Need help from a nurse

For some years I have had a small black lesion on the side of my nail on the middle toe of my left foot. It has been very tiny but grew a bit recently. IN the middle of the night last Wednesday it must have caught on something (I have fleece sheets) and it woke me in a cute pain. When I put my leg out of the bed it was bleeding - a lot! - I am on an anticoagulant and it poured over the carpet.

It was a great challenge as I have had a disc op and have a painful hip replacement, so bending is a very difficult. I eventually managed to staunch the flow by putting a large wodge of tissue on a grabber and pushing hard on my foot. With great difficulty I got a plaster on it and I have had it on ever since. I am hoping to get it off somehow this morning and try and see what is going on.

Ideally I would soak it in some salt water to keep it sterile, then replaster it if needs be. But it is very difficult to do and if it starts bleeding like it did before I will be in a pickle.

I actually think the lesion itself needs looking at, but no point at the moment as it will be surrounded in scab. I am imagining myself saying to the receptionist on the other end of the phone that I need someone to dress my toe - you have to be dying to get an appointment for major problems!

I am about to sally forth to the bathroom to see what I can do. Things are further compounded by not being able to see it in detail - no part of my varifocals seems to get it in focus. Time I was recycled I think!

Whiff - I am sorry for your dreadful experiences, and thank you for your kind advice.

Ring 111 and tell them what you have posted here. They will get a medical practitioner to do a video call and they'll guide you on what to do next

Sorry but now I have this picture of you reclining in your chair with your foot on the keyboard so the doctor can see your foot 😁😁

I'm sorry this has happened and frightened you as well as the mess an inconvenience good advice here about getting it seen especially as you are on anticoagulents. If you can get a family member or friend to to a firm tight dressing on it to stop the bleeding overnight (and mucking up the bedclothes and the carpet put a sock over that and ring up first thing. Probably nothing to worry about but the ACs make matters worse and messy. Let us know how you get on.

grin I'm sure you can just do it on a phone and just put your phone on reverse and show your foot..even if you are in bed smile

Please see someone very quickly Luckygirl, i don’t want to be a scaremonger but I knew someone with a black mark on his toe and he is no longer with us.

So sorry Luckygirl. It must be upsetting (and frustrating) dealing with a sudden medical problem alone, somewhat incapacitated and in the night. Of course you are never alone with GN and it’s helpful to share concerns. I guess posters have confirmed what you thought, that it is necessary to get checked as soon as you can.
Big hugs.

Moles don’t just vanish so rule those out. Logically it’s as you suspect - a blood blister or similar.

Farzanah Sat 21-Jan-23 21:03:01

I’m sure you’re glad of support on here Lucky but only a doctor can diagnose when he sees you. Hope all is well.

I get blood blisters since going on blood thinners for a heart condition they only last a day and just disappear back into my system never had one burst. Luckygirl needs to see a doctor and get the area tested.

Moles can just vanish. I had 2 on my back, they were looked at by a specialist and he told me they were benign and there was a high possibility that they would drop off or be rubbed off when I dried myself. He was right about 6 months later there were no moles.

Spice101 where your moles black ? And did they change shape or bleed ? Black marks ,moles ,lesions that are black ,change shape or bleed need to be biopsied.

Any joy from your GP, Luckygirl?

Luckygirl3 Tue 24-Jan-23 18:25:40

Spoke to receptionist yesterday; sent a photo to surgery; GP rang this morning and asked me to come in; went to surgery at lunchtime and she is uncertain as to what it is - could be a persistent scab or something untoward - she has referred me to dermatology and I will be seen within 1-2 weeks. Bingo!

Septimia Tue 24-Jan-23 18:30:47

That's probably the hardest part over Luckygirl! I hope that it will prove to be possible to deal with whatever it is without too much trouble.

ExDancer Tue 24-Jan-23 18:37:57

Its now 24th Jan and you posted this 3 days ago. I hope by now you've been seen by a medic. What was the outcome?

Luckygirl3 Tue 24-Jan-23 18:38:41

Thank you for asking - see above.

ExDancer Tue 24-Jan-23 18:38:55

Ignore me - didn't read far enough.

Iam64 Tue 24-Jan-23 18:39:08

Keep us updated lucky

JaneJudge Tue 24-Jan-23 19:09:52

1-2 weeks to see dermatology is a miracle smile I hope it's nothing too bothersome x

Luckygirl3 Tue 24-Jan-23 19:25:47

Thank you. I am not very worried about it - I am sure it will be something simple.

Whiff Tue 24-Jan-23 20:24:07

Luckygirl I am very glad you are seeing a dermatologist. And that you have a good GP who has acted quickly.

Luckygirl3 Tue 24-Jan-23 20:40:28

Thanks Whiff - she has no idea what it is but has done all the right things.
