Hello! ?
Welcome to ? 2!

A huge thank you and well done to Silverlining thanks for creating the first thread (which I’ll link to shortly)
It was an amazingly successful thread; which was remarkable considering that most of the time it was invisible! smile

JenniferEccles Thu 28-Jul-22 15:38:33

I didn’t hug mine GrannyLaine but I did, as I was leaving his office, thank him very much for making me pain free. This was at the six week check up when I was discharged from his care.
He beamed at me! I wouldn’t mind betting quite a few patients are so grateful that they thank them in some way.

FannyCornforth Thu 28-Jul-22 16:03:45

Hello everyone
Am I allowed a moan, please?
I feel awful. Getting used to walking again is causing me loads of pain.
I’ve done just over 300 steps today, just putting the shopping away and tidying a bit; and both my hips really hurt, ditto my back, stomach, calves and feet.
I’m really struggling ?

FannyCornforth Thu 28-Jul-22 16:43:31

Is this normal or cause for concern?
Thank you

GrannyLaine Thu 28-Jul-22 17:34:39

Fanny I think it depends: as a rule of thumb I'd say if a couple of paracetamol and a good rest make you feel better, then its okay. If it doesn't help and/ or you have other symptoms such as fever / sore throat / headache you're probably looking at something unconnected to your surgery. Are you using sticks or some other device to help with weight bearing when walking?

silverlining48 Thu 28-Jul-22 17:58:07

So sorry to hear you aren’t feeling well Fanny. Hope this improves in the coming days but keep an eye out fir a temperature etc take it easy tomorrow and see how you are. Don’t forget it’s not that long since you had major surgery.

silverlining48 Thu 28-Jul-22 18:01:49

I will be seeing my surgeon next month, should have been today. I don’t think I will hug him. I am grateful but he was quite rude to me just before my operation which did upset me. He knows I was upset yet still spent about 10 minutes of my last appointment asking me for not one but two reviews of how wonderful he is. I have yet to complete these.

GrannyLaine Thu 28-Jul-22 18:30:42

Glasgow kiss for him then Silverlining
Will you do the reviews? Surgeons have historically had a bit of a reputation for arrogance and I've come across a few in my time. But that's perhaps a bit of a sweeping generalisation. I've had some pretty horrible experiences of poor care which is what made me delay my surgery for so long.

silverlining48 Thu 28-Jul-22 18:49:01

GrannyLaine, I wasn’t sure what a Glasgow kiss is so checked mr Google. That sounds about right. Ha ha ! He would get a surprise.
Yes surgeons, especially those of the orthopaedic variety are known to be rude but this was unexpected and quite personal, (Body shaming).
No I won’t be reviewing him because I would need to include his remark. Prior to that moment he had been charming.

travelsafar Thu 28-Jul-22 22:21:10

Hi Fanny so sorry to hear you are unwell, really hope its nothing serious. You go ahead and moan because I will be following right behind you. I really am beginning to wonder what I've done!!! The pain is so immense in my leg it took me 20mins to lift it onto the bed tonight and I'm exhausted from the effort I still have to move again as my foot is hanging over the edge. I know it's early days for me but I'm scared about how long I'm gonna be like this. Already my house is untidy, I seem to drop everything I pick up and I can't bear not being able to shower every day. Sorry folks to be so down. Just taken 2 codiene so hope they knock me out so I can sleep ?

I'm sorry to read that, FannyC, not sure if this is a usual reaction.
Do you have mobile numbers for your after-care team? Can you phone them tomorrow or your GP?

FannyCornforth Fri 29-Jul-22 08:02:40

Hello Hipsters and friends

Thank you so much for your replies and kind messages.

Laine, no I definitely don’t have a headache or fever - it’s all muscular.
And no, paracetamol wouldn’t touch it. I’m taking Tramodol and occasionally oramorph.

I have hardly used my crutches at all. For the first week, I used a walker to go to and fro the loo at night.
I had to take the dog to the vets and used my crutches then (second week) and that’s it.
I was walking unaided pretty much from the off.

I’m not really surprised that I’ve got further pain and mobility problems - I was in a terrible state prior to the op.
I was pretty much housebound for two years.
I couldn’t walk round a supermarket or anything like that.
Towards the end I could barely stand up.

Travels yes, let’s have a jolly good moan together smile
I’m sorry that you are feeling so rough, I’m sure that you’ll feel much, much better in just a couple of weeks.

I do hope that you managed to have a decent night.
Re showering - I usually just had a wash at the sink (while almost flooding the bathroom) and I also got some massive baby wipe things which really do make you feel 100% clean. They are marvellous. I’ll find out what they are called and get back to you.

Silverlining re your surgeon and the ‘body shaming’. Have you considered complaining?
Have you seen my thread about my complaint about a nurse?
I’ll do a link.

Callistemon thank you. I’m going to phone the hospital today and see if I can speak to somebody about the pain and mobility problems. I’m incredibly stiff today.

Thank you all again thanksbrew

My thread about the horrible nurse

FannyCornforth Fri 29-Jul-22 08:13:47

The thread that is directly above this one in the (so-called) Active List, was last posted on at 8.46 pm last night hmm

silverlining48 Fri 29-Jul-22 08:49:32

Does anyone know why this has kept happening both to this new thread and the first one? Can’t pretend to understand these things.
It’s almost at the bottom of the as you say, Active (!) List despite all our posts now.

Fanny yes I saw your post about the nurse and empathised. I am undecided ??‍♀️ as I did have an opportunity to tell him what I thought of his inappropriate comment.
I am sorry you are feeling rough and hope you get some help from the hospital if you ring them.

silverlining48 Fri 29-Jul-22 08:52:19

Travels hope you got some sleep and have a better day today.

Aveline Fri 29-Jul-22 09:01:40

What's wrong with paracetamol? They were the only painkillers I took after knee and hip replacements and worked well for me.

travelsafar Fri 29-Jul-22 09:12:31

Actually feeling good today despite pain and lack of sleep. As up so early managed to was and dress myself before carer arrived to do stockings. I also washed my hair over bathroom sink. Always feel better wiv clean hair. Am about to load washing machine so DD can hang out when she arrives. All good in the bowel department too despite all codiene I'm taking it must be the lactulose working. Have a good day every one.smile

silverlining48 Fri 29-Jul-22 09:53:50

Have a lovely day travels but don’t overdo it.

FannyCornforth Fri 29-Jul-22 09:55:22

Aveline

Well, obviously our circumstances and conditions aren’t the same Aveline.
Of course, I don’t expect you to be aware of my medical history.
I’ve been taking opioids and other pain relief including Tramodol, Oramorph and Pregabalin for over 18 months.
You are fortunate that you only needed paracetamol.

FannyCornforth Fri 29-Jul-22 10:00:41

Thank you Travels and Silverling.

Travels you sound like you are doing well! Well done, and I know exactly what you mean about hair.
Mine is definitely in need of some attention.
Yes, and Silver is so right, it’s easy to overdo it; and you don’t know until you have overdone it…

Aveline Fri 29-Jul-22 10:00:59

I know. The swearing helped too. I hated the effect that opioids had on me so flatly refused them after the first time.

GrannyLaine Fri 29-Jul-22 10:18:44

Fanny thanks for clarifying. I'm totally impressed that you have been managing pretty much without sticks or crutches: it took me so much longer. Are you having some physio input? From what you describe, it sounds as though that would be helpful. One thing I have noticed as I have regained range of movement is that my body is having to re-learn its normal mechanisms. So for example, now my hip is flexible enough to allow me to paint my toenails, I find that the muscles in my back are tight from lack of use for that particular movement. I'm needing to stretch them to regain normal range.
Anyway, how are you feeling today? Have things improved a little?

silverlining48 Fri 29-Jul-22 10:24:56

GrannyLaine super impressed about painting toenails, it has been many a long year since I could.

silverlining48 Fri 29-Jul-22 11:06:47

Fanny have I said that the 6 dancing hipsters on the thread title while cheery of course, also help to identify where we are on the active list, what a good idea.
Hope you and travels and anyone eise waiting or recovering all have a good day.
