Thinning Hair

As I am post menopause I find that my hair is thinning at quite a rate and has become limp so I need a really good cut. My grandmother lost a lot of hair yet my mum had thick hair in old age. A small problem in the great scheme of things but wondered how other Grandnetters dealt with their hair. Thank you.

I think I'd have the confidence to go out in a topper. (And clothes, obviously!) smile

I got mine from this shop, it’s not far from me.
I got it in 2020. We did a FaceTime where she showed me lots of wigs where I chose 6 to try.
My daughter came with me. I wasn’t over the moon with any I’d chosen so my daughter went looking round the shop and found exactly what suited me. I was so over the moon that I wore it home.

Hats with hair are a thing
www.headcovers.com/wigs/hats-with-hair/

The fringe thing they sell looks great. I could grow out what little fringe I have so I can cover my crown more and pop on a false fringe. Thanks for that I’ll send away for one.

Here’s Connie That was her name in the shop.

You can buy toppers with longer strands at the back, so they blend in with your own hair.
Handy to merge the colours.

MissAdventure Tue 13-Dec-22 12:38:17

When the weather's better, if I can, i will try and visit that shop, meryl. smile

Are the staff nice?

I feel embarrassed.

Michael Roberts is very good. We recommend him to our chemo patients.

On inspection of Fanny Cornforth's recommendation of the website wigs with hats, I realised a major problem with thinning hair is the wispy fringe and receding hairline. If you look at the website Fanny recommended you will see that baseball caps do what the fringe did, hide a receding hairline. I expect it's possible to buy very lightweight and cool baseball caps.

I have a headband wig. The band covers up a multitude of sins.

The colour is ok on it, but I look as if I'm going to start belting out "total eclipse of the heart".

Realised it’s shipped from America. Does it take long to arrive?

MissAdventure Tue 13-Dec-22 13:19:45

Oh, mine came from amazon, so not long at all.

I started a thread on this a while ago and got some very helpful advice. I have been taking collagen and fish oils and using Viviscsl shampoo and conditioner. But I think the biggest difference if I’m honest has been that I now style my hair differently and have moved my parting so the hair goes over the thin area on my crown a bit more, bit like a balding man’s comb over! It does help though and copious amounts of hairspray hold it in place. I’ve also had my hair cut quite short so the thinning at the sides is less obvious.

Don't be embarrassed re the staff MissA. I am completely bald apart from a few wisps at the back. Where I go to have my hair system fitted, the staff have seen it all. They are kind and sympathetic.

Years ago a friend of my mothers lost a lot of her hair following an illness.

She was told to rub bay rum onto her scalp. I think this is an old remedy as this was 50 years ago now.

Her hair did grow back quite thickly. Whether it was the bay rum or just coincidence, I don't know.

Also, I am considering stopping dyeing my hair. I have done loads or 'research' on this. Lots of women say that when they have ditched the dye, their hair has grown through much thicker and stronger than when they were dyeing it

MissAdventure Tue 13-Dec-22 15:04:17

My mum used to put bay rhum on my hair when I was little.

MerylStreep Tue 13-Dec-22 15:20:25

MissA
They are lovely people.
When your ready I’ll take you there. I’ll tell you the truth Re what it looks like 😄

MissAdventure Tue 13-Dec-22 16:51:22

Ooh thank you!
smile I'm sure I can trust you to tell me I look like a (hairy) idiot, if I do.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 13-Dec-22 17:06:02

Yes I do think that you need someone to tell the truth abou5 how it looks.

MissAdventure Tue 13-Dec-22 17:11:37

Oh yes, I think perhaps it needs a woman's eye on the details, too. (Sexist, probably, but I'm feeling reckless)
Plus it seems less daunting when there's two of you.

Post chemo my hair growing back ..think Judi dench but the “fringe” bits stubbornly won’t get longer.

Bay rum ? Champs serum ? Or black caster oil ? (Is that’ safe.,!)

Votes please ?

Hi Lucca I think that the front of one’s hair is the trickiest area to grow.
I lost my thick fringe in my early 20s, no idea why. It has never returned.

If I were you, I’d try minoxidil. (Regaine and others)
It’s quite messy and sticky, but won’t be noticeably so as your hair is short. Put it on at night.
It’s the only thing proven to work.

Good luck!

Caleo Sun 18-Dec-22 12:37:41

Same here, Fanny. I have combed forward more and more hair from the top of my head as my hairline recedes and thins, cutting 'fringe' short enough to stay out of my eyes.

I keep the hair at the back top of my head long to add to bulk at the back and nape, and I now use volumising stuff from John Frieda.

Chemists won’t sell it to you if you’re over 60 ( or 65?) so have to get someone to buy it for me. I did see some on the internet which I might send away for. The Regaine mousse is very sticky but does thicken the hair. It does lower blood pressure so if you’re on any sort of medication for that sort of thing you shouldn’t take it. I’m not sure if it works for me or not: scared to stop using it although my hair is getting thinner and thinner.
