I am sure this has come up before ….I recently had a total knee replacement and recovery is as expected, however since the surgery i have been plagued with restless legs. No sleep at all last night. Ive have been told the drug gabapentin helps but am reluctant to take another medication. Would welcome any thoughts

Magnesium is best cure for restless legs.

The agitation is a result of magnesium deficiency.

It is easy to buy. I hope you will be able to test it for yourself. It works for me and friends I have recommended this to.

Indian tonic water - drink half a glass (or more) at bedtime. You need to do this for a couple of weeks, before it takes effect. Solved my RLS .

I use a homeopathic remedy called Rhus Tox 30c. It works within 15 minutes and I keep some by the bed. Available health stores and Amazon.

Be aware that high doses of Magnesium can cause diarrhoea.

Sparklefizz - thanks. I have ordered some Rhus Tox 30c. Do you take it regularly or just when the RLS starts up?

No, not regularly.
Take one at the very first sign of symptoms and let it dissolve in the mouth, and take another one or two if necessary.
You can't overdose.

Thanks, Sparkle. My order arrived yesterday and I shall try it at the first opportunity - probably this evening!

Rhus Tox worked amazingly well for my SinL, but not as well for my DH. Still it’s cheap as chips and worth a try as long as it doesn’t ‘mess’ with your other meds - maybe check with GP.

My legs start off feeling like I have an alien in each one. Fasiculation (a brief spontaneous contraction affecting a small number of muscle fibres, often causing a flicker of movement under the skin). I have this after walking, or indeed any exercise. It's worse at night and builds up to excruciating cramp if I don't rearrange my body! It's not only in my calves but in my thighs and feet too. Fingers are also affected after trying to tighten or undo things. I'm on gabapentin but in makes me tired and I feel I've lost my sparkle. I'm 69 years young. Just started taking Andrews liver salts with has magnesium in. I've taken magnesium tablets before but not much good. Low dose of amitriptyline taken at 7pm has helped. All advice gratefully accepted.

I've just started using Magnesium spray on my legs at night. Seems to be working, and helps with sleep too.

Gabapentin helps but makes me sleepy so I've changed to pregabalin. Have only taken it for two weeks so it's early days. Good luck.
