Hello 👋

Here is the new thread!
Thank you to regular and irregular posters all.

Especially those such as Silverling and Charleygirl who have provided so much advise and support. (There are lots of other lovely posters, but too many to list).

As well as advice, there is also much wisdom and kindness.

I will link to the first and second threads below.

Wherever you are on your replacement journey, you are most welcome to join us here smile

I finally have something to report. Ish.

The elderly person I know who I think I said needed both hips done - now they are saying just one. Dont know whether to be pleased or not.

The person rang up to be put on a cancellation list - and was told they are pretty near the top of the list anyway.
We dont know how that happened. We can only think it is because of her very advanced years?

We are not even sure if the receptionist got it wrong?
But I have told the lady to get her hospital bag packed. Just in case.

That’s good to hear. Hope it all goes well.

Thank you.

Hope recent patients are recovering.
One week on from my hip op’ I’m feeling good. Tired and still quite bruised ( I bruise easily).
Doing most things for myself , using a grabber and supervised by DH.
Doing basic exercises and building outside walks each day using crutches. Not sure how far but was out for 20 minutes today. A little discomfort , but 20 minutes more than I could do pre op!
I have up to knee stockings and daily anti clot injections. Pain killers are just Paracetamol an d Ibrofen, only about 4 of each in 24 hours. Very pleased with how things are going so far

Sounds good Jinny, only a week and a 20 minute walk.
It’s leaps and bounds from now on. Just don’t leap too high. 🫣

silverlining48 Wed 11-Oct-23 19:05:44

Sorry …Ginny 😕

silverlining48 Wed 11-Oct-23 19:07:31

Being vertically challenged I used to find it really awkward getting into or up onto my rather high bed.

downtoearth Thu 12-Oct-23 09:27:53

Silverlining I am also a shorta**e ,but the opposite problem my double bed is too low, difficult to get up from,so have changed rooms and sleep on the single divan in the smaller bedroom

Hello all, hoping for some advice on pain management as I know you’ve all been through it!

I had a TKR on Friday, and was discharged on Monday with paracetamol and ibuprofen. I can manage on these in the daytime but struggle at night and watch the hours ticking by until I can have my next pill, unable to sleep because of pain.
I’ve now been given codeine to help.

How did you distributed your tablets throughout the night for maximum benefit? My leg is more swollen and painful today, and I’m feeling a bit low and tearful about it all. Many thanks for any help and comfort.

silverlining48 Thu 12-Oct-23 16:25:37

Cygnet it’s quite normal to feel a bit down especially as it’s not even been a week. I know it feels longer but it’s early days.
If it’s swollen you need to get ice on It and keep it raised when you can.
The normal 2 painkillers should be enough but if you take codiene be very careful as it can cause bad constipation.
Try to spread the paracetamol etc out so you take the last dose aS late S possible before you go to sleep.
I have seen my neighbour through 3 new knees and know the first couple of weeks can be hard but the good news it. It will get better. Zflowers

silverlining48 Thu 12-Oct-23 16:29:32

As for neighbours 3 new knees. Seems excessive I know but she’s just plain greedy. two should suffice for most people.

silverlining48 Thu 12-Oct-23 16:31:24

Thought I would see if three posts get onto the active page, here we go. Post!

silverlining48 Thu 12-Oct-23 16:32:50

Well 8 on the list is better than morning
grin

silverlining48 Thu 12-Oct-23 16:34:35

Nothing not morning. Honestly! Fat fingers and predictable text are not good a good combination

Charleygirl5 Thu 12-Oct-23 16:50:27

Pleased to see we are back with "our" thread.

Pain following a knee replacement can be awful, I have been there x2. I have a friend who barely noticed he had had surgery.

All I can suggest is you experiment with drugs at night but do not take them on an empty stomach. It may be more comfortable if you put a pillow between your legs if you can sleep on either side. I promise you it will get better but unfortunately not overnight.

Cygnet Thu 12-Oct-23 18:03:14

Thank you both so much. I’m a bit more cheerful now-and pleased that I managed a short walk. I’ll up the icing and try to stick to one codeine a day. I’m already feeling some unwanted effects!
I’m puzzled that this really useful thread doesn’t get on to the active list- how will anybody see it?

Charleygirl5 Thu 12-Oct-23 18:23:12

silverlining and I have always thought we must be second class citizens!

We are here if you want to ask any questions.

silverlining48 Thu 12-Oct-23 22:45:21

tiredoldwoman Fri 13-Oct-23 07:34:31

Back at the top of the list , Silverlining48 !
I hope you had a good sleep , pain that keeps you awake makes it a long lonely night ! I preferred ice to painkillers , it worked best for me and I didn't feel woozy , living alone I needed to be alert ! 3 years on I still love and marvel at my new knees .
Knees up Mother Brown !

tiredoldwoman Fri 13-Oct-23 07:37:47

Cygnet and Ginny, too !

grannysyb Fri 13-Oct-23 08:11:29

Had xray in May, saw consultant end of August, now have a date of 16th November. However, the mantra at this stand alone NHS unit is "in for a knee, out for tea!" However if you're on the afternoon list you stay in overnight. I shall be going to my daughters for a couple of weeks afterwards as my DH wouldn't be able to cope, I'm quite happy to do this.

silverlining48 Fri 13-Oct-23 08:21:00

Not too long a wait now syb, and you will be feeling a new woman before you know it.
Do keep in touch there is always help and encouragement available here.
