Yes, I know using capitals means shouting!

Shouting is needed for this.

I prefer the Met Office website, it’s usually more accurate than the red tops, though no sensational headlines!

So it’s hot!
Millions of us leave Blighty every year to find sun for a week or two, when we get there we know what to do!
Please don’t panic everyone.

Its Summer
It’s July
The sun is shining
When else would anybody expect it to be hot?

MerylStreep Tue 12-Jul-22 16:05:39

This is nanny state going a tad tooooo far.
Quiet right Sago

The number of beach visitors having fires here is worrying, as people are making the fires very near to the marram grass in the dunes. My friend in Torquay has just uploaded a photo of a fire in the small wood near their beach - if the trees burn down, the soil on the cliff will erode. Hopefully the fire brigade caught it in time.

I'm old enough to have taken my 2 year old daughter to Bournemouth for a holiday in 1976. Sunny and hot every day and for weeks thereafter. No warnings from HMG, we were treated like adults in those days.

where do people think the 'red tops' get the information from for goodness sake?

lemsip Tue 12-Jul-22 17:02:21

damned if they warn us and damned AND sued if they don't

MissAdventure Tue 12-Jul-22 17:04:15

Thank you, stardreamer smile

It’s not sensationalised on the Met Office website though is it Lemsip? It’s a Level 4 warning, not a Level 5. There’s no need for hold headlines every time the temperature gets above 30 in July.

MissAdventure Tue 12-Jul-22 17:08:59

The independent has a weather warning, too.

Lexisgranny Tue 12-Jul-22 17:17:07

I amuse myself by checking the Met Office, the BBC and AccuWeather for our area. It is rare for all three to agree. The boot of our car has a supply of clothes for all weather when we go out for the day, and washdays are judged by the amount and colour of clouds on the horizon. I think had we been living in the south there would be a greater degree of accuracy.

Well, I get free email feeds, at my request, from a number of sources.

I saw that story and felt it would be helpful to note it here.

I have been affected by the heat yesterday, at home, in doors, deliberately not exerting myself.

I came on now to mention, in case it MIGHT help at least one other person that I have found this afternoon when I was hot that a paper plate makes a very effective fan that helped me cool down.

Maybe posting that MIGHT help someone, one or more or people MIGHT add a packet of paper plates to a grocery order to be delivered later this week. My suggestio MIGHT help someone.

Fine, you have added the link that you have added. Thank you. You have helpfully contributed to the thread.

Would you have posted that link if I had not started this thread?

heat stroke is a very real danger, esp to the vulnerable.
there was also much sunstroke and later skin cancer due to yesteryear ignorance/ cavalier attitude to the sun.
i don't see that as admirable.

Each to their own.

No way would I go to try and find a hot place.

I am not panicing.

It is like when COVID-19 started and the media ranted about so-called "panic buying".

I remember Sky News, interviewing a woman who had just emerged from a supermaket building with a trolley piled high with food.

She, quite calmly, said that she was not panicing, the government had said that people might have to stay indoors for a fortnight so she was getting enough food for her children, her husband and herself for a fortnight.

I am not panicing. I am very concerned. I am quietly trying to think out what, if anything, I can do to help me survive such extreme temperatures.

You state "we know what to do". So could you tell me, and anyone else who would like to know, what to do please?

Shirley48 Tue 12-Jul-22 17:31:06

Paper plates are not very good for the environment.

People are not very good for the environment.
All those miles flown/driven, seeking out the sun.

StarDreamer Tue 12-Jul-22 17:34:36

Well one of them was good for my immediate environment this afternoon, and it can be used again!

I didn’t advocate flying?

MissAdventure Tue 12-Jul-22 17:36:21

I didn't say you did. smile

Shirley48 Tue 12-Jul-22 17:37:34

Ah, I don’t like arguments for the sake of it, so I’ll be off. Enjoy yourselves!

AGAA4 Tue 12-Jul-22 17:46:20

Nobody needs to panic just be aware that heat can cause problems.
2500 people died from heatstroke last year - BBC news.
If you follow the advice you will be fine. Pets too need to be looked after in hot weather. I see people walking their dogs at the hottest part of the day. Madness.

MissAdventure Tue 12-Jul-22 17:48:52

The advice is (or used to be) to stay in, with the windows and curtains closed when it is very hot.

Opening them just lets the heat in.

62Granny Tue 12-Jul-22 17:57:15

Why does the heat feel different when you are abroad? is it because we sit around a pool or on a beach all day and food is cooked for you no faffing about cooking or clearing away and air con in your room at night .
