Stinking cough

I’ve never had a cough like the one I’ve got at the moment this is my 6th day and I’m still not able to function properly I just want to lay down all day and sleep. The pain has got a lot better now when I cough but I’m still coughing loads. I don’t have a runny nose or sore throat but I’ve been shivering so I expect I’ve had a temperature. Is this a chest infection? Is Bronchitis? Trying to get a doctors appointment is a no no. I’ve taken 2 covid tests it’s negative. I normally get a cough or cold but function fine I’ve never been bedridden before. My head if I’m honest feel wowsy all the time it’s horrible.

Sounds very like Covid . I wonder sometimes if those tests always show it up. In fact I know sometimes they don’t because a friend had several negatives on them and went and had one at one of those centres where she was actually positive. I mean the RAT tests, I am sure the other ones are accurate.

My family has had it. It's laid them low in bed.

Grandmabatty Sun 16-Oct-22 12:55:32

It definitely sounds like covid. I'm sure I had it earlier this year despite testing negative. Lots of fluids and resting. I hope you get better soon

I had a shocking head cold which started on 1st of october and developed into a bad cough which meant I was unable to lay down been really unwell.. done covid tests all negative.... still not okay.

I can hear my neighbour who’s had an awful cough for over a week now still coughing. He’s tested for covid and it isn’t he was so frustrated with his GP surgery he drove himself there on Fri day and insisted on being seen they weren’t happy but he was given antibiotics and and an inhaler.
He can’t go to work and said he’s never been laid low like this before.

It sounds like flu.

Beau1958 Sun 16-Oct-22 15:32:21

Yes it’s like the flu but without the aches and pains. Maybe at 64 a virus like this takes its toll. It feels definitely like a chest infection I was hoping someone with the same could tell me.

NotAGran55 Sun 16-Oct-22 15:37:56

It does sound awful Beau
Do you have anyone who can speak for you and call your GP in the morning if you aren’t any better?

MayBee70 Sun 16-Oct-22 15:45:59

You need to see a doctor. However can you try putting Vicks Vapor rub on the soles of your feet to help ease the coughing? I had a terrible cough a few years ago that lasted for weeks and the Vicks did help. My doctor refused to give me antibiotics but when I did eventually get some it cleared up straight away. I went to a walk in centre at one point because I’d been coughing all night ( it was even causing stress incontinence) . I was also coughing up blood But because (TMI alert!) my sputum wasn’t green they refused to give me antibiotics.

I feel really sorry for you Beau1958. My husband and I have both had exactly the same thing. Today is the first day in a fortnight we're feeling a bit better. We took Covid tests on day 2 - husband had it, I didn't. Only when I took a test on day 6 did it come back positive. Odd.

The coughing drove us mad, especially at night. It seemed to 'rattle' our heads. Honey and lemon in hot water, ibuprofen, cough sweets, lemon barley water and keeping very warm with hot water bottles seemed to help. Hope you're feeling much better soon.

My husband has just got rid of a terrible cough which he had for 6 weeks. He managed to get an appointment with our GP but by the time the appointment came around his cough had gone. He still went to be on the safe side. She said his chest was clear but that viral coughs can last for 6-8 weeks.

Polly99 Sun 16-Oct-22 20:42:32

My husband and I both had this at the beginning of September. Worst cough I have ever had. We both tested negative for covid. I managed to see my Gp who said it was viral so antibiotics would not help. Just advised rest and fluids and painkillers which I took for two weeks and was unable to do my usual childcare of dgcs. My cough was mostly gone after three weeks but dh's lasted about six weeks.

rubysong Sun 16-Oct-22 21:08:08

Same here. Headache, sore throat, runny nose, horrid cough, aching etc. DH tested positive on Thursday, I tested negative on Friday and Saturday. Hard to believe I haven't got it as our symptoms are the same. I have spent the last 3 nights in spare room and used a different bathroom. There doesn't seem much point doing the separating. DH is nearly better.

I’ve had this for about 3 weeks. Keeping me awake at night coughing. Tested umpteen times for Covid and all negative l

jeanie99 Sun 16-Oct-22 21:25:32

The beginning of September my husband and I started with a heavy cold and sore throat which went to a chest infection. Coughing for me was a racking cough bringing up so much mucus from nose and throat. I was very concerned when the mucus had blood in it from my throat and nose. At that point I went to see my GP who prescribed antibiotics. I have had some improvement no more retching when coughing and I am not waking in the night. I have to say I have never had a cough like this in fact I can't remember the last time I had a cold it must have been years ago. I don't have Covid done the test a couple of times, hubby as well.

My husband took three covid tests before he got a positive result. Keep taking the tests, it sounds like covid. He's negative again now but can't shake off the cough. I caught it from him and didn't have a cough at all. The symptoms vary from person to person.

Covid in the care home I work in,all staff and residents tested . I had three negative lateral flow test and also one negative PCR…

diygran Sun 16-Oct-22 22:28:19

I covid tested twice negative.
Really bad head cold to start and feeling 'out of it for two weeks. Last Tuesday the coughing started. Husband complained of lack of sleep so I moved into guest room.
The blocked nose and hacking cough with phlegm and blood spots had not cleared by Saturday so husband phoned NHS24. I had lost voice by now. The staff wrote an emergency prescription for an antibiotic from our local chemist.
I have a steam inhaler with menthol crystals, take hot lemon paracetamol drink and rub Vick on chest. Also strong throat lozenges are great to control the wretching. I slept better last night and hope to be free of this bug soon. Maybe not by Friday when supposed to get flu/covid vaccine! ?

rubysong Mon 17-Oct-22 22:30:44

Finally got a positive test this morning, after feeling grim since Friday and repeatedly testing negative. Now we've both got it (although my second line was faint) I can leave the spare room and go back to my own bed, and DH. He is on the mend and went for a walk. I feel a bit better but my ribs ache from coughing.

Shinamae Mon 17-Oct-22 22:35:52

According to my manager at work at the care home she says lateral flows do not pick up a small dose of the virus it’s the PCR that does that..

lemsip Mon 17-Oct-22 22:45:26

so what is a small dose. I have been really ill with heavy cold and cough for over two weeks no energy. lateral flow tests two days apart were negative.. I would have thought if it had been covid positive it would be classed as a big dose!

Doodledog Mon 17-Oct-22 23:13:57

I swear by inhaled Olbas Oil (a few drops in very hot water) for coughs and colds. Stick a towel over your head to make a tent, and inhale it for as long as you can. It really clears the airways, and helps you to sleep, as you aren't barking all night.

Do not put it on your pillow, or on a tissue in your pillowcase though (I have seen that recommended somewhere) as it smells sickly when it loses its potency, and you can't get rid of the smell.

A woman at work has all the symptoms and is really ill and not coming into work obviously but her lateral flow test is still saying negative, waste of bloody time if you asked me..

Doodle dog that reminds me of when I was young and mum did that tent thing with towels and some sort of inhalation stuff. Maybe friars balsam but I was too young to know what it was. Smelt a bit eucalyptus like.
