November depressing month?

I find that every November I feel depressed and out of sorts. Anyone else feel like this too?My mood lifts a few days into December but it’s nasty while it lasts.

Yes, BrandyGran: I find it hard to get motivated to do anything. I just want to wrap myself in a blanket and hide. Thomas Hood’s poem says it perfectly for me.

No sun — no moon!
No morn — no noon —
No dawn — no dusk — no proper time of day?

No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,
No comfortable feel in any member —
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! —
November

Normally I would agree but we have had such lovely balmy days - sunshine, Autumn colours, mild temperatures that apart from the dark evenings, it is hard to believe it is November and not late September!

Yes! I normally struggle, but it's worse in November. I have to really push myself.

I love November. Cosy, peaceful, usually uneventful. Not too close to the Christmas rush. There are usually still lots of Autumn colours, and beautiful subtly coloured skies.

BrandyGran Sat 12-Nov-22 22:57:42

I can appreciate the beautiful autumnal colours but it’s a heavy suffocating feeling comes over me .

My heart lifts at the beginning of September with the first sign of Autumn and stays that way all the way through the winter months.

November is the month of remembrance which is bound to affect our mood.

Soon be Christmas. 🥳

M0nica

My heart lifts at the beginning of September with the first sign of Autumn and stays that way all the way through the winter months.

Mine too, M0nica. Unusual beings, I suspect.

I love it but we have a couple of familily celebrations this month which help.

I find the only problem is that it's getting near to Christmas. The older I get, the less I can be doing with all that nonsense. But however hard I try it's hard to ignore it altogether.

November though, cosy jumpers, hot chocolate, plenty of enjoyable jobs in the garden. Possibly one of my favourite months when I come to think about it.

I have my own , my partners and all my children's birthdays in November...so its always busy and we always go away for a few days ...so always goes by quickly for me

I think the lengthening hours of darkness is pretty depressing, coupled with the damn fireworks and then Remembrance Day. Those things make it all rather gloomy. Still, it cheers you up when we have a sunny day even if it is very short. However, this year it has been too warm which messes with nature and that is not good.

Gloomy rainy days, garden looking forlorn and dark evenings. Plus Christmas shopping early to avoid the madness and queues in December.

Doodledog Sun 13-Nov-22 07:42:35

I quite like November. I like the Autumn colours and the sense of winding down before the Christmas preparations. I’m less keen on January/February, when Christmas is over, it’s still cold and Spring seems a long way off.

RoseeLee Sun 13-Nov-22 08:23:34

Hi Brandygran, November is definitely my worst month. My mood starts to lift in January at the thought of Spring and the light returning.

Grannybags Sun 13-Nov-22 09:32:13

Normally the Black Dog is nipping at my heels by now but this lovely sunny weather seems to be keeping it at bay for now.

1st January is one of my favourite days!

karmalady Sun 13-Nov-22 09:37:39

Not depressing for me. I am a hibernator and find different things to do, I always try and get some light on my face as it helps form the feel-good hormones

My downfall as a hibernator is a tendency to eat in between meals. I need to fight that

Normally I can live with November, but I'm finding the current unseasonably high temperatures to be deeply worrying. Climate change very much in evidence, IMO.....

MiniMoon Sun 13-Nov-22 09:48:59

My mother had a name for this time of year. She used to say "these are the dark days before Christmas."
I don't mind November, my youngest sister and my son both have birthdays this month. What I don't like is having to close the curtains at 4pm. I love the long days and short nights of summer.

henetha Sun 13-Nov-22 10:53:59

I hate the dark evenings, but November is always a busy time for me doing Christmas shopping, so that helps keep me buoyant. January is when I sink into a depression.

Mollygo Sun 13-Nov-22 16:00:32

I don’t mind November. I can stop having to mow the lawn, and most of the leaves are off the trees and have been swept up out of the garden.
November in my part of England means dark evenings, but a whole range of weather, from cold, wet and dreary to warm sunny and ‘let’s go out without a coat’ days. I dislike January and February more.
Still, we’re nearly half way through November, so December will soon be here to cheer you up BrandyGran.
Blossoming I can still recite the whole of that poem by Thomas Hood, all these years later. Thanks for the reminder.

Brandygran I've just spent a very satisfying and relaxing afternoon working in the garden. It's been more like a warm spring day today. The birds were singing and everything felt peaceful. I hope you were able to spend restorative time in the open air. flowers

As soon as the leaves start falling my mood changes, I feel down, depressed even until the leaf buds start appearing on the trees and crocuses poke through the soil.

Kim19 Sun 13-Nov-22 17:03:04

November is only a difficult month for me temperature wise. Mildness has made this less difficult for me this year and I'm grateful

NotTooOld Sun 13-Nov-22 17:09:53

The darkening evenings can be depressing but we have had some lovely sunny days which have made me feel better. I really like the evening of Boxing Day when I can think thank god, that's Christmas over - spring is not that far away. I'm turning into a miserable old codger! grin
