Hello! ?
Welcome to ? 2!

A huge thank you and well done to Silverlining thanks for creating the first thread (which I’ll link to shortly)
It was an amazingly successful thread; which was remarkable considering that most of the time it was invisible! smile

I too will give this thread a bump up..
Now 9 weeks post hip.
After ages I cleaned out the food cupboard under the kitchen work top. I sat on a little stool and went for it.
It's been bugging me for months. Even went through the herbs and spices that was embarrassing!

I know others have had this itch but I got there in the end, you all will.

Think it was a post on this link that got me thinking.. So Thank you Hipsters.

Visgirl when Christmas arrives you will be saying to yourself- surgery- what surgery? All the pain has gone and most things you will be able to do without a thought. You have done well.

Charleygirl5 Sat 15-Oct-22 21:26:46

OMG that was quick, off the main page in 10 minutes.

Just giving us a bump up the list.

Is it just me or is being really tired after any trip to the shops dragging shopping trolley extremely tiring.
I have just joined the list for the op but I find I am worn out all the time.
I have OA in other parts too.
My family and friends still expect me to jump to their needs as energetically, if not enthusiastically,as previously,I will be 70 just after christmas,am I a wimp or is the tiredness a real thing ?

silverlining48 Sun 16-Oct-22 09:57:56

If you are in pain then anything can be tiring downtoearth.
Or if you have had COVID tiredness can hang around for a while.
Either way it does get in the way of day to day life.
I believe it’s the body trying to tell you something and that is to rest if you can,
Let friends and family know your energy is low and if they offer to help then accept. (If you refuse they might not offer again).

downtoearth Sun 16-Oct-22 13:17:26

Thanks Silverlining it isnt covid based, maybe more people making demands on me,especially a disabled neighbour who's needs have insidiously increased and he is very needy hmm

Charleygirl5 Sun 16-Oct-22 15:11:05

downtoearth I sincerely hope these people like your needy next-door neighbour will not be expecting you to help them the day after you return home having had major surgery.

I would start to drop hints that for 6 months after surgery you will be looking after one person only, yourself. You must learn the word no.

I get tired and I try not to doze off but it does not always happen. There are a few TV programmes I never see the end of but my excuse is I am 79. Most nights I sleep well even after my trips to the loo.

These folk have to start looking ahead and/or making arrangements for themselves because you are not ruining your new hip because somebody asked you to do something which would only take 5 minutes and 2 hours later you are struggling.

downtoearth Sun 16-Oct-22 17:02:10

Thanks charleygirl, wondered if it is just me that gets worn out at times.

Hello and welcome downtoearth, I've not been on here for a while but I had my right hip replaced on February 24th. I'm a similar age to you. Despite struggling for years, I had put off having surgery for a long time. My pain was always much worse at night so I slept badly despite opioid painkillers. I definitely got tired very easily and needed a fair bit of rest in the day. My surgery was very successful and I've had an uncomplicated recovery . I have way more energy now than I've had for ages (despite also recovering from recent Covid ?)
I no longer need analgesics and I'm sure that has made a big difference and of course, getting a good nights sleep has had a big impact. You are most definitely NOT a wimp!

downtoearth Sun 16-Oct-22 19:31:53

Thanks GrannyLaine I have a couple of friends who are a year younger than me,who seem to have untold energy and bounce around like Tigger on steroids.
It's good to hear the tiredness is definitely a thing that can happen, especially during a flare up of OA on other parts of my body.

The arthritis in my knees and hands seems to come and go. The strange thing about pain is when it does go it’s difficult to remember how bad it was till it comes back. Every now and again a sudden movement will cause pain in my hip which doesn’t go away so I’m sure my hips are going the same way. However when that happens I now immediately smother the area with either ibuprofen or voltarol and that evening ( because it makes me drowsy) take some co dydramol. Thus far that has nipped it in the bud. However the reason I’m writing this is because I go through phases of taking turmeric in the form of golden paste and then I’ll forget to take it for a while. So I’m going to start a diary to see if there’s a link between arthritis flare ups and when I’m taking turmeric. I spoke to a friend of mine recently who’d had a knee replacement. I rang her soon after the operation and she sounded in such pain but I’m pleased to say that she said she did everything she was told to do and was on the mend very quickly. I found that very reassuring given that I’m sure I’ll need a new knee at some point. I know when I do get a flare up everyday things seem to be so much more difficult and tiring. I do envy people that don’t suffer from arthritis.

Charleygirl5 Sun 16-Oct-22 20:31:10

Maybee there are very few. I have a friend who is one of them. She has never had a day's illness in her life and has never been in hospital or broken a bone. From the pain point of view, she has led a very charmed life so does not understand what others go through.

After my last knee replacement, she visited me in the hospital but not at home because heaven forbid she may have had to make a cup of coffee or even worse, rinse a couple of mugs!

MayBee70 Sun 16-Oct-22 21:06:50

DH doesn’t have any arthritis envy

downtoearth Sun 16-Oct-22 21:50:05

Visgir1 Mon 17-Oct-22 09:11:16

Question for Post Hipster..
When walking for a while has any one had muscle pain from your "Gluteus Medius" the muscle that sits above the Glut Max? On the operated side only?
I'm OK then it starts getting tight or stiff I'm not sure?
Really is a pain in the bum!

silverlining48 Mon 17-Oct-22 09:26:01

My operated hip sometimes aches when I walk but am not sure where the pain is coming from . It’s sort of general.
Would it help to take regular paracetamol/pain relief.

silverlining48 Mon 17-Oct-22 09:30:35

Actually it’s not my hip as much as my leg generally.

Charleygirl5 Mon 17-Oct-22 10:51:13

silverlining I hate to put a spanner in the works but you may have back pain problems if you have pain radiating down the back of your leg.

Are some of you ladies not overdoing the walking?

silverlining48 Mon 17-Oct-22 11:40:22

I may have been guilty of too much walking a few weeks ago but have done none fir 10 days since picking up covid.
Will bear in mind Charleygirl. Thanks.
