Current covid variant symptoms

A friend that has just had covid for the 2nd time has been much sicker than her first time.

She's not yet 40, so still young. Symptoms were respiratory this time, even coughing up blood. Whereas last time, she was just vaguely 'off'.

Hubby & I have avoided it until now. Mine started 3 days before testing positive with headache, sore throat and fatigue but although I still have a cough and nasal congestion don't feel too bad. Hubby on the other hand has been in bed for 3 days. Extreme fatigue and muscle pain, diarrhoea, headache and dizziness. Amazing how it affects us all in so many different ways.
Agree we have become too complacent and not realising some of us will still be extremely ill with it. Mask wearing now feels like a thing of the past and almost feel I'm being ridiculed for wearing one. Have recently returned from Italy where it is still mandatory in certain settings. Perhaps it shobe here too!

Giving out blood from either end - mouth or anus - means see GP asap.

Greciangirl Mon 25-Jul-22 14:52:02

Yes, another one here who has it.
I tested positive last Wednesday.

Initially, I had dreadful phlegm along with a cough.

Totally drained of energy. But I put that down to the heat mainly.

It felt like a very bad cold, but it’s much more than that.
Symptoms virtually gone, but terrible tiredness lingers.

I will test tomorrow and hopefully be negative. Very disappointed if it’s not, as I need to go shopping.
Taste and smell just coming back now after one week.

DSisters both had what they thought was a slight cold and cough 5 weeks ago. Both later tested positive. I visited and in same room for 2 hours but didn't catch it. Both v ill with severe chest infections, aching fatigue etc. DS1 had an infusion as ECV. which helped. Still can't taste or smell properly but that's slowly improving.
DGC visited age 7 with mum for the weekend. Friday night perfectly OK. Saturday afternoon not eating much and complaining of feeling sick and tummy ache but ok in half an hour. Sunday morning bad cold and temperature. Immediate positive result on LF test. They went home
Monday cold and temperature. Tuesday no symptoms LF negative. Back to school Thursday. Nobody caught it not me, OH, or their parents.
It's strange that I haven't caught it yet despite being in close contact with 3 people that had symptoms but didn't know at the time. OH hasn't caught it either and he goes to theatre, chess club, pubs, meetings etc.

I currently have a v bad cough but have been testing every other day and all negative. Went to a walk in clinic in the town where I am on holiday just to check I don’t have pneumonia or a chest infection (I didn’t). The nurse told me that the tests you buy over the counter don’t pick up the latest omicron variants - you need to order ones from the government website to be absolutely sure.

sazz1 Mon 25-Jul-22 15:23:04

Just to say both times I stayed home for 5 days after contact incase I caught it. Did lots of LF tests all negative and no symptoms.

I am pretty sure that nurse was talking rubbish there are only certain categories of people that can order tests from the government website. Most of us have to buy them from chemists ect.

I recently tested positive, ached all over, cough, felt dreadful but I am still feeling very tired. How long does this go on for? I am finally negative.

Greciangirl Mon 25-Jul-22 16:53:44

Diane7.

How long was it before you tested negative?

LynW Mon 25-Jul-22 16:56:43

Sorry you are still feeling so tired Diane7. Unfortunately there is no one answer to your question. The virus takes everyone differently - everyone will experience different symptoms, different levels of illness, from mild to severe, and how long it lasts will vary from person to person and also dependent on the variant you have. You just have to work with how you feel yourself and what’s best for your own recovery. Rest if you can and hope you feel better very soon.

Maybe the reason people are getting it worse is because protection from the vaccine has run out. We always knew the vaccine didn't last long due to the virus's damned ability to change all the time.

A vaccine like the measles vaccine can give you protection for years and years because the virus doesn't keep changing. Covid isn't like that. It keeps changing all the time, so the vaccine becomes less effective very quickly. I guess we are almost back to the same place as we were before the vaccines came out.

volver Mon 25-Jul-22 17:18:12

We most certainly are not almost back where we were before the vaccines came out.

Why do people write these sort of things which will just scare people and have no evidence to support them?

Whitewavemark2 Mon 25-Jul-22 17:22:25

I recovered from covid about a fortnight ago.

At the weekend we were invited to a big party - a dear friends 40th wedding anniversary.

This evening I am feeling like s…t. Hoping that it is just a bug as a result of my immune system being out for action during lockdown etc.

I shall test later.

Okay, maybe the last sentence was a supposition, but the rest is definitely true.

MaggsMcG Mon 25-Jul-22 18:42:41

We are nowhere near back to where we were. The TCells are still working. We might need a boost every year just like flu. Pfizer and Moderna are still working on an Omicron version too. Every time the virus mutates it has immune escape but vaccines still prevent most people from ending up in hospital or dead.

Perhaps. I get very annoyed with people who behave like Pte Fraser wink

True. But it’s worrying how many long term problems people seem to be suffering from.

Kate1949 Mon 25-Jul-22 18:51:27

We had it a couple of weeks ago. My symptoms were - two days of a splitting headache over my eyes. Then two days of feeling like I'd swallowed razor blades and difficulty swallowing. Then two days and nights of an awful cough. Then about 3 or 4 days of feeling nauseous. One day I had uncontrollable shivers. Could have been worse.

SueDonim Mon 25-Jul-22 19:13:19

DH and I had Covid for the first time about three weeks ago. He began with a scratchy throat and cough, then body aches and brain fog. He was mostly better after 72hrs although the cough lingered.

I started with the throat/cough 48hrs after him, had a monstrous headache for a day followed by a fever for three days. Then my nose blocked completely and I sneezed and sneezed. Next up was tired arms - tired arms! What’s that about?? One night I had a pain in my leg and was convinced I had a blood clot. hmm I then began feeling better but we both tested positive for ages.

GagaJo Mon 25-Jul-22 19:23:45

I don't think we had the current variant, when we had it in March. I think we had the previous one.

One of the symptoms that I had was horrific amounts of phlegm. Coughed up and blown from nose. And I speak as a life long sinus sufferer. Solid chunks (yuk, sorry! TMI I know).

I've not experienced that before.

Diane7 Mon 25-Jul-22 20:48:44

Thank you LynW. I tested negative 10 days after initially testing positive Greciangirl.

Saetana Mon 25-Jul-22 21:05:56

Coughing up blood is not normal - your friend should contact her GP as soon as possible.

GrammarGrandma Tue 26-Jul-22 08:42:13

I don't think we can have had the latest variant - which sounds ghastly - when we had it last month. I had cold symptoms for two weeks (minus the sore throat) and tested negative after the five days of isolation but I think I'd caught it four days before testing.

ExDancer Tue 26-Jul-22 09:00:23

My husband caught it, we think from attending a funeral, and just as he was getting better - I went down with it, but it was just a cold for me.
Then he seemed to relapse, started with sickness and horrendous diarrhea, more or less lost use of his legs and balance and finally his breathing was affected.
He took to his bed which is a first in 60 years we've been married, and our GP actually did a home visit.
She said she's convinced this varient seems able to search out the individual's weak spots and attack them. So we get all these different symptoms which are different for each patient.
Sounds a reasonable hypothesis.
