Oh yes. The sooner the better but which knee first? Keep going with the exercises. You need to keep the muscles working and circulation going. You can do seated ones. I know how excruciatingly painful it is pre op. I used my NHS pension lump sum for my TKRs . It was worth it to me as it completely restored my mobility. Can you face a six more years like this?

Aveline you had private surgery in this country which is rather different from Lithuania, The problem is what would you do if anything went wrong? The NHS would be reluctant to take you on.

Do you have a surgeon? Are you on his NHS list? If so I would ring his secretary and say you are able to be admitted at short notice if eg there is a cancellation. I would ring fortnightly!

Oh yes. I would never have gone to another country for surgery. Good point.

Fflur why not speak to your Gp. Private hospitals have been picking up bread and butter operations from the nhs.
A number of us here have had their hips and knees done via nhs in private hospitals.
My surgery organised this after the local nhs hospital 'lost' or didn't get my GP referral. I was in agony so was grateful.
Keep doing the exercises if you can. It does help.

Thank you for your comments. The trouble is I wasn't put on the list until September last year so I'll definitely have a long wait and my knees have deteriorated so much in a few months.
As regards surgery abroad there are all sorts of horror stories about cosmetic surgery etc but this is not like that. I was told about it from a lady I became friends with and since then have met several people who had hips or knees done there. All have recommended it. The local papers, the Guardian and the BBC have done articles on the clinic and interviews where people describe their life before their surgery and how they have a new lease of life afterwards. There have been no negative reviews and if there had been I am sure the media would run with any shock horror stories.
My main worry is am I doing enough to keep my muscles strong enough for a good recovery. I do my daily exercises but most of the day I am sitting in the chair.

Reading another thread , someone posted a link to this one, which I wasn't aware if before, at least I font ghink I've seen it before. I'm going to have a read through, having been diagnosed with severe knee osteoarthritis a few months ago. It's nice to discover a little community of people with a common problem, all helping and advising and sharing experiences and "solutions"

Yes it was about this time last year that I first posted. I was in pain and knew I needed surgery so had lots of questions but didn’t know anyone who had had a new hip.
I found help and advice here from others who had gone through it already and can’t believe we are now on number 3, despite rarely appearing on the active list. Still don’t understand why, but that’s a question we have often asked.
I thank everyone for their input, it will have helped so many.

Madgran another thing we try to do for hips and knees is to keep costs to the minimum. eg a pair of elastic shoelaces are marginally cheaper than another pair of shoes!

We have advised buying 2 picker uppers but that is mainly for comfort and convenience.

Please ask any questions, no matter how daft they may appear. We have an answer for most things having been through the mill ourselves.

Thanks Charleygirl. I use Skechers a lot and certainly could get elastic laces for one pair I have, great idea.

Well, yesterday I saw the physio in our surgery as I was advised to see him rather than the GP . My other hip has been hurting for a while now and I thought maybe I should start the ball rolling for a replacement knowing the length of time it will be . I’m glad I did , the physio examined me and agreed that I have an arthritic hip and referred me for an X-ray. I was informed that the wait for a non urgent X-ray is about 4 weeks and then I will have to wait for the report to come back to the GP !! This is going to be a long haul I think 😕

Hi..I came on here mid-December when my TKR was cancelled the day before because of all the trauma work with falls on the ice and snow. I received so many helpful replies. I think it was Aveline who said I should think of next xmas when I’d be well-recovered and enjoying a new life.

A couple of weeks after xmas I had a call that my surgeon was on 6 weeks sick leave, could be longer, about 30 in my position and would I be happy to be picked up by another surgeon. I didn’t realise that when they have done so much pre-assessment and preparation they will want to get it done. So I was delighted a week later to be offered surgery in a different hospital on the 25th !!! Yes, please.

So here I am back home recovering. I think I was in a bit of a state and fainted after the spinal but after that everything was fine. I was worried about being on my own but I have received a council-run re-enablement package and am visited every morning by some really lovely ladies. Re slippers, I had gotten some very sensible slipper from Clarks (slipper socks in hosp) but with swollen feet it was a real struggle even with help. Carer mentioned slippers with Velcro everywhere and I remembered Cosyfeet ads and ordered and received next day. An absolute godsend. Start off loose, about right at lunchtime and so tight I pull off at teatime. Think name Emma?

Well, onwards and upwards. I did consider private but remembered little help on leaving after NHS in Private on hip 20 years ago. Couldn’t organise anything before but everything streamlined afterwards.

Many thanks for all your kind wishes in dark days of December when my foot had gone so far over I was unable to leave the house and manage even 2 blocks to local co-op!!!!!!!!.
