No but I await comments with interest because I have the same issue. Maybe it’s our Australian water with the fluoride in it ? Mine don’t peel but they are very brittle and break off all the time. I have to keep them very short. I can’t stand wearing rubber gloves and I do a lot of washing, gardening etc. so maybe that’s why?

I have never had nails because they flake off and are sometimes broken right down to the quick and they often bleed. I am at a loss, too. I use creams and oils and always apply hand cream. I take vitamin D and B12. I buff them and file them carefully with a glass file if they ever get long enough.

They are better in the summer but come 1 September ( that would be 1 March for you I suppose) they all start breaking off and by Christmas they are back to a bleeding mess.

I have spent loads on various treatments, strengtheners, clear varnishes, powders, creams and gadgets but it's the same every year.

The vitamin D has worked, but only on my hair which has become thicker, stronger and curlier since I started using it.

Oh yes and I always wear gloves - rubber gloves for cleaning and latex gloves for cooking and finer work.

Vitamin D
Collagen (in liquid or tablet form)

I was massively Vitamin D deficient a few years back.
It came up during a routine blood test.
I had to have a big loading dose prior to taking the over the counter stuff.
Before that my hair was falling out to a troubling degree.

I had this problem and started taking Perfectil tablets - nails much improved.

Eating an extra egg per week cures mine. So two eggs a week instead of one.
A medical friend eats jelly. She says it is the gelatine we need.

Jelly sounds good- I could go that one. Worth a try . I’ve never heard of those tablets, either. They might go under another name here perhaps ?

I hoped vit D would help my thinning hair , alas it continues to fall out , but my nails have improved amazingly !

I started taking collagen and biotin because I was losing my hair. Eventually prolonged stress plus my health problems meant my hair couldn't be saved, but I have nails of steel - so strong and incredibly fast-growing that I'm always having to file them down.

I have been using Natures Cure Collagen Hydrolysate Powder (available Amazon) which mixes into a glass of water and is tasteless.

Lifetime problem for me, So, wanted lovely long nails - For a short time as a teenager I trained as a manacurist - but my nails always looked horrible. Tried everything - including actually chewing daily cube of jelly (for gelatine) Ugh!!!! and made no difference.

Strangely enough each of my four pregnancies resultd in stronger long growing nailes - within a few days of birth they all broke down to the quick and I was back to normal. So, what was different during those months I still do not really know.

However, after a rather nasty spinal stress fracture I was put nto Alendronic Acid by my GP for suspected Osteoporosis. Within a few months I noticed the difference in my nails, so much stronger and better. Not perefect, but definitely a great improvement over previos many decades.

PS. I always wear rubber gloves for any chores.

I can't vouch for eggs but my G'Aunt used to eat half a cube of unmadeup jelly every day for her nails - and they were very strong right into her 90's. Maybe coincidence but worth a shot?

It would need to de ordinary jelly I think for the gelatin rather than a vege-gel.

I take Holland and Barrett’s Hair, Skin and Nails supplement and it’s great.

Sarah75, those tablets don’t seem available here but I will keep looking.

This is what’s in them - might find something similar

Vitamin E capsules in gelatin. I don't know whether it was the vitamin E or the gelatin that did it (both are said to be good excellent for nails) but mine are better than they have ever been.

I also have this problem. I have been taking Vitamin D supplements for a couple of years now which seem to have helped a bit

I also started using Rimmel Nail Nurse. If I use it regularly it does protect my nails from splitting due to dryness, being in water too much, gardening etc. without gloves. It has a plastic kind of feel but it doesn't peel off like some.

I stopped using it before Christmas and my nails started flaking again. In the new year I resolved to take better care of my nails and use the Nail Nurse properly. My nails are now growing and not splitting.

My nails had become ridged and bumpy. I took vitamin D and a Wellwoman 70+ multivitamin tablet daily. My nails have improved, although still somewhat ridged, they are no longer bumpy. I still take the multivitamin daily. I stopped taking the vitamin D because I couldn't find them in the shops. This was at the height of the pandemic so now perhaps I'll be able to buy them again.

Interesting.
Same problem for years. I retired two years ago and hoped this would help (healthcare always hand washing).
However it didn’t.
I also am hypothyroid been on thyroxine since my 20s.
I am on my second lot of collagen and I truly think I’ve finally found something that works.
I’ve tried all the usual things before this, jelly cubes, perfectil.
Anyhow another bonus is people keep mentioning how nic3 my hair is looking 🤷‍♀️ didn’t see that coming!

Franbern Fri 06-Jan-23 10:27:44

As I said in earlier post - I tried this eating cube of jelly daily - did it for a year, not difference to my nails. As I normally eat a dozen eggs each week - I can say that those make no difference either.

Only things that ever did for mine was being pregnant (!!!) and the Alendronic Acid. Normal Adcal D Vit tablets had no effect.

I have thick hair and pretty strong bones - so really do no know exactly what is missing that only effects my nails.

harrigran Fri 06-Jan-23 10:27:52

I have this problem and can not see any improvement in the condition of my nails. I have a good diet, take vitamin D tablets and use expensive hand cream every day.
I wondered if mine was a result of chemotherapy as I lost some toenails during treatment.
