Yes, I know using capitals means shouting!

Shouting is needed for this.

Your right Sago Just said to a neighbour today people flock to countries regularly having high temps and pay thousands for the pleasure. Then they come back and brag about the lovely hot weather they had. Yes there are people for whom high temps can be a problem but the meedia is going over the top here.

ALANaV Thu 14-Jul-22 20:19:12

Ha ha if its any consolation where I live on the N E coast today has been chilly and pouring with rain !!!

Summerlove Thu 14-Jul-22 20:24:59

Sago

So it’s hot!
Millions of us leave Blighty every year to find sun for a week or two, when we get there we know what to do!
Please don’t panic everyone.

Make sure you don't share that sentiment with the families of those that die during a heat wave.

over 600 seniors in western Canada died last summer in a one week period due to extreme heat.

Looks like over 2000 died in the UK in 2020 due to heat, just under 1500 in 2021.

Extreme heat is nothing to mock.

I've been looking through what used to be my tidy cupboard, and found some (white) blackout material that you can cut, and the velcro to put it up with, MadeInYorkshire.
If I could get it to you, is there someone who could put it up for you?

MawtheMerrier Thu 14-Jul-22 20:51:43

Don’t forget our 4-legged friends

Grandma29 Thu 14-Jul-22 21:38:12

Yes we know it’s going to be very hot!
Sometimes though I feel these sort of headlines don’t help but just makes people feel anxious.
Just stay in if possible and don’t expose yourself too much to the sun.

Nt forgetting that pavements can get extremely hot for paws and it's best not to take dogs out in the heat of the day.

Our two long haired cats hate the heat! They usually find respite under a bush in the garden. If it’s very hot they come in the house and splay themselves out on the lounge carpet. I make sure their water bowl is topped up. We don’t give them any wet food in the heat as it gets maggoty very quickly. Just dry food and their favourite Dreamies treats.

I have cancelled all engagements for most of next week and intend to stay home and stay undercover.

We are on holiday at the moment, but having looked at the weather forecasts before we came away, I drew all the curtains on the south side of the house. Most windows have double glazing with a thermal coating so I am hoping that the house will have kept reasonable cool. Most rooms are double aspect, so we will just opn windows both ends of the rooms we use once we get home.

This…. I worked in Wales in the summer of 1976 and we didn’t have any of this sort of thing.. but if it’s going to be the hottest day in history ?

merlotgran Fri 15-Jul-22 11:59:28

I belong to an allotment group and it was watering duty for me today so I got there at 7am as everyone is watering early at the moment and the pressure can be low. It took me an hour and a half and it was getting hot by the time I left but it wasn’t quite high tide so safe to park my car at the top of the creek where it’s only a short walk from the plot.

Lucky, lucky people who live there but way out of my price range so I’ll have to settle for being the envious gardener! ?

Shandy57 Fri 15-Jul-22 11:59:46

I volunteered with my daughter at a wildlife centre in SA, and the temperature rose to 40 degrees. I found it very difficult working in such heat, and definitely wasn't going to be able to run if the ostrich decided to charge!

It’s been on every news bulletin this morning, in addition to being anticipated all of yesterday - news, weather forecasts etc etc
I find it hard to believe there is anybody out there to whom this comes as news!

merlotgran Fri 15-Jul-22 12:21:08

My Yorkshire DH couldn’t stand hot weather and every year the kids and I would take bets on how soon he would moan, ‘It’s going to be just like 1976’. Usually the first warm day ?

He would hate this and I miss him like hell but as a Nesh Southerner I’m back in my zone! ?

The timestamp on the story has been updated and the image has been changed.

When I saw it, at 10:54, the timestamp was 10:51, so I thought it was new, and so I posted a link here.

It is a very concerning situation for me.

MawtheMerrier Fri 15-Jul-22 12:43:24

I am trying not to allow myself to worry about next week not on my own account, but GS(12) and SIL and a group from GS’s school are on a big bike ride from Hull to Felixstowe. I have to assume all safety precautions will be taken as GS would be desperately disappointed it were cancelled.

Ice cubes - so versatile...

NannanTo4 Fri 15-Jul-22 13:22:13

I remember back in the day when we used to call warm weather ‘a good summer’ !!!

Shandy57 Fri 15-Jul-22 13:28:34

16 degrees and torrential rain here in Northumberland!

MissAdventure Fri 15-Jul-22 13:33:59

That's you set for the next 40 days then. (I think)

merlotgran Fri 15-Jul-22 13:38:09

Just watched the BBC weather reporter on the lunchtime news. He was loving every moment of piling on the threat of impending doom on Monday. Apparently we must all head for the local library where they might have air conditioning. ?

I wonder if he’s related to Private Frazer of Dad’s Army? ?

Stardreamer thank you very much for posting this link.
I hadn't seen a lot of the details before and a lot of it is very relevant to me and my family.
I've forwarded it on to them.

MissAdventure Oh how kind, suspect it would help a bit, and yes would have someone to put up for me ... If you message me I can give you my address and Paypal you some postage money?

MissAdventure Fri 15-Jul-22 14:14:06

Just your address will be fine, but I have to work out how to get to the post office as I'm not very mobile myself.

I'm sure there might be some sort of service where a parcel can be picked up from someone's home.

Hang on, I'll have a google.
