Fungal toes

Oh dear so embarrassing but toenails becoming discoloured and yellow and know I have a fungal infection. BUT just cannot seem to clear it. I have bought two different bottles of liquid that you paint on your toenails and not cheap at about £18 per bottle but not done any good and coming up to summer and hopefully wearing sandals. Put some little footies (mini tight socks) on the other day to hide the problem.

Been told from the Doctors they do not deal with fungal infections anymore and to buy the paint on liquids which as said I have done but to no avail.

Any idea's anyone? Anybody else sorted this problem out?

Thanks.

My GP has recently prescribed me treatment for fungal toe infection, so that's not true.

I've been warned it could take a year to clear up.

Actually just seen a thread from PINKCOSMOS on this problem so shall read this and see if I can come up with an tips. You might all have already contributed to the thread so any ideas I can pick up I shall try!

But that is what my GP (well the reception desk told me when I said I would probably only need to see the nurse rather than the Doctor and she said they don't deal with this anymore and to treat myself)

The lacquer I've been prescribed is called Amorolfine. I assume the GP has prescribed the most effective. It's available online:

I have no idea if it will work because I've only just started applying it.

DH had it, did take a year to eradicate.

I had this a few years ago when my GP could not even diagnose atheletes foot, which led to fungal nails.
It took a long time to get rid of especially the big toes. I used the paint on stuff and the whole nail needs to grow out. But it can be done.

I was prescribed Terbinafine tablets but these are given as a last resort when nothing else has shifted the infection. You have to take them for six months and have blood tests during that time as they can affect your liver or kidneys.

Try your pharmacist for advice perhaps.

Cider vinegar dabbed on, then rub Vick into nail.

Takes ages, but worked for me, you have to persevere though.

You have to keep filing the surface of the nail each time before painting on the liquid. I used Protectair and it did work but it took a year, maybe more, because you have to wait for the new nail to grow up and keep removing the old fungal nail. It's definitely not a quick fix, despite what the adverts say.

A chiropodist once told me just to cover the nail with Vaseline every night. It prevents air getting to the nail and the fungus. Don't know if there is any proof other than it worked for me!!!
Plus it does both nail and cuticle no end of good so I used to do all 10 of them although I am not so dedicated now blush.

Thanks for your link to Amorolfine. It's recommended as the best thing for coating fungal nails in scientific research. I'll try it now.
I have had nail problems for years, with no success with Curanail from GP.
I am now thinking of having laser treatment as it seems to work, though research has not been followed up after 3 months. Seems more promising for serious cases.

Re Terbinafine, I tried these tablets and had bad reaction with sickness, nausea.
There are pretty serious known side affects possible to liver so I didn't continue with them. Quite scarey.

I looked this up. Serious sites claim that Vaseline will soften up the fungus-infected nail, so it will eventually fall off, but won't kill the root of the problem.

I'm sorry to hear about your toenail troubles—sounds really frustrating, especially with summer coming up! Fungal infections can be tough to shift, and it's annoying that the doctor isn't helping more.
A few ideas that have worked for others:

Keep your feet as dry as possible—change socks often, use antifungal powder in shoes, and avoid tight footwear.
Try soaking your feet in a mix of vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) for 15-20 mins daily; some swear by it for mild cases.
Over-the-counter options like terbinafine cream (instead of just paints) might be worth a go if the liquids haven't helped—apply it consistently for weeks.
If it's persistent, maybe see a podiatrist? They specialize in feet and might prescribe something stronger.

Has anyone else had luck with natural remedies like tea tree oil diluted in a carrier oil and applied daily?

Hope you get it sorted soon!

I got rid of mine with intravenously. Really nasty infection. Cleared after 6 months. Large dose 3 times a day for that time. Started to clear within a couple of weeks.

Doodledog Sun 03-Aug-25 22:20:27

I used Clearanail on the advice of my podiatrist. It took a long time, but I found that using different files from the tiny ones in the box (I used a footfile) and doing it twice a week helped to speed things up after ages of no progress. I had it on both big toenails and both are clear now.

My chiropodist advised Vick . Apply daily after shower. I have noticed some improvement but he said it could take months
