Thanks Charleygirl. Glad I mentioned it.

How to Keep Living at Home Longer
Hello! ?
Welcome to ? 2!
A huge thank you and well done to Silverlining
for creating the first thread (which I’ll link to shortly)
It was an amazingly successful thread; which was remarkable considering that most of the time it was invisible!
Thanks Charleygirl. Glad I mentioned it.
Yet again Gransnetters you have come up trump's!!
I have 3 grabbers at home...1 upstairs, 1 downstairs and 1 in the garden. I have a Sockaid, long shoe horn. Long handled sponges for soaping with. 2 walking sticks...1 upstairs and 1 downstairs. Body wipes.. like Drench which someone had mentioned.
But oh for a raised toilet seat with handles..
I have been exercising but think I've
overdone it today. Lots of pain in both upper thighs and that unrelenting groin pain..
. Good night everyone. Hope you have a peaceful, painless sleep. ( If only..) x
labradorlinda the hospital will supply you with the correct raised loo seat.
100 years ago an OT used to visit your home and if necessary supply the correct gadgets to raise your bed and or chairs.
Please do not forget to have somebody bring extra cushions or even a pillow for the passenger seat for your journey home + a plastic bag so you can slide in easily. This is something you can practice now and get used to it.
Have you tried to sleep on your back but with pillows or cushions propping you up?
Do not worry, us lot will get you through it as smoothly as possible.
I got my raised toilet seat with handles from Amazon. The hospital only seemed to have plastic seats that lay on top of the existing seat and was worryingly wobbly. I'm glad I got my own one with its sturdy frame. The hospital did give me a very slippy sheet of plastic which was good when getting in and out of bed. Carefully though as it's very slippy!

The hospital explained I should have antibiotics when having the necessary dental work done (tooth finally came out on Day 5 in hospital …….) so dental surgeon has prescribed Amoxicillin 500mg to begin before extraction of root. I have them at home all ready to start next week.
At least my hip is doing really well and pain free. It’s 11 weeks old today!
Glad that’s all sorted iPadGrandma. I didn’t know about this until my dd was having intensive chemo and multiple surgeries and they said she should get her teeth seen beforehand because potential infection could be dangerous.
My toilet seat was plastic but fixed securely to the toilet so didn’t wobble.
The frame round the toilet was part of a commode seat with the commode part removed. Hadn’t realised they were so versatile. Bought it new and unused from a charity shop . It’s up in the loft now with the other equipment I cobbled together. Just in case....one never knows. There’s another hip and two knees which might need seeing to at some point.
Happy 11 weeks birthday to the new hip. You will start counting in months now.
My garden shed is looking after my perching chair, Zimmer frame, commode and 2 pairs of crutches. I hope to never need them but who knows?
Please note if you are on the list for surgery and you have more than one loo, only one raised loo seat will be supplied.

I had x2 loo seats.. On reading this it really depends where you live.
I was offered perching stool as well the OT went through a list asking what I wanted.
Amazing how different areas are?
Visgirl I was not given a perching chair. A good friend worked at a local orthopaedic hospital and they were giving away perfectly good items so each of us acquired a perching chair. Ditto with the commode.
I was given a very handy trolley by Social Services after my last knee replacement because using crutches I could not carry a cup of coffee out of my minute kitchen, never mind a meal.
Since then my kitchen has been enlarged so I would not mind dining there. The trolley was sturdy enough to act as a Zimmer frame for me. I was not asked to return it but after my first TKR in 2012, somebody came and removed everything I had borrowed after 3 months.
The best item I have ever bought is the height-adjustable stool in my shower which did not cost a fortune on Amazon.
I didn’t see an OT or social services before or after my operation. No preparation course or information of any kind. Went into hospital with nothing other than my shoe horn, came out with a toilet seat and two sticks. Anything else I got myself. Grateful but was worried about seating etc and the dreaded 90 degree rule.
Never did get a perching stool but it all worked out though and am just back from the first of 6 hydrotherapy sessions at the local hospital.
silverlining I think it is disgraceful the way some people are treated in certain places and this is why we need something like this. Some of my professional knowledge is outdated but I do remember the hints and tips.
Thanks Charleygirl. You are right it’s very different for many of us.
I think a while back I read a gran saying she was going fir an annual post hip check. I was discharged 6 or so weeks post op with no further checks. Not too worried but I do get sharp little needle like pains in the hip area sometimes, and wonder if others have had anything similar.
I was given two sticks and the slippy sheet. Telephone follow up appointment at 8 weeks post op. That was it! Luckily I was fine but don't know what I would have done if I hadn't been.
silverlining it may be your new hip telling you not to do so much. It takes about a year for a hip to be fully functioning and you have forgotten about it.
Charleygirl Am doing a long walk tomorrow, my favourite and the first time I have been able to consider doing it since last summer, so will see how I am at the end of it all.
The sharp little pains just come and go and aren’t too bad but will have a care.
Hello everyone, I had a call from the hospital where I'm having my THR on 8th November.
All ok. However, I am in so much pain when I am mobile I cannot believe this pain will be gone ( hopefully).
I am a very pro active person, I will try anything to relieve my pain, exercise etc...but this pain is overwhelming me at times when I move.
If I could stay immobile for most of the time I would be ok.
But of course I can't.
I'm getting nearer my date but further away from the fact that this surgery will improve my qualify of life. Sorry to sound so negative.
I hope you all have a good weekend..
You honestly will be amazed at the difference this surgery will make. It's not long now. Hang in there.
Hello again Labrador Linda. I feeling pretty pleased with myself today because I did a lovely long walk cliff walk today. No pain at all.
I was walking a couple of weeks after my operation and you will too. Honestly by or before Christmas you will be up and about, pain free and your pre op exercises will stand you in good stead.
Have faith you will be fine. Honestly!
The pain will be gone straight after the surgery. Well give it a day or two, but really you will be amazed.
Thank you Aveline and Silver lining for your positivity...( Is that a word?)
I'm just being maudlin...
We're away for a couple of days tomorrow... perhaps I just need a change of scenery...
Enjoy your weekend everyone..
Keep wondering how many posts will it take for one to appear on Active! It’s only those in the know who know!
Enjoy your break and please don’t worry.
silverlining I get the little sharp needle like twinges sometimes too . I think it maybe the nerve endings repairing still. I have just returned from a nerve racking stay at DD and family to help out with minding the children over half term. They moved a year ago to a house that needs a lot of renovations but since they moved, prices have shot up and availability of builders is nonexistent. So I was teetering around a house with so many hazards -rugs rucking up, dogs lying in doorways, shoes as well as kids toys scattered everywhere, as well as building projects on going. I’m a nervous wreck ! Their drive alone brings me out in a cold sweat- a steep climb and potholes everywhere. I seemed to be attached permanently to my stick that I had pretty well given up. I missed my swimming whilst away but exercise on prescription classes start next week so hopefully my muscles will strengthen more. Still not walking as far as I used to , I just run out of stamina , no pain apart from my back still so hopefully the classes will address that along with gentle Aqua classes. But cataract op shouldn’t be long now so that will give me more confidence too.
Susie The sooner you are back in your own home the better- not quite where you should have been. You may have little strength but you have no pain- that is a positive and you will be doing strengthening exercises in the form of swimming.
Labradorlinda just think the date is 2022, not 2023 which it could easily be. I promise you the end is in sight and a couple of days post-operative pain and the knawing ache will have left you for good.
2 weeks today you will be moaning you are having problems sleeping on your back but you will not be mentioning pain!
Enjoy your couple of days away, and have alcohol because you will not be allowed to have any if by chance you are on antibiotics post-op for any reason. Each hospital and surgeon are different. The sun is shining for you, enjoy!
Labradorlinda My own experience in August was that I had no pain at all after my hip replacement. If there was any in the first few days after surgery, it must have been dealt with by the strong pain killers given in hospital. Your old hip will be gone and you will have a new one. I hope all goes well for you too.
