Ramipril Side Effects Increased Dose - Dizziness etc

3 weeks ago my dose was increased from 2.5 mg to 5mg. (Had been on 2.5mg for a long time without any problems other than a cough sometimes.)
Next stay started with dizziness - felt like sea sickness. After a few days it started to improve so when had check with nurse said I thought it would all be fine.
Unfortunately it came back and now 3 weeks on I'm still having problems. I was keen to keep going with it as I'm aware that all of the BP medications can have side effects.
Just wondered if anyone else had this and it did eventually ease.
Need to be careful turning head quickly. Difficult scrolling through pics / videos on phone and also is anything with lots of movement on TV. General light headedness etc.
(There didn't seem to be much change in BP for first two weeks but that has improved in last week.)
I'm due to have the standard blood test later this week just to double check no impact on kidneys etc.
Feeling like a lightweight as so many people seem to not have problems with this dose.

Sorry meant to add - dull headache too.

Your dizziness may be due to the increase in your dose of Ramipril, but it may also be due to other problems and its starting at that time might just be coincidence.

The symptoms you describe are similar to ones I had (and I'm not on any medication) and so did other people I've heard of. The cause in most of those cases has been connected with ear problems.

Go back to your GP and ask for further investigations.

I have been on 10mg of Ramipril once a day for years . I was fine on them from the start they improved my blood pressure. Because of PAF I take my BP everyday .

Have you had your BP taken since the dosage increase. If not you need to have it done incase it's lowered your BP to much hence the side effects.

I’ve had years of problems settling with a blood pressure medication, eventually settling on Losartan as it caused lesser effect. However, after Covid I developed yo-yoing blood pressure and began the game again, now taking Losartan 100mg, Indapamide 2.5mg and Spironolactone 25mg. And still not entirely stable.
My message is to not to try to tolerate something that has side effect. I know well that many GPS will be resistant to prescribing something more expensive than the big-standard starter drugs. Keep complaining until something that suits you is found.

I was on Ramipril but suffered a persistent cough. There are other medications out there to replace it, you don't have to put up with these problems. Talk to your consultant or doctor about swapping. I have had no problem with new medication.

Thank you for all the replies - really appreciated. Ive got a BP machine at home so have been able to check it. Its improved slowly but hasn't gone really low at any point so I don't think thats the reason.
Because it also started almost immediately after changing the dose my assumption was that its definitely that - but good point that should keep an open mind on that. (I hadnt been expecting any side effects because I didnt have any with the lower dose.)
Interesting that no-one else has said they had the same heady/vision problems with ramipril.
Sorry for all the problems you've had @ExperiencedNotOld trying to find a one without issues.

I would think it is the Ramipril increase making you feel as you do. This happened to me when I had to increase my Bisoprolol dosage. The nurse I spoke to said to increase gradually - 1/2 a tablet one day, then one tablet, then 1/2 again til it was ok. But as others have said, best to speak to your GP - there may be other meds you can try that you would tolerate better. I take Ramipril 2.5 and it’s ok for me.

Thank you Sarah75 - I was ok on the 2.5mg too. Its odd its had such a big impact going up to 5.

Merlin333 - do you mind if i ask how long you stayed on the ramipril for? I hope your doctor can suggest another one for you.

When I took ramipril I had the “ramipril cough”, went to GP who changed the med from an ACE inhibitor to Candesartan which works in a different way but does the same.
I think ramipril is cheaper and this why it’s the first choice even though the “cough” is a well known side effect.

I also have the Ramipril cough and I also suffer from dizziness. I cannot turn around quickly or I would be so dizzy I would be on the floor.
I get out of bed slowly for the same reason. Turning my head quickly nm makes me feel dizzy but as I am aware of the signs I live with it. I am on the maximum dose and the only reason my GP decided to do it was that she thought I was sensible, which I am and I do not take any risks.

So common that cough..plus your right cheapest option.
I was on a long haul flight, the lady behind me coughing all the way home. Drove me mad, goodness knows how she felt.
Once landed she got my attention and said she was so sorry about the cough.. I asked her was she on Ramipril, yes she answered. I told her see GP, that should solve the problem.

@Charleygirl5 sorry you are having dizziness too. Is it all of the time or just when you move?

Charleygirl5 Tue 14-Feb-23 21:58:51

lovelylovely with me it is sudden movements. Usually I am prepared but there is the odd once or twice. I am so fortunate I do not suffer from dizziness all of the time- I really would be seeing my GP if that were to happen.

I really do not recommend this old age lark, I was fine even in my 50's.
