.

Obviously quite a few things cause hip pain. Need to see the doctor.

Have you tried very simple Pilates, I have a pain in my hip that can wake me at night but a few very simple exercises can really help. I know mine isn’t arthritis.

I was suddenly stricken with something similar last summer, it was excruciating painful, then it went off for a while, and came back, I carried on like this for a few months, then I went to the chiropractor, and it’s 90% better, I usually forget about it altogether.

This happened to me at the start of the year. Doctor was convinced it was arthritis, but after xray, it showed no arthritis. Had to see Physio, he diagnosed Femoral Acetabular Impingement. Nothing to treat it, other than co-codamol and ibuprofen. and of course, the dreaded excercises. The pain brought me to tears at night, it was worst lying down. At times, I really couldn't walk, had 2 months off work. It eventually faded, even though I didn't do the excercises physio had recommended, it was just too painful. So it was a self limiting condition, and I was so glad about that, thought I was condemned to suffer for the rest of my days(I am only 66). So take heart, it may work itself out, I hope so because it is so debilitating. It does twinge now and again, but nothing like it was initially.
Btw, my x-ray results came through the following day, I was gobsmacked!!

About 4 years ago I suddenly developed pain in my right groin and had pain lifting my leg to put on my socks. I was sent for an X-ray and told it was "wear and tear" which is another name for Osteoarthritis. I was referred to a physio who wasn't very helpful, but I joined an online OA support group where I learnt a lot, and put together some exercises for myself to strengthen the muscles around my hip.

Now my other hip has started the same.

Sara1954 Sun 05-Jun-22 18:43:41

Bridget
Mine was more painful at night, and although I’m not so much bothered by day, I still find at night that I can’t lie in either side, only my back.

Oopsadaisy1 Sun 05-Jun-22 21:53:33

I had this problem, waking at night with pains in my hip and down through my leg, but no pain during the day.

I put a mattress topper on my bed and the pain stopped.

Thankfully.

Charleygirl5 Sun 05-Jun-22 22:58:01

Oopsadaisy if you have pain radiating down your leg your problem may well be your back. You need an x-ray of your hip and also your lower spine.

Oopsadaisy1 Wed 08-Jun-22 06:01:55

Charleygirl been there done that and have the scars to prove it!
Since using the mattress topper the pains have totally stopped.

Crazy that something so simple has helped.

I hope you get a diagnosis soon Lily . I have just begun the process and will phone today for the result of a recent x-ray. It was my chiropractor who advised an x-ray as he says he can't do any more for the hip. Like yours, mine gives way suddenly, and sometimes a sharp pain though the main symptom is restricted movement and pain when walking despite daily exercise s, yoga, walking as much as possible. I have to take painkillers before any exercise.

Nannytopsy Wed 08-Jun-22 09:34:52

Me too! I have bursitis in both hips and very sharp pains in right groin. Even lifting my leg to put on shoes is a trial. X ray showed very mild OA which shouldn’t cause these problems.
Just had a phone conversation with a GP over the possibility of steroid injections.

LilyoftheValley Wed 08-Jun-22 19:40:33

FannyCornforth - I know your op is soon. I wish you the best and trust all will go well.

Gillycats Wed 08-Jun-22 22:54:23

Speaking from personal experience, if you don’t get any improvement from whatever they advise, I’d be quite firm in asking for an MRI scan, or x-Ray, at the very least. I went through years of hell and ended up paying to see a consultant who kindly referred me as an NHS patient (I’d just lost my job). Turns out I had severe osteoarthritis and thankfully got a hip replacement within months. I still need the other one replaced and my knees too. My advice to anyone is, yes, try what they say but don’t put up with it if there’s no improvement. I hope you get help very soon Lily.

That's how my arthritic hip started when I was 50. It quickly became agony but I had to wait five years for a replacement because I was too young! Don't know about now (it's 20 years ago) but in those days they wouldn't replace hips until you were 55. That hip replacement has lasted 20 years so far, and is still fine. The other hip was replaced seven years ago. Do get diagnosed as soon as you can. I know the waiting lists are horrendous now because of the covid backlog, but get yourself on the list as soon as you are able.
