Leg suddenly gives way when walking.

This happens occasionally and is alarming. Does anyone know what causes it?
A few moments later and strength is regained.
It's always on my right side and I am on a waiting list long for a new right hip so wonder if the leg suddenly giving way is related to the arthritis.

I have this with one knee and never go down the stairs without holding onto the bannister. I also have pain in my hips and lower back so who knows what the main cause is.

This happens with me and its definitely my back and severe sciatica caused when I had spinal compression. Its never really got better.

Oh I am so sorry bigbertha and Sparklefizz.
I see a chiropractor regularly and he sent me for an x-ray. The x-ray showed I have no cartilage on my right hip so the only cure is surgery.
The waiting list is 2 years plus. I think I have waited the plus!
Osteoarthritis. sad

I have this occasionally. It is likely to be your hip.
I am due a "new" one too.

Oh dear Grammaretto.
I hope you can get surgery soon. It wouldn't hurt to keep chasing up. flowers

This happened to me a few years ago and I worked out I had a torn meniscus which was operated on and solved the problem. Now I have two new knees that problem does not occur but it can do apparently.

Just be extra careful going up and down stairs and make sure there is something to which to hang on if entering shops with a small step.

It can be alarming, sympathies Grammaretto. I have it mainly on the left side and have been told it is due to spinal stenosis which is common in us oldies. I have been doing the prescribed exercises and am careful not to walk too far at one time which has reduced incidence considerably.

Yes, it happened to me several times. (I had a THR last year)
About 8 years ago (early 40s) it gave way and I fell down the stairs.
I literally nearly broke my neck on the tiled floor, and totally smashed in my front teeth.
I don’t want to scare you - but please be careful!

grandmarettoI think it is probably your arthritic hip , before I had a hip replacement my leg used to “give way” without warning. I did use a stick when out as was really worried about falling.
Now my other hip is beginning to feel a bit the same although strengthening exercises at the gym seems to be helping . Hope you get the hip done soon it’s life changing.

Oh how awful Fanny have you recovered? So young too.

I feel embarrassed complaining. I am careful but i shall be even more so now.
I use walking poles.
I have fallen and broken my wrist twice but years ago so I have learned to be cautious.

I’m waiting for a hip replacement and I get the same problem.

I have osteoarthritis and this happens to me. I'm always worried I will slip in the shower and not be able to get up.

Charleygirl5 Sat 01-Apr-23 14:23:16

biglouis that is the reason when I had my shower fitted I bought an adjustable stool on Amazon and I could not have coped without it. Also from Amazon, I bought a non-slip mat for use inside the shower because I could not trust the supposed non-slip shower base.
