Blooming hip again!

As some will know from previous posts I have a problem hip replacement. It is nearly 9 years since it was done, and it was a problem from the start. I woke up with a new pain in my groin that had not been there before and it has continued to get worse ever since. I am now in the situation where I cannot lie on the bed and lift my leg straight or bend my knee. This is both because of pain and muscle weakness. I am in a lot of pain getting in and out of the car. I have to lift my leg in and out.

I walk with a stick, and the pain is not too bad then - I am not trying to lift my leg all that much when walking, so it is tolerable - the stick is because the weakness impairs my balance and I have breakages in my other foot.

Saw consultant again on Monday - once again the x-rays look fine. .... which is good. But I am still left with no explanation for the pain. They have ruled out a tendon problem.

My instinct, as a lay person, is that a nerve is being tweaked. That is certainly how it feels. Consultant is going to talk to a specialist in hip revision surgery - but I really really do not want this if it can be avoided.

I feel I am at an impasse.

Luckygirl there is a possibility that some but not all of the pain is coming from your back.

I am pleased to hear that you are going to have a second opinion but when will that be?

Do you have any pain radiating down your leg or is it more static in your groin?

Ugh! I'm so sorry they have not been able to help you more, Lucky. It sounds like a totally frustrating impasse. Constant pain is so debilitating flowers.

I’ve had what the doctors have called groin strain for over 20 years. . I’m now suffering from arthritis in my knee and hip. The pain in my groin is unbearable. Apparently they’re not sure what’s causing it. I also keep falling. At least once a week. Walking with a stick also. I’m only 65! I’m having acupuncture once a week which appears to be reducing the pain. It’s costly though. There’s a 15 week wait for physio. They’ll only give be exercises to do and I’m doing those already. Hey ho xx

I would definitely plump for a nerve being trapped or damaged in the operation and it would not show up in any X-rays Luckygirl

The pain is in the front/inner side of groin and radiates for about 8 inches down inside of thigh. It is in exactly the same position and radiation as it was when I woke from the surgery all those years ago.

Consultant was most insistent when I asked that pain is definitely from hip and not from back, where I have had a disc removed.

Lucky I am afraid that you desperately need a revision hip to untrap the nerves which must have been squashed if the pain has not changed.

There does not appear to be any sensible answer. I hope you are referred to somebody you can trust.
