Can you smell but not be aware of it?

Is it possible to smell but not detect it yourself? I ask because when I stay overnight at my sons house to babysit, he has started hurrying to the room I use, to open both velux windows and one other before he thinks Ive noticed. I visited my second son this week and he appeared to hold his breath before hugging me. I shower or bathe every day, wash clothes thoroughly and often, and take dental hygiene seriously with regular checkups. What's going on?

I don't think that you can smell yourself, sadly, it would be easier if we could!
My husband can get a bit niffy, I think he doesn't wash his hair enough. I used to have to wrestle his fleece from him when I wanted to wash it but I have now got a few of them, all roughly the same age, so he can't tell them apart.
My father had a great fear of being a smelly old man, but sadly only lived to 60.
I got some sheets out the other day that I hadn't used for ages and they didn't smell nice, not musty just slightly sour if that makes sense? It was a big heavy cotton duvet and I did wonder if it was the smell of stale fabric conditioner.

There was a thread about this before, it’s a real thing 2-nonenal
The persimmon soap smells…. soapy? Fresh but not fruity or flowery. I purchased some when this was last mentioned.
I enclose a screenshot from Wikipedia, sorry not great with links.

Ask a close friend!

Does somebody here have shares in the soap?

Yes, I wondered that! The company won’t know what’s hit their stockroom after this thread!

Welshy, it could well be diet. Onions, spices, garlic and alcohol cause smelly breath - and maybe body odour too. I'm sure that stress makes people smelly - as it definitely does with animals.

I'm vegan and eats lots of green vegetables (containing chlorophyll) so that should help neutralise odours. I can always tell if somebody has been eating fish.

Persimmon is a nice clean smell not really perfumed more like, say grass or a natural smell.

4allweknow Wed 06-Sept-23 16:18:25

Very difficult to detect your own bad breath unless you specifically seek to do it. Regular cleaning doesn't always prevent it, could be a gum issue, leaky filling. Check that first before you start trying to figure out any other smell.

I don't know if anyone else has metioned this as I've not read all the posts sorry. But could it be your breath smelling rather than body? I have noticed that with several people.

I tend to be prone to UTIs - would the persimmon soap be ok does anyone know?

Hetty58 Wed 06-Sept-23 15:42:47

Rive gauche? (awful)

caz6853 Wed 06-Sept-23 15:37:13

I’ve noticed a lot of older women go for the same perfume don’t know what it is but it’s just awful you can smell it a mile away and know just who is there!

Hetty58 Wed 06-Sept-23 15:19:03

Oh dear - I do tend to fling the windows open when I have visitors - because Covid is still around - and there's increasing case numbers in this area.

I'm just trying to look after people, so I hope they don't think that they smell!

Just was reminded about the joke about second opinions at the doctor's- lab work and cat scan smile

The Japanese soap looks lovely. I shall add it to the next amazon order.
Coffee breath is always a worry for me. Mints help....hopefully.

I think you must ask your sons. I expect you are worrying unnecessarily, but you will never know.
I certainly smelt different when undergoing chemo and also before I was diagnosed. I expect a sniffer dog would have sniffed me out. Every GP should have one.

It is an interesting subject. I know I loved my husband's smell when I first met him and disliked some other men's smells. I don't mean aftershave, just his smell. Very important.

A lady, speaking to Dr Johnson, said ' You smell'. He replied, ' No, Madam. I stink, you smell'.

Smells can be very evocative can't they.

One of my earliest memories as a child was being allowed to have my afternoon nap in my grandmothers bed. Crisp white lace trimmed bed linen, made by my grandmother and scented with lavender.

My Grandma always smelled of Imperial Leather 🙂

We had a new washing machine and after a while I realised the clean laundry wasn't very fresh.
I decided it was a combination of things: a bigger drum so it needed more detergent, an eco programme which I read doesn't actually get up to the temperature selected, and a short programme which I've realised is too short for a proper clean of everyday clothes.
I also remove the drawer every day and leave the door open so it can dry out and air.

How long have you had your Chanel No5? After a couple of years, perfume will go stale and smell awful, but other people notice it more than you would. My husband used yo insist on wearing a bottle of after shave he’d had for over 4 years and it smelled awful, musky and stale. He insisted it was fine, but I had to throw it away in the end as I was worried for him! Would you still smell of perfume when you see your sons?

If you are concerned about the smell of your urine being offensive then peppermint capsules can sort that out. Your wee will smell minty, I found that out when I took Colpermin for my IBS. 😉

Googled the soap and it seems any anti-bacterial soap could be effective.
Here’s an article about old-age smelling. Enlightening. 🤔😳 www.franklinpark.org/blog/old-people-smell#:~:text=The%20best%20way%20to%20minimize,acids%20and%20minimize%20their%20impact.

I’ve ordered the soap, too!

I remember using public toilets after elderly ladies when I was a little girl and noticing a characteristic smell. Not toilet-related, but peculiar and slightly unpleasant. I must have mentioned it to my Mum and she said it was just because they were older.
I dread a little girl following on from me…

DerbyshireLass Wed 06-Sept-23 14:31:46

Yes, I bought the soap. I don't think I smell "old" but at 72 I may well do.......lol.

I must admit I am a fresh air fiend and I hate bad odors. . I open all my windows for at least half an hour every day.

My son did once did tell me my breath smelt one day, so now I am quite fanatical about my teeth cleaning regime although on that particular day I did have an upset tummy (IBS) so that could have been the culprit, rather than my teeth.

I used to have a front facing job dealing with the public. I always kept mints handy to ensure my breath was ok. Since my son mentioned my breath that time I started keeping either mints or chewing gum in my pocket or bag again, just to be on the safe side.

Heavy perfumes give me a headache now so i tend to stick with lighter unisex fragrances such as CK1 which don't seem to have the same staying power as my old Chanel No 5 or Mitsouko, both of which I used to love but which I can no longer wear. Shame.

The special Japanese soap which was mentioned contains Persimmon. I got some from Amazon

Yes but what’s it like?

Loobyloo12 Wed 06-Sept-23 14:16:36

I worry a bit about these things too. The special Japanese soap which was mentioned contains Persimmon. I got some from Amazon. I never wear clothes from my wardrobe as they can smell musty. I put essential oils in my wardrobe. Citrus ones. Only wear freshly washed clothes using Persil non bio liquid. Nice scent. It may not be you! Ot could be that he is airing the room!
