Just wondering if anyone has had this, I had never heard of it (heard of shin pads)!

Lately I have been uo and down long ladders , have had scaffolding up and been painting my rendering(at least doing it myself I know it's been done right)!

But after finishing last Thursday wuth the painting and up and down the long ladders, then had to go up another set to the higher platform. My shins have been excruicaiting, the pain from my knees down the front of my shins has been awful, keeping me awake at night, even at work I have had to ask to sit down at a checkout.

I have taken paracetomol and Ibroprofen but they don't seem to touch it. Just wondering has anyone else endure it and found anything to ease it.Ive done the raising my legs up, stretching them out etc.

Yes I have experienced this shin pain after diving for a long distance. I think it is the unusual stretching of tendons. And in my experience is one of the most painful of things that can go on for quite a while. Tendon breaks or soreness is very painful but it can heal given time. Rest and gentle exercise is the only thing you can do with pain relief too. Check out Google though to see if there is anything else you can do for relief. Meanwhile you have my sympathy. It is really a horrible pain. But it gets better in time

I get this too, all the time, even though I don't do anything madly energetic because I have quite bad M.E.

You might not want to hear it but rest and rest. I started a p/t job at a garden centre and was on my feet for a few hours a day on concrete, the pharmacist advised me to stop whatever I was doing that triggered it. I took a different job after a few weeks of rest, it went away, it is horrid.

I get a cramp like pain either side of my shins regularly it’s worse than cramp because you can’t bend it out (with most places you can bend the opposite way to relieve it) but with shins you can’t
It’s violent too never had it before this last couple of years it doesn’t seem connected to any exercise or standing and it’s often in bed
Horribly violent though

I get this sometimes if I have done a lot of walking on uneven surfaces .

Yes but the GP isn't interested.
I do need knee replacements so thought that was the cause. Or sciatica.

Ps I thought it was something only growing children got but the symptoms are similar.

Have you tried kneeling - not resting your bottom on your feet, but kneeling up in an L shape while pointing your toes. This stretches out the muscles down the front of your shins.. I used to find this gave me some relief after pounding London pavements in thin soled (high heeled) shoes.
Since I retired and practically live in trainers or very soft cushion soled shoes I have had no recurrence of the problem.

No Maw not tried that but will do in the privacy of my bedroom shortly.Doesn't help with the job I do now, which is work on the self seve checkouts, so I am walking back n forth on my shifts.

Will try the excersises and fingers crossed. Granc yes it is very painful, not had anything like this before.

Thanks all.

I am a keen hiker, if I do more than a couple of miles on road I can guarantee to have shin splints the following day.
I can do 12k plus on soft ground without a problem.
Good walking boots don’t seem to make any difference.

I got them from a Cross Trainer. So painful, put a stop to my plan gym sessions for quite a few weeks.
I found it difficult to shift.

I get this after exercise classes and walking long distances, although not as severely as you do, it’s still painful. The only thing that gives me temporary relief is the rub in ibuprofen gel, which I use on my shins before I go to bed, and keep by the bed in case it starts again during the night.

Yes this year for first time plus sciatica. I had increased my walking distance - all done on pavements. Took couple of months to get better. It was agony especially overnight. Gp not interested. Pharmacist suggested a tens machine which surprisingly helped. You tube had some good videos of exercises. I really hope it eases for you soon.

Callistemon21 Mon 24-Oct-22 22:03:27

I wonder if putting pressure on just part of your feet, climbing ladders, has caused it.
It's not a usual activity, presumably, bikergran.
Perhaps your feet have had unusual stress.

I hope it eases after you've finished doing that.

I get cramp like pain in the shins but a warm wheat bag placed on them gives almost instant relief.

When jogging became all the rage, it was quite common for people to develop shin splints. The treatment was rest and no jogging. Not a jogger myself (as if) but a couple of friends became clinically depressed by not being able to run - apparently all to do with endorphins released by exercise.
