Yes, I know using capitals means shouting!

Shouting is needed for this.

I have just driven the 60 miles or so home from London and what a lovely day it is! It feels about 10C cooler than the last few days in Walthamstow - so either it has cooled down or I had become acclimatised., At any rate, this is pleasant July weather ?

LovelyLady Thu 14-Jul-22 14:46:27

Amazing it’s hot in summertime.
When I was little the tar on the roads melted and stick to our sandals. Haven’t seen that for a while.
Being hot in summertime is not news.
Wear a hat and stay in the shade if too hot and Drink water from the tap not bought water from a shop.
When did education become so bad that we didn’t know any of this.

The summer of ‘76 I had shingles and was pregnant but my overriding memory is of the cracked earth everywhere and water standpipes for rationing.

Well it's a nice 20C up here in North Yorkshire. The sun is shining, locals and tourists look happy. Enjoy the good weather while it lasts.

20-25 degrees suits a lot of people (me included), but next Mon and Tues sound as if they’re going to get quite a bit hotter than that!

Is there anyone left there to have a meeting?

Theoddbird Thu 14-Jul-22 13:23:28

Hopefully we will have a few days of really heavy rain soon....

MissAdventure Thu 14-Jul-22 12:54:50

Sorry, what was the question again?

> I honestly don’t know what you are concerned about, ...

I am concerned about my health in this hot weather and in the predicted forthcoming extremely hot weather.

If you are not concerned then that is a matter for you.

I, and possibly a lot of other people, are concerned.

keep sipping the water...
also something a bit salty to eat might help.
or a banana, for the potassium.
i felt a bit better after a packet of crisps.

Just wanted to back this up. Whilst living in Turkey and drinking lots of water, I started to get leg cramps every night. Someone I knew suggested a lack of salt may be the reason. All you need is one salty biscuit. Anyway the cramps disappeared.

DH again in Turkey got sunstroke. I made him drink Coke, the real one as we didn’t have any rehydration packs. The doctor said had I not done that he would have been in hospital. My daughter’s friend, many years ago told me about the Coke. She had Delhi belly and was given this particular piece of advice. It has to be the original Coke because of the balance of salt and sugar.

I've just said on another thread, - I wish we could buy pretty little parasols to protect ourselves in this heat. Umbrellas just don't look right.

We have a Wan Chai burberry somewhere in the attic - supposedly to keep off the rain but it might look more fetching than a black umbrella.

However, it's too warm to go hunting in the attic.

Witzend Thu 14-Jul-22 10:09:02

henetha, in SE Asian countries I’ve often seen people using ordinary umbrellas as parasols. They evidently don’t care how they look.
I bought 2 dual purpose white parasols/umbrellas for a dd’s wedding do in France, in August, in an area where I knew from experience that it could be either stinking hot, or chucking it down. Thank goodness it was neither! It chucked it down all day exactly a week later.

We all need to drink more in the hot weather. But make sure you have a bit of salt. When I had months of UTIs and kidney infections that needed a long course of antibiotics to finally get rid of. I upped my fluid intact from 8-10 drinks a day to 14-16 and my GP told me that was to much and go back to 8-10. She had a blood test done and all the extra fluids had diluted my sodium and folic acid levels to much. Had to have 3 month course of folic acid tablets.

As I have been drinking more water I make sure I have a few grains of salt and a folic acid tablet everyday.

One of the women at my exercise class had a fine mist water bottle. She pumped up the bottom and a fine mist cooled down her face. She's had it years but they are for sale on Amazon. I will be getting one.

Innocent bystander at 8.49 yesterday.
Just to mention that your link was for England only. Always surprises me that people forget about the other nations in the UK. So the figure quoted didn't include Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Dh and i were supposed to be going to our static in somerset tomorrow, but i have covid, where i picked that up from i really do not know.
So family members are going in our place.
I couldn`t have driven in this heat anyway tbh.
So stopping indoors in the cool lounge.
Enjoy the heat for those that love it.

Serendipity22 Thu 14-Jul-22 07:35:10

Ahhhhhh MissAdventure excellent..... wowww, im going to try that on Monday, predicted 34°. shockshockshock

MissAdventure Wed 13-Jul-22 22:59:56

I have another to add.
Fill your hot water bottle and put it in the freezer, and take that to bed with you (the hot water bottle, not the freezer!)

MawtheMerrier Wed 13-Jul-22 22:55:24

Top tips from today’s Times for sleeping in the heat
1. Have a cool or lukewarm shower or bath (but don’t overuse soaps, which can diminish your body’s natural flora and allow fungal growth).
2. Wet your face and arms with a wet towel or water spray bottle, then stand in front of a fan.
3. Soak your feet in cold water or a cold water bottle for 10 minutes before going to bed.
4. Put your socks in the fridge.
5. Wet your hair.
6. Ice packs on your skin.
7. Don’t make important decisions after a night of disturbed sleep.
8. Banish your pet from your bed, and possibly your partner, too.
9. Move your bed to a cooler room, as top floors are usually hotter. You may wish to move your bed downstairs to a sitting room or cellar.

Yes the summer of 1976 was hot.

I was much younger then than I am now.

I was working at a holiday camp in Wales and I remember the summer of 1976 very well…..

I was working at a Hotel in Scarborough , never forgotten the summer of '76

I can't even remember the year right.
I blame Elvis Presley.

Do you remember Mississippi in 1976?
